The mystery of the french message

Hi guys ! I've juste watch the pilot (1 & 2) and I looove this show. I'm totally hooked ! I can't wait for next week episode!

To kill the time, i try to understand the mystery of the french message.

1°) The lady is french (not canadian or belgium or whatever) : she's got a perfect french accent.

2°) The young girl (Ian Somerhalder's sister : i can't remeber her name ) doesn't translate all and, sometimes, she mistranslate : do you think her french really sùcks or that she do it on purpose ?

So, here are the sentences of the french lady :

Si qui que ce soit puisse entendre ceci... ils sont morts. Ils sont tous morts...
If anybody could hear that... they are dead... They are all dead.

Il est dehors....
It/he's outside. The problem is that the french doesn't know, in their langage the "it" : they are only "he" and "she" : even things are male or female. So, when she says in french "il" it could be a person (a male) or anything (like an animal, a monster...)

Il est dehors et Brenan a pris les clefs...
It/He's outside and Brenan (must be a person) took the keys.

Keys ? yeah ! So, there is a lock somewhere : Maybe that means there is a house, or something like that !!!

Ils sont morts. Il les a tué. Ils les a tous tués.
They are dead. It/He killed them. It/He killed them all.

Je vais essayer d'aller jusqu'au rocher noir...
I'm going to try to go to the black rock.
That's the sentence that the girl doesn't translate. The french lady said it twice.

And when the french lady said If anybody can hear that.. , the girl translated : "I'm alone now".

So, the 2 most important and mysterious sentences ("It/He's outside and Brenan took the keys" / and "I'm going to try to go to the black rock...." weren't translated.

So, guys, what do you think of all those words ??

Thank you so much Andalusia for translating that.

And interesting!

->Brenan
->Keys
->Black Rock

I hope they're clues... for what's to come. But at least we can speculate.

The french message disturbed me when I saw the episode.

Anyway I think Shannon didn't mistranslate on purpose. Her brother said she had spent one year in Paris studying, you can't speak fluently after one year (or she's a genius). And she said she wasn't studying but drinking there.

That's what disturbed me the most but now that I think about it, she was just probably translating the sentence they had heard before. She may not have had a lot of practice with french lately and it took her some time to remember.

Everything is still so mysterious, I can't wait to learn more about the island and the french voice.

Nope. Impossible. The french lady never said "Im alone now" (it would have been Je suis seule maintenant : so, the girl (Ian's Brother) misunderstood or invented, devised those words. I'm sure about that.
Cause the message is repeated and I carefully listen to it. No "I'm alone, now".
I really wonder why she didn't tranlasted the 2 sentences with clues ?
Arrgh ! I love that show !!!! I love mysteries !!!!

Or why the writers, directors purposely left the correct translation out... maybe they knew the fans would translate it correctly and so it would be like a scavanger hunt... which would be weird yet interesting. Or it will be revealed later on in the show.

Hi Andalusia! are you French, like me and HornyCookie? No? In that case, your translation is great!

I think Shannon (Boone's sister) says what she UNDERSTAND, and don't translate all the words: for her, if "it/he killed them all", that means the French woman is alone now...

In the original pilot there was only 4 phrases repeated:

"je vais essayer d'aller jusqu'au rocher noir... Si qui que ce soit puisse entendre ceci... venez nous aider... il les a tués, il les a tués tous..."

In the new pilot, many important things have been added : "il est dehors..." "Brenan a pris les clés..." (but why are the phrases repeated in no particular order after the iteration ???).

I have a question: the woman says "venez NOUS aider". Why "US" if she is alone?

PS for the French speakers here: I think the message is in bad French (like my own messages in English ) "si qui que ce soit puisse.." is incorrect, and I hear "veuillez nous aider", not "venez"... (If true, that's a very ceremonious langage for a scared woman!)

"venez NOUS aider". : Arrgh : I forgot that one ! Great analysis ! We know that she's not alone (despite what Ian's sister said) : because, if Brenan took the keys, that means he's alive too... they are, at least, two !

For "si qui que ce soit puisse.." I agree : not correct (she should have used the present not the subjunctive) : "si qui que ce soit peut entendre ceci".

But i disagree for the second one, Cat. "veuillez nous aider", & "venez nous aider" are both correct.
- the first one is "please help us" (veuillez is from vouloir in a polite way : veuillez agréer mes salutations bla bla)
- the second one is "come to help us" (venez is from venir : venez nous donner un coup de main, venez ici : it's more like an order, it's less polite, more desperate).

Yes, except... maybe "Brenan" IS the one who killed the others!

I didn't say that "veuillez" is not correct, it is, but WAY TOO ceremonious, too polite for a woman in a hurry, frightened, etc.

In fact, it seems to me and to another French friends that the writers have simply translated their phrases from English!

By the way, I wonder if it is Evangeline who has performed the French voice? She speaks "fluent French", according the ABC site, and the woman is supposed young (16 years ago...)

It could be, yes But why the french lady says "IL" for the killer and than Brenan... I thought that Brenan is coward who ran away...

One of my ideas is that the "IL" hides something : that's the reason I made the IT/HE explaination...

Hhmmm Speculations, speculation... I am speculation girl I love having "lost fantasies"

Oh. I have a question (for mooooore speculations ) : do you think that the french lady and Brenan are dead ? Will the "lost crew" will find them or will they find bodies ? (well, after 16 years, it migth be skeletons... )

I think that's good they are many survivors form the crash : that means that the story writters could kill some of them and frigthen us . Yeah... I know... I'm evil

You have to explain me that ! Who is Evangeline ???
I've just discover Lost this week and I know nothing about the writters (except that there's a Buffy writter), the scenarist, the actors... Can you enlighten me please ???

I agree... For once, thanks to the French language! "Il" is more mysterious than "it" or "he"! therefore more room for speculation from the speculation girls

I can't answer that because I'm too "spoilered" right now! (I read news, spoilers and speculation for Lost since March 04!)

She is Evangeline Lilly, the Canadian actress who plays Kate in Lost. The writers of the pilot are JJ Abrams (creator of Alias, and co-creator of Lost) and Damon Lindelof. David Fury (Buffy's writer) wrote two upcoming episodes.

You can find all the information about Lost and some good ideas in the posts here at FanForum (you MUST read all the posts, BTW, they are interesting and fun!), at lost-tv.com and at televisionwithoutpity.com.

I have read so many theories right now, my head is spinning! Most of them come from books (Lord of the Flies, The Stand, Sphere...) and movies (Forbidden Planet, The Truman Show...).

Thanks for all the info & the links,Cat (i've just noticed that your signature has 2 french links). But i prefer to avoid all those site cause I don't wanna be spoiled. I just drop one eye on one of your french site and BAM I got spoiled
I was a spoiler b!tch with Buffy and I "spoiled" myself : it ruined a lot of thing. I don't want that to happen a second time.

I sometimes go to some spoilers board (like CSI or JOA) but I love Lost too much to discover the mysteries before thay are aired. I want the info and the picture in the same time.
It's a new experience for me and I like it

Personally I found the use of the world 'Il' in reference to the whatever killed them all very strange. It it is something you're afraid of and can't identify exactly what it is, you might have a tendency to say 'c'est dehors'.

Awesome translation. Thanks so much for that!

The French message and the 16 year ago intrigue is so great... this show is definitely stepping it up. Can't wait to find out what's really going on.
