In a highly unusual move for a broadcast series, ABC and the producers of “Lost” are in discussions to determine an end date for the show.

The date will set a limit to the number of “Lost” seasons to come and will be announced to fans. The show’s producers, speaking at ABC’s Television Critics Association press tour session, said having a conclusion date will bolster fan confidence in the series’ narrative. A timeline for making the decision was not announced.

Lost Shocker: The End is Near!

In what is sure to go down in television history as its most shocking twist, Lost is about to go somewhere that no still-hypersuccessful show ever has: away.

The time-tripping serial's producers announced at press tour today that they are in talks with ABC about establishing not a season but a series finale date — as they describe it, an "end game" — to ensure that their baby goes out on top. "From the word go, it always felt to me that [if we ran] somewhere in the neighborhood of between 90 and 100 episodes... we never [would have] to do a bad season," says cocreator Damon Lindelof. "We knew Season 1 was going to be the introduction, Season 2 was going to be into the hatch, Season 3 was going to be the Others...

"I don't want to tell you what Season 4 is gonna be," he continues. "And then there was a shortened wrap-up season that would put you somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 episodes. At the end of season 4, we will have produced 93 hours of the show, and I imagine that would be very close to where it would end ideally."

Ideally from a creative standpoint perhaps. But from a financial perspective, ABC had to have hit the roof over Lindelof and Co.'s decision. Well, maybe not had to. In fact, if anything is more surprising than the execs' desire to bring Lost to a close while it's still vital, it has to be the network's reaction. "As opposed to them saying, 'Fine we'll bring on new [producers],' they said, 'Well, when do you think it should end?'" Lindelof reveals. "Obviously, they want the show to go on as long as possible. But all that we can say is, 'There's a show with us running it and there's a show without us running it, and if you want the show with us running it, this is when we think it should end.' And like any negotiation, therein lies the rub.

"But," he adds, "I think [ABC president] Steve [McPherson] has begun to embrace the idea that the show needs to end, and now the question becomes when. I would anticipate that announcement would come sooner rather than later, because you don't want to make it in a way that seems like it's reactionary." In other words, he says he doesn't want Lost to come off like "The O.C. saying, 'We're going to end [the show!' No, you got cancelled."

If he and his colleagues hadn't taken action, Lindelof can well imagine what the long-long-term future of Lost would have resembled. "They could produce a sixth or seventh or eighth season, but would anybody be watching?" he asks, though he clearly has an answer in mind. "The show would be so miserable by that time. Was it really The X-Files anymore when David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson weren't on the show? For me, The X-Files wasn't about 'Have aliens invaded?' it was about Mulder and Scully, a skeptic and a believer. And once that element of the show was gone, the show was over. So we don't want to produce those episodes of Lost. And we're not going to produce those episodes of Lost."

Lindelof believes such a gutsy move will only boost the show's popularity. "I think it will bring a lot of the audience who left back. To say like, 'I was wrong. They are going to give me [answers]. Whether I like it or not is yet to be determined.' But I think the questions the audience is asking is not, 'Will the answers they give us be satisfying?' It's, 'Will they give us the answers at all.' And that's a very good question to be asking." — Additional reporting by Ben Katner

So, how do you feel about this revolutionary idea of Lost going away before it's a shell of its former self? Start the discussion below! Also, be sure to check out Ask Ausiello on Wednesday for some exclusive (and pretty darn spoilery) Lost prattle.

Hmm you know I'm not upset over this. Frankly, as a huge X-Files fan I can agree that it should've died long before it actually did, and I dread Lost would become the same. 4-5 season for a show about an island is ideal I suppose.

I think Damon's living in the clouds though if he thinks it will bring people back. Especially when there's so much more to get hooked on this season.

Yeah, we don't want that. I'm glad they're announcing the end, the biggest mistake would be making the show run for longer than it should and ruin everything.

7 ways to fix Lost before it ends : Watercooler : TV : Entertainment : Sympatico / MSN

They're totally Lost, but I can help
By Greg David

To stop Lost from sucking so bad, Greg David has some suggestions for the producers

The news out of Los Angeles that Lost will only be around for two more seasons - or less - was a relief.

I'm a huge fan, but I'm sick of seeing the producers running it into the ground.

When Lost debuted, the mythology, the rogue group of people named the Others, and finding out just who the survivors of Flight 815 were made the drama intriguing.

But now, in Season 3, Lost has become a shadow of its former self. Mired in too many plotlines, too many red herrings, and a bunch of characters I couldn't care less about, Lost has ... lost its way.

But there's still time for co-producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse to pull this one out of the fire and make it great again. Here's how:

- Bring back the monster, but make it different. Not the lame one made out of smoke - that's not scary - make it a T. Rex or a velociraptor, something we can see, something that can run, scratch and tear. Something like... the polar bear. That reminds me...

- Bring back the polar bear. The sheer "what the hell?" drama of having a hungry polar bear on a tropical island made for great, suspenseful TV. The bear should maul one of the main characters every week, so not only do the survivors have to find a way off the island, but they have the added pressure of becoming polar bear spoor if they don't.

- Get rid of the extras. Sorry, but introducing guys named Bruce or Barry, guys we've NEVER SEEN BEFORE doesn't work for me. It smacks of the classic Star Trek, where you knew that the secruity dude in the red shirt was gonna die, rather than Kirk or Spock. Don't insult me by adding peripheral characters that don't add to the plot.

- Get rid of the Tailies. Eko was the only one of the Tailies that remotely mattered to me, and now he's gone. Never mention them again. Please.

- Focus on one island, not two. Having two islands is too confusing, and adds yet another twist to the Lost mythology. It's easier to picture everyone on one island, confined there and having to get along.

- Kill Claire. My apologies, but if I hear her yell "My baby, my baby," one more time, I will pull my hair out. Claire brings nothing to the story now that she's given birth. Time to sacrifice her to the polar bear, maybe during sweeps.

- Finally, settle the Jack-Sawyer-Kate love triangle once and for all. Four words: Sawyer cuddling Jack = ratings.

That definetly is Claire's catchphrase, isn't it?

Hee! I agree with several things on that list. I like Claire, but that bit about her was hilarious.

I agree with the majority of what they listed. I love Emilie and think she's incredibly talented, but ever since Aaron's birth Claire has been wallpaper.
