Depp in a tight Squeeze

Johnny Depp guests on Glenn Tilbrook & The Fluffers' new album Pandemonium Ensues, out on February 16. Depp, who plays guitar on Too Close To The Sun, is a Squeeze fan, and his wife Vanessa Paradis sings on Interest And Love. Produced by Tilbrook, it's his first LP since 2004's Transatlantic Ping Pong.

Rough Trade Shops release their annual Counter Culture compilation on February 2. It has 44 tracks by Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Yo Majesty and Atlas Sound.

Johnny Depp's drink confession

Johnny Depp "poisoned himself" with alcohol to cope with fame. The usually tight-lipped actor has revealed he partied so hard in the 90s to try and deal with his meteoric ascent to superstardom.

Depp - who was engaged to hard-partying model Kate Moss and was friends with wild Oasis rockers Liam and Noel Gallagher during the decade - is quoted as saying: "I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. I felt I could only be myself when I was alone, that I turned into some kind of novelty.

The only way I could get through that time was to drink. "I poisoned myself with alcohol for years but I've never been into drugs in the way it was sometimes made out." Despite a string of critically-acclaimed film performances and three Academy Award nominations, Depp admits he is still insecure about his acting abilities.

He said: "I don't think of myself as being a celebrity, it's too mortifying. I have a hard time watching myself on screen and it's getting worse. I can't tell whether my work is good or not."

But one thing constantly getting better in his life is his relationship with French star Vanessa Paradis - the mother of his two children Lily-Rose and Jack. Depp, 45, added: "Meeting Vanessa gave me proper perspective and understanding. It wasn't until then that things started to get real for me."

It just proves that celebrities have insecurities like everyone else, and even though he's had Oscar nominations and has won other numerous awards, it's so hard to believe he doesn't believe in his own talent.

awe poor Johnny. he used to be so uncomfortable in his own skin. that's unfortunate in some ways because he doesn't seem to have the confidence to see that he is an amazing actor and that his roles and characters are unbelievable. but i guess it has it's plus sides too because at least he's not arrogant at all about it. i mean, he's so great and he doesn't even see it, which makes him want to work so much harder. and as a side note, he's completely gorgeous as well, which he doesn't agree with, but i think that makes him all the more appealing. i can't stand people who are full of themselves, especially actors and to see someone and talented, gorgeous, and clueless as Johnny, definitely makes him number one in my book.

You could say being an outlaw runs in Johnny Depp's blood. After all, his grandfather ran moonshine on the back roads of Kentucky during Prohibition. So it shouldn't come as any surprise that the actor jumped at the chance to play John Dillinger in Public Enemies. ''Dillinger was one of those guys, like Charlie Chaplin and Evel Knievel, that I was fascinated with at a young age,'' says Depp. ''And because of my grandfather, the character was pretty easy for me to connect to. In a way, this movie was a salute to him.''

Based on a book by Bryan Burrough, Enemies is a cat-and-mouse thriller about the early days of the FBI, and one agent's pursuit of the Depression-era bank robber whose dizzy reign of stickups and near escapes ended in a hail of bullets outside of Chicago's Biograph Theater in 1934. Dillinger lived fast, died young, and left not only a handsome corpse but a legacy as one of the most notorious criminals of the 20th century.
