Nathan looked up to Whitey and Whitey had taught him well. He learned that as much as he loved the game, that wasn't the be all and end all of life. Basketball didn't define him, it was merely a part of him.

Also, I love how he was so proud of Nathan for become a better guy than his own father even I think that sometime he prob worry if he would end up to be like him, but he didn't..

For a while there it did seem like Nathan was following in his father's footsteps but Whitey knew deep down he was nothing like Dan. He just needed to get out from under Dan's influence. Meeting Haley helped accomplish this and he found his own path. Whitey couldn't have been more thankful or proud.

Yup, that's right.. I think that in no matter what, he still going to be different person as long he need someone who don't know about him or his history w/ his family that because of Haley even Whitey grateful for Haley since he knows how much Nathan doesn't want to be around his family..

Whitey never judged Nathan. Having to live up to everyone's expectations placed so much pressure on Nathan so he appreciated having two people in his life who didn't judge him and truly cared about him. This is what was missing in his life and found it with Whitey and Haley and then Luke.
