What (some of the) critics said about Adam Brody
‘Ultimately, though, "In the Land of Women" belongs to its single male lead, Carter, played with an astonishing emotional truth by Adam Brody (better known for his TV work in "O.C."), who holds the entire picture on his slender frame. Brody is not a looker, to put it bluntly, but he's an appealingly compelling actor, endowed with a resonant voice. Brody is center-stage most of the time, and it's easy to believe why an aggregate of women, three generations apart, would trust him as a confidant and seek his company.’ – Emanuellevy.com

‘The lanky and likable Brody, "The O.C."'s young heartthrob gives a charming, no-sweat performance that never requires us to take Carter's crisis too seriously.’ – Newsweek Entertainment

‘The film belongs, however, to Brody, who was recently sprung from the TV series "The O.C." Smooth and affable, Brody has Carter bubble with the cocksure audacity of a successful man in his mid-20s, but the confident edifice is only a brittle shell for the tender, lost child hiding beneath. It would be easy to despise a guy who flirts with a married family woman and her precocious teeny-bopper daughter, but Brody easily makes Carter likable.’ - Scripps News

‘Adam Brody was very natural in the leading role, not making an overwhelmingly drastic departure from his television character, “Seth Cohen,” on the ended series, “The O.C.” His attractive confidence and believable moments of emotional clarity made him likable in the film.’ – SheUnlimited.com

‘The film's other calculation is to position Carter as a man whom women instinctively like, someone who considers himself a good listener and is able to make both women feel important by doing just that. Brody, who had a splendid cameo as a Hollywood assistant in "Thank You for Smoking," has just the right kind of sensitive heartthrob quality to make it all convincing.’ – calendarlive.com

‘But the film belongs to Brody, an endearing screen presence.’ – USA Today

‘Brody's Carter Webb carries numerous echoes of Seth Cohen, showing, most notably, a love of the sardonic, with a tendency toward smart-aleckiness. But Brody also knows how to temper his potentially obnoxious qualities with shades of insecurity and uncertainty, and the equation works. Brody, with his pipe-cleaner limbs, still has some adolescent gawkiness in him, even though he's in his 20s -- it's simply a part of who he is, and he neither exaggerates it nor downplays it. He has a lovely scene in which he listens to Lucy complaining about her mom, even though he also knows, and is sympathetic to, Sarah's side of the story. The two are lounging around outdoors on a warm evening. Carter smokes a cigarette as he listens to Lucy pouring out her teenage tale of woe. The look on his face is one of deep empathy tempered with hard-earned, grown-up common sense; even though he has to allow this young woman her confusion, he also wants to help her grow beyond it. The scene is the kind of small moment that shows what actors are made of. "The O.C." may be over, but Adam Brody isn't.’ – Salon.com

‘But it's on Brody's shoulders that Jon Kasdan places his movie, and the actor carries it with strength and self-deprecating wit. In "In the Land of Women," Brody is the man.’ – Salt Lake Tribune

‘Hopefully Brody can escape the TV actor stigma because he definitely has charisma and good timing and appears to have both leading man capabilities and supporting actor tendencies.’ – 411media.com

‘What’s there for the men, you ask? Adam Brody. Okay… everybody is going to like and appreciate Carter Webb. He is an everyman who contains relational elements of men and women, who learn to observe, listen, and begin to understand why he loves women so much and why they are so important in his life. Conversely, the women touched by Carter gain a deeper understanding of themselves by coming to experience and understand him. Adam Brody is brilliant in this role.’ – Pass The Popcorn

‘Brody, Ryan and Dukakis needn't outdo themselves in their parts, but they keep us emotionally engaged.’ – The Toronto Star

‘But In the Land of Women still manages to be entertaining, largely because of the appealing Adam Brody (The OC) as Carter Webb, an L.A. screenwriter of softcore porn, who, upon being dumped by his actress/model girlfriend, decides to move temporarily to Michigan to take care of his increasingly senile grandmother (Olympia Dukakis).’ – Miami Herald

‘But the film belongs to Brody, irritating and endearing and relatable in ways that actors rarely are. In In the Land of Women, he's the man!’ – Philadelphia Inquirer

‘To Brody's credit, his performance anchors that atmosphere, but everyone in the cast is strong.’ – London Free Press

‘Brody and Ryan are two inspired casting decisions. They are beautiful people, which skew our perspective, of course. But they are both capable of subtle performances.’ – The Detroit News

‘But Brody's understated performance serves him well, counterbalancing the showier roles given to the Dukakis characters and to the other major characters, all female.’ – Chicago Sun Times

‘Brody is adorable, funny and seriously cute, without being as self-conscious or reflexive with quips as he was as Seth on “The O.C.” Carter might be experiencing some emotional upheaval, but he’s a solid, companionable guy.’ – tuskman.com

‘Brody handles this character with the same LA scepticism and clever word play that fans have long (well, not too long) loved in his portrayal of Cohen. He shows a real reach from his small screen alter-ego in the long silences and complete detachedness from his surroundings. He is not excitable or over-analyzing about his situation, but sees everything through gray-coloured glasses that make most of his responses concerning his heart-break and lack of direction some form of "meh."’ - The GW Hatchet

‘Holding down the center is Brody, late of TV's "The O.C." and "Gilmore Girls." His persona melds Topher Grace and Zach Brach without either's self-consciousness. He's a normal-looking guy who can be funny but never goes overboard; essentially this is a straight performance with some drolly amusing moments, but he manages to take even the most strained moment or line of dialogue and make it not only palatable but compelling.’ – goTriad.com

“Brody is one of the best reasons to see this movie -- he makes Carter much more interesting to watch than the dialogue would merit. He looks like a young Dan Ackroyd and sounds like Matthew Broderick at times, and there's something oddly compelling about him.” – Cinematical

Basically the poster they used for the film showed Adam and Kristen's character kissing making it look like the film was a going to be a romance between these two characters, which it was not at all.

Oh, right! So they're hardly ever together in it?

Thanks for the new thread.

You're both welcome.

Well they do have scenes together in it but nothing romantic is going on between them, they just have one kiss and that's it. He also kisses Meg Ryan's character as well so the fact they focused on the kiss with Kristen in the advertising is kinda silly. But I guess it's understandable when you look at the market they were aiming for.

I've lost count the amount of times I've seen sleepless in seattle. And I find it very ironic that Adam was likened to Tom Hanks when he was on the OC and then he goes and makes a film with Meg Ryan!

Yep they did, in the same way the likened Ben to Russell Crowe. They even referenced it in the show, remember the distance when Seth and Ryan are coming up with stories for Seth's trip and he mentions two Tom Hanks movies. And I'm sure it wasn't a coincidence that they got Colin Hanks to pay Grady in the L.A episode. Or maybe it's just me reading too much into things.

They compared Ben to Russell Crowe?!
Haha, you never know, they may have cast him as the part for people like you to notice.

Yep, I guess cause he kinda looks like him. I read it all in articles about the OC written when it was a big phenomenon.

Hee, hee maybe. It's kinda sad that I notice silly things like that.

Yeah, they wanted all the teenager (especially girls) to go and see the movie, so it's no wonder that they focused on Kristen and Adam. But maybe more people of all ages would have gone and seen the movie if they had known what it's really about!?
