I think it was the writers' choice and I think he probably learned it growing up on the streets in NY

actually read a fic where he learned how to play cards from his mom and one of his mom's better boyfriends

but oh man I love his disappearing coin trick too

it does fit his personality though

I still think it's funny when Milo went on Gilmore Guys and they asked him about the close-up magic he said "I had to learn that **it!"

I know they did ask him that! It make it even more funny that he had to learn that for the show but yet then never explained or gave a back story on it. I will say that is one of the things I like about This Is Us is they do give the back stories on the little things, but GG was not that type of show.

Like why did Rory and Jess like reading? Normally it comes from somewhere? Did they not grow up with a TV so they had to read? Liz and Lorelai didn't look like the type to read to a lot but I mean it was different for people of that age.

Idk I kinda like having some things not fully explained/left to your own interpretation

I see reading for Jess as a coping mechanism/way to escape reality especially with a hard childhood growing up and for Rory I'm not as sure but I don't see Lorelai as not being knowledgeable when it comes to books with her growing up in an upper-class family (clearly not as much as Rory) but we see that she is well-versed in all things pop culture

and besides Jess reading to escape we see that he does have a genuine love for literature/the written word

yes Alex being a close-up magician was a big part of his character/charm in S2
