I guess he really needed or wanted this other dude dead and tricked him.
Hibbs (Robert Patrick) wanted Sawyer to kill the Sweet Shrimp owner because he owed him money and hadn't paid him back.

As for Jack's father in the bar with Sawyer, well here's most of that conversation.

Christian Shepard has a theory: Some people are just meant to suffer -- and he should know, he's a chief of surgery. "That's why the Red Sox will never win the series, Christian says." When Sawyer asks him why he doesn't call his son and tell him these things, Christian gives a more honest answer than we've ever heard from him: "Because I am weak." And when he asks if the "business" Sawyer is in town for is going to bring him peace, Sawyer tells him it will. "Then what are you doing here?"

So he never really tells him to go shoot the guy. Just wanted to mention that.

Did anyone notice that before Charlie walked up to Claire on the beach, she was looking at Michael, and at his son, and then at her stomach? She must have been thinking about being a mother and having a kid of her own. I thought that was kind of neat.

PPD, oh I know that Jack's father didn't out and out tell Sawyer to go kill someone, but obviously he knew how torn Sawyer was on his business and I think he knew it wasn't exactly kosher, but if it would bring Sawyer peace, he encouraged him to do it all the same.

I have just seen the episode and I must say I loved it. It was a lot more interesting than the last one.
And it was nice to see that Sawyer met Jack´s dad in the past. I loved the look in his eyes when Jack said that the red socks bla bla...Sawyer´s face was priceless when the realization hit him

Any ideas as to what could have happened to Claire or what he did to her to make her have amnesia?

I was reading about different types of amnesia. Claire's makes no sense. I really hate that she has amnesia. That kind of thing should be reserved for unrealistic soap operas, and really good anime, like Noir.

Actually, the idea of amnesia fits right into the tone of the show. You never ever get the full answer to anything. It's not like in a soap opera when amnesia is used as a plot device t break up a beloved couple. Claire was honestly traumatized but her forgetting hasn't messed up her relationship with people on the island. It's only kept Jack, etc. from knowing about the other people on the show.

I understand Charlie's memory loss, and I have no problem with that. I think it's realistic and even fascinating. Claire's amnesia, on the other hand, just seems kind of rare and over-the-top.

It can happen (and can be done right on TV and all that), but hearing the word just makes me and many other people think of soap operas. I was surprised they went that route on the show for this very reason.

That's what I thought until... well, this is actually going to be hard to explain. I live fairly close to Boston. So right as this whole "Claire has amnesia" thing started to develop, the search for an amnesiac's identity began in the state. The man had been through a traumatic experience, and after being thrown from a pickup truck, he woke up in a snow bank outside of Boston with no recollection of his past- he couldn't remember his name or where he was from, or what happened to him.

The story was broadcast all over the country, and a brother from North Carolina called the cops. It turns it the amnesiac's name is Omar Hamani Beidari, and he had moved to North Carolina after a career as a professional basketball player in the West African country of Niger.

This case made me wonder more about amnesia, so I tried researching it. We can be pretty certain Claire is suffering from retrograde amnesia. From a medical site: "These people do not lose all their memories. Usually, the memory loss is worst for events just before the injury; events from long ago are more likely to be safe."

Retrograde amnesia can be caused by trauma or a brain injury.
