Yeah, you're right Ari. It's underrated and he still looks kinda good with this illness.

This is one of Johnny's best, it's and out there role with implications off the moon, but it was a great story.

This film is simply beautiful ... Love it.

I'm really passionate about theatre, so I loved that it felt as if I was sitting in one, watching a play. And I was sad when the film came to its end, that never happens to me with movies, only with theatreplays.

Johnny Depp's performance was excellent and really touching.

I also love this role, because it's not a huge blockbuster movie, it has a point a story and it's not about just raking in money.

That's what I love about Johnny. He mostly picks roles like this. Roles which are unusual, interesting, a challenge for him and definately not just about getting a lot of money and success

So true. I think in recent years that the only movies that have had the huge success have been POTC, but that doesn't mean his other films, like this one are any less worthy of the attention.

There are times when I wish he got more recognition for these more independent, non-blockbuster films.

This was on TV last week, caught the last 10 minutes, but now I want to watch it all over again!

I love that he takes risks with his roles!

I couldn't agree more Melika. I can certainly enjoy POTC, like everybody else, but it's movies like The Libertine that really show the depth of Johnny's talent. The first time I saw it, I really couldn't feel it, but I often try to watch movies twice, since I can miss stuff and be distracted the first time around. And man, was I ever grateful I did, because the second time I watched it, it had me spellbound and I just fell in love with it and now it's one of my favorite JD films.

It never ceases to amaze me how he manages to find great independent films and small roles that allow him to grow as an actor and use his talent so brilliantly. I hope he continues to do it for a long time to come and I wish those roles would get more of the credit that they deserve.

Well said Harley!

When I first heard about The Libertine, I was worried about the role because of the bi-sexual nature it encompassed, but Johnny's talent has no boundaries and he made this movie exceptional!

I've always thought it was a great shame they decided to cut the gay kiss from the film, since bisexuality was an important aspect to Rochester (like the whole prologue implied). I can imagine why, but it's sad they felt they had to, especially when the film had far, far more supposedly-risque stuff in it than a same-sex kiss.

Anyway! I just recently watched this and found it a very interesting watch. I'm not sure enjoyed is the right word for such a relentlessly desolate film, but there were aspects I liked a lot.

Namely, the performances were all fantastic. Of course, Johnny Depp was brilliant, but I was blown away by just how brilliant. He takes this generally dislikable man and makes me feel such empathy for him, even though he effectively digs his own grave and can't really blame anyone but himself. This might not be my favourite film, or even my favourite Johnny Depp film, but it's certainly one of my favourite performances by him. I don't even think I can do it justice with praise, he was just brilliant and subtle, with little expressions and movements and the ways he said his lines.

And I have to give a special nod to the chair scene, because it's the first time that I've really seen him sobbing in a film, and it broke my heart! I think basically by that point in the film I was blinking back tears myself, and by the time the ending narration came on.... *sobs*.... I loved the ending, how he repeated "Do you like me now?" and subtly changed how he said it each time so it went from cocky to... I can't think of the word, but sort of like he really asking for assurance that his life meant something. I think.

Erm..... aaand I'll end this essay-size post now, heh!

Great comments Mitsuki!

I never knew that the 'gay kiss' was removed, but maybe producers/direction felt that people would watch just to see Johnny kiss a guy. (Brokeback Mountain got a lot of people who watched just to see the 'action' you know.)

This is a movie I'd like to watch again, just because the performance, like you mentioned Mitsuki, makes you feel for the character, even though he's somewhat the antagonist you know.

The sobbing was impeccable! It really was the first time I can recall Johnny crying in a role. (I know there's Cry-Baby, but that doesn't count! )
