After a tragic loss of her parents, Nikki and her siblings move to Playa Linda where her aunt Ava, signed her up for summer day camp.
At Camp Playa Linda she met a boy named Cameron. They instantly bonded over their love of literature. Cameron asked Nikki if she was interested in going to the Founder’s Day celebration, it takes her a while but she finally realizes that he’s asking her out, so she says yes. Plans change and Cameron invites her to his place to watch the fireworks. That night they shared a blanket under the night sky as they watched the fireworks and as Cameron was leaning in for a kiss, noises from inside the house interrupts them and Nikki runs away after seeing that the interruption came from Cameron’s dad and her aunt Ava. The next day Nikki sneaks out to Cameron’s house. She apologizes for running away the night before and he eases her worry by joking about the both of them being freaked out, and will probably both need years of therapy. She smiles and is about to leave but Cameron stops her, and they kiss. It was the first of many kisses to come from these two.

Ever since their first kiss Cameron was like a part of the family helping Nikki paint her room, to helping Derrick with baseball, and to wanting to spend time with everyone. When Amber an old flame, comes back into the picture, he still only has eyes for her. Cameron and Amber gets a summer job at the same place, so Nikki questions their relationship and ends up pushing him away, but in turn establish a friendship with Amber. Time goes by and they encounter one another and clear up the air and end up being friends, for the rest of the summer they spend time with each other 24/7. By the end of the summer Nikki finds out that Cameron has been seeing another girl. Seeing them together, she never realizes that they were really over. Advice given by Johnny, she realizes that if she wants him in her life she has to be okay with whoever he is dating.

Throughout the school year they remain friends doing things such as running for class president and working on the school’s literary magazine together. It wasn’t until a high school boy catches Nikki’s attention that Cameron realizes that he still has feelings for Nikki. In the end Nikki assures Cameron that she would pick him over a high school guy any day of the week and sealed it with a kiss. During the summer that Nikki was away in Kansas, Cameron has been dealing with an abusive father (Kyle). When Nikki comes back, Cameron’s behavior has been standoffish and she thinks that he is losing interest in her. With Nikki’s persistence Cameron confesses that his father has a drinking problem and showed her a large bruise on his shoulder and he made her promise not to tell anyone. After one date Nikki realizes that things are getting worse for Cameron and admits to Ava that his father is hurting him. Ava confronts Kyle and later that night a distressed Cameron calls Nikki. She meets him down by the beach where he let out all his frustration, pulling him into a hug and promising never to let go. With Nikki and the rest of the families help they take him in makes Kyle see that the things he’s doing hurting his son.

Through the ups and downs that these two endured they always come back to the same place in each other’s lives as friends or lovers but this case they ended with lovers with a strong friendship as their foundation.
