Comics Continuum: Wanted -- Common

WANTED: COMMON

LOS ANGELES -- Wanted is Common's first comic-book movie, but it might not be his last.

The hip-hop artist continues his transition into acting as the Gunsmith in the Friday-debuting Wanted, based on the Top Cow series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. But he's created just as many headlines as a possible Green Lantern in Warner Bros.' Justice League of America.

Common told The Continuum he auditioned for director George Miller and was "considered" for the role, but was careful to go any further, particularly since the film missed its original production start and seems to be in a state of flux.

"It was exciting. It was so hopeful man," Common said. "It was like, 'Man, I'm going to be part of something that is going to explode on the world.' It was going to be powerful. You felt like it was going to be a great project. JLA, man. George Miller.

"Just the start of it felt so good. JLA -- that's one of my favorite comics. You've got all these great characters. God willing, it may happen.

"I was enthused about being considered. I don't know what's happening. It's definitely divine timing with the right characters and the right actors at the right time of our careers. I would love to be Green Lantern. I was just started to get into digesting who he would be, John Stewart. I started reading so much about Green Lantern -- a cool character."

In Wanted, Common's Gunsmith is also a cool character.

"The Gunsmith is the master of the weaponry," he said. "If your gun has a problem, I'm fixing it. So I needed to know how to take apart guns and put them together. I needed to know the ins and outs of guns. I would follow the actual arms guy that was on the movie. I would sit with him in the truck and watch him fix these guns."

The character doesn't have many lines, but provides impetus for Wesley's transformation from a loser. Common said he created a backstory for the Gunsmith to help him with the role.

"He's really like a spiritual guy," he said. "You knew he could kick your ass and shoot good, but he also wasn't a beast. He wasn't just using it for evil. He really wanted to train Wesley to become, not only good at weaponry, but to become a warrior, mentally, spirtually and emotionally. "

Morgan Freeman, who plays Sloan, gave Common solid advice, he said.

"He reminded me to be alive in the scene, even if you're not speaking," Common said. "There's something going on. It was important for me, that whatever the Gunsmith's thoughts were, they needed to be there."

He said a lot of that comes from the work he put into the character beforehand.

"Once you get to that set, whatever you're given, you can roll with it," he said. "Because that character is alive. If they give me more dialogue, I'm able to spit it out and it's going to be in the form of the character. If that take away dialogue, there's no dialouge, the character's still alive in that scene because I know who the character is. The core of the character is there."

Common -- whose next film is Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins -- said he likes working in both worlds of acting and music.

"I feel a lot freer doing music because I'm doing movie," he said. "It takes pressure off the music. I'm actually having more fun with music because I'm doing movies. I guess that's just because it's not my only source of expression any more. Music is not my only source of that. And when you're doing other things, you can create your art from a freer place."

Gosh, this project better be a go. Lately it's been all talk, and not enough actual action!

Justice League ready for take-off

It seems all systems are go for George Miller’s superhero epic Justice League, despite earlier reports the options on the cast had lapsed amid doubts about the film’s financing.
Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with plans to make Justice League in time for a 2009 debut and Miller has started pre-production in Australia, according to Variety.
The production was put on hold in January, reportedly because the script needed further revision, which wasn’t possible while the scribes were on strike.
Writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney are doing a polish, which is expected to be finished in several weeks, Variety reports.
If Warners has pressed the green light, that may mean there is no longer an issue about whether Justice League will qualify for the Australian government’s tax offset, which in turn had raised suggestions that the production may be lost to Canada.
The cast is headed by Adam Brody as the Flash, with rapper Common as Green Lantern, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman and Armie Hammer Jr as Batman.

Thank you for posting the articles everyone, I'm a little behind on JL news. Interesting how that last article didn't mention who would be playing Superman.

I hope they can finally make it*sigh* Poor Adam. But they should hurry, because I don't think Adam will wait forever for this role.

Yeah, that's what I hope, too!! But it could be, because I think he already has signed some kind of contract, so I'm can imagine that he has to wait till it's clear if they will make the movie or not

They will film the movie next year!

Megan Gale proves she's a real wonder woman

August 01, 2008 12:00am

Her big star vehicle Justice League Of America may be stalled but Megan Gale can take comfort the film's director is loudly singing her praises.

Aussie Dr George Miller, who picked up an Oscar for Happy Feet in 2006, has confided the retired Aussie supermodel "blitzed her opposition" when she read for the part of Wonder Woman in the sci-fi film, which has stalled because of the US actors' strike.

"She got the job because she blitzed her screen test. I mean, I had no idea she was so good. She was brilliant," Miller said.

"She walked into our office in Sydney and read the part. She has done some Italian movies but I didn't think she would be as good as she was.

"But once she read we all looked around at each other said, 'well, there's no question'."

Miller said Gale had only a few hours of acting training with famed NIDA acting coach Nico Lathouras before her audition. "I told him to spend a couple of days with her but he spent three hours with her and came to me and said, 'look, she is a natural'.

"It's one of those things - some people can run fast without any training and acting is the same. And Megan is one of those people who can just act."

After such glowing praise, Gale will no doubt be crossing her manicured fingers that the troubled film does finally get off the ground.

Miller said the flick's production, initially planned for Oz, has been moved offshore, with a plan to resume filming next year.

Baruchel stays close to the pack

By KEVIN WILLIAMSON - Sun Media

With super friends like Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow and Ben Stiller, who needs the Justice League?

Still, it's hard to mistake the disappointment -- or enthusiasm -- in Jay Baruchel's voice when he discusses the mega-budgeted comic-book extravaganza that almost was.

"I really, really hope it happens. It was the coolest thing in the world for a nerd like me," says the 26-year-old Montrealer, best recognized from last year's Knocked Up, Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby and the Apatow-produced TV series Undeclared. "It was going to be awesome."

And frankly we're probably going to have to take his word on that. Baruchel -- who won't reveal what role he'd signed for, although rumours had him pegged as one of the villains -- was in Australia last December rehearsing when Warner Bros. unceremoniously banished the production to a purgatorial phantom zone. Among probable reasons why? The toxic buzz the League movie -- despite being helmed by The Road Warrior's legendary George Miller -- was generating online. With neither big-screen Batman Christian Bale nor Superman Brandon Routh on-board, fanboys balked at the decision to recast young unknowns as those spandex-clad icons. "Everyone on the Internet was hating our movie," Baruchel says. "But you know us cast members were psyched that everybody was gunning for us because it would have only meant people would have been blown away that much more. We knew the bulk of the detractors would have been silenced."

Not that Baruchel isn't staying busy while he awaits final word on League's fate.

Well lets hope this is the final word now. And if filming doesn't start till next year then that gives Adam some time to do another film.

Nah, all the actors were released off their contracts after everything that happened in January. So the WB do have the ability to change the cast, although I don't think George Miller wants to.
