James/Nathan Episode Discussion: 7.20 -"Learning to Fall"
Learning to Fall CLAY IS CONFRONTED BY AN UNSTABLE KATIE - Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) struggle with the aftermath of her mother's death, while Brooke (Sophia Bush) deals with the fallout of Alexander's (guest star Mitch Ryan) tryst with Victoria (guest star Daphne Zuniga). Alex (Jana Kramer) discovers a secret about her leading man, Josh (guest star Paul Teal), that could derail Julian's (Austin Nichols) film, and Clay (Robert Buckley) is confronted by an unhinged Katie (guest star Amanda Schull). Shantel VanSanten also stars. |

Once again a total Nathanless eppy If they aren't going to have Nathan get his own sl, then they could atleast give NH the proper screentime for Haley's depression sl. MYGOD!! This show is seriously becoming annoying. All these boring second hand characters getting more screentime then the core three is BULLS***!!!!!!
Also if I hear one more time about how Nathan should really be there for Haley and not get angry at her, and bascially fix her..... I AM GOING TO SCREAM!! Nathan is an amazing husband and he IS completely there for Haley. He will continue to do absolutely everything in his power to help Haley, but Haley also has to want the help and she is just not at that stage yet!! I really wouldn't be opposed with Nathan shaking her and telling her exactly what she has in this world and just how loved she is, it might open Haley's eyes!! It's heartbreaking to watch Haley go through this, but this type of depression doesn't just affect her, it is affecting Nathan and Jamie aswell, and hearing people say 'Oh Nathan really has to step up and help her' is really sad because we all know that that is exactly what he is going to do. And most fans that are saying this are Naley fans, I just do not understand that at all!! Ok, rant over. Sorry but reading some fans reviews have gotten me so completely baffled. __________________

For me, Nathan being there for Haley has never come into question. That's how it's always been and that's how it always will be. He's always put his family first as that's who Nathan is. He doesn't have to do anything to prove it. Time and time again he's shown that there's absolutely nothing he wouldn't do for them and that he's there for them no matter what. That's one of the things I love/admire most about him.
I'm glad he finally got to see first hand the severity of Haley's depression as up until now she was making out that she was recovering well. Nathan knew that she was still sad but she wouldn't let him see what was really going on. She has shut herself off and is withdrawn and distant. The depression has consumed her. He can't help her if she doesn't let him see/know what's going on. Nathan looked stunned, devasated and confused at the end and during the scene in the kitchen. Now that he's seen just how badly she is coping he's going to take charge of the situation. He's not going to give up on her. And I agree Nikki, that it's not all up to Nathan. Haley has to want the help also. It's like she knows how badly she is coping but at the same time she doesn't know how to help herself if that makes sense. It's like the depression has taken over. She's bottling everything in and she needs to let it out.Seeing her tonight crushed me. She reached breaking point tonight. And seeing how it affected Nathan and Jamie crushed me too. I just hope she can get through this soon. Quote:

This has already gone way OTT. When you don't get yelled at for almost burning the house down, there's being supportive and there's being ridiculous. |

So little Nathan in the episode again. UGH. This is beyond frustrating. I hate it. One thing that is making it up for it, is that he is involved in Haley's SL, and we're not seeing him in another world of his own, but there for his wife, even when she is distancing herself.
James was amazing with all the body language and facial expressions when Nathan was observing Haley's behaviour. I'm glad Nathan was understandable of Haley's state, not surprising though, and gave her the space that she wanted when she needed it, but also was observing her, and I think with the fire accident, he will interfere by any means, at least I hope this is how they handle it for the upcoming episodes. I loved Nathan singing Flying Machine though. So cute! I understand your frustration, guys, on what's being said on Nathan, and wanting him tom ~step up~ or ~take some action~, but let's not bring over here what's being discussed in other boards. |

I totally agree. I really hope Nathan keeps a closer eye on her and I hope he talks to her about it much more. Joy was amazing and I hate seeing Haley like that though. I wish Nathan would have a better storyline other than just helping her out.. he deserves more screentime :/ |

Nathan listening and singing to Flying Machine was too cute for words He has so much love and admiration for his wife. I was expecting more NH scenes seeing as it's such an intense storyline so I was disappointed that we didn't but I was more than happy with the scenes that we did get. I loved them. __________________

Is that because of the lack of screentime/storyline for Nathan Sar?

I've rewatched this episode, and I really don't know whether to laugh, or stop watching because of the stupidity of it all and the way Nathan is still being treated like an emasculated extra.
Only two characters have ever behaved this insane after losing someone, and their names were Psycho Derek and Nanny Carrie. Only two regular characters have ever turned into a complete lunatic for one reason or another, and their names are Dan and Deb - two characters who are now widely deemed a complete joke and are no longer fully trusted with anything, precisely because they belong in a padded cell. Now we add Haley to the list. Wailing, snapping at people, speeding, drinking (possibly while pregnant), and nearly burning the house down. I know they say men marry their mothers, but the real irony here is that for all the talk of Nathan avoiding being like Dan, we now have Haley behaving like Deb - complete with deliberately setting a building on fire while her husband is still in it. With the exception of Lucas and Jamie, Nathan's entire family is now either insane, or Quinn. If I were him I'd go live in a cave. |

Nathan is the only character worth watching and even though the writers have seriously dehabilitated his character the last two and half seasons, he is the only reason I continue watching. If we get a season 8, I am begging the writers to give Nathan a sl of his OWN!! __________________

Deb and Haley are two completely DIFFERENT cases, J. You're talking about one who spent hell of a time drinking, popping pills, running around with a gun, setting her husband on fire, running away from home, cheating and abondoning her son, to someone who is depressed after losing her mother, and I'm sure it's a culmination of many things before. In my opinion, there is no comparison. Nathan was a similar case to Haley, he was depressed, drunk and was reluctant to try and walk when he possibily could. Haley is depressed, she drinks, distant, and indeed set the piano on fire, but not to kill someone.
Sure you know that people who suffer from depression are not stable, they have trouble focusing, remembering things, or making decisions, and if they did, they are irrational or impulsive , they might feel that life is not worth living, these are some of the things that Haley is suffering from, from what we've seen, that doesn't make her a wacky person at all. |

I don't think it is so different, Sally.
Simple depression was Nathan wallowing on the couch because he had no self-esteem and no motivation. Simple depression was Lucas crying in his bedroom after Keith died, or Karen locking herself away for a while. That's not what Haley's doing. I really think this has been taken too far, well past simply being depressed because her mom died and into the realm of her being completely crazy. There's no difference between Deb being so crazed and indifferent that she would shoot up the cafe and not be concerned about how dangerous it was, and Haley being so crazed and indifferent that she would deliberately set the house on fire and passively watch it burn with no concern for herself or the other people in it. That's not simple depression, that's doing things that are borderline psychotic. It's the way the writers have written it and it's the way Joy has acted it. In real life she'd probably be sent to a psych ward because her behaviour is putting lives at risk. |

I have to agree with Sally.
I really do not think it is THAT abnormal for Haley to be acting that way after the death of her mother. I sure as hell would be upset. I definitley think that Dan and Deb were much much worse. She isn't close to as crazy as those two are. |
