Adam Brody - This star of "The O.C." was looking very Seth Cohen in a maroon sweater and riding around in the Four Seasons elevator. Brody informs Zap2it.com that he had taken in a screening of "Winter Passing" -- starring Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel and Ed Harris -- which he describes as "quirky." The young actor is in town for his film "Thank You for Smoking," which is making its debut at the festival and co-stars Aaron Eckhart, William H. Macy, Maria Bello and Katie Holmes.

WELL BROUGHT UP: That was "The O.C." heartthrob Adam Brody the other day at L.A.'s Coffee Bean, proving that chivalry isn't dead. When a Lowdown spy accidentally dropped some napkins on the floor - said spy assures me it wasn't a cheeseball update on the lady-dropping-the-handkerchief ploy - Brody leapt into the breach. Before she could bend over to retrieve them, he dutifully got down and saved her the trouble.

Young director can't believe his film stars Robert Duvall, William H. Macy
Saturday, September 10th, 2005

TORONTO (CP) - Director Jason Reitman still can't quite figure out why stars like Robert Duvall, William H. Macy, Rob Lowe, Adam Brody and Aaron Eckhart agreed to star in his first full-length film, Thank You for Smoking.

"I can't imagine why any of these actors would want to work with me," Reitman told a news conference Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"We started holding rehearsals and they were at my house and every day the doorbell would ring and I'd open the door and I'd be like 'Oh my god, what are you doing at my house? You really want to do this film?' . . . I got really lucky, is the truth of it . . . "

Reitman, the Montreal-born son of director Ivan Reitman, decided to make the film about seven years ago after reading the novel of the same name by Christopher Buckley.

"I fell in love with it. Page One. Knocked me out. It was the funniest book I've ever read," said Reitman.

The film skewers the idea of political correctness through the story of Eckhart's character, Nick Naylor, a fast-talking tobacco lobbyist constantly trying to explain his job to his young son, played by Cameron Bright of Nanaimo, B.C.

Eckhart, who has also appeared in In the Company of Men and Erin Brockovich, told the news conference that there is a simple reason why so many big-name actors agreed to be in Reitman's film.

"It has to do with the material. You go to where the material is the best," he said.

"That's the great thing about an independent film. You can make a movie for two cents if you have the material. Actors want to say good words and be able to stretch themselves."

But Reitman still appeared to be pinching himself Saturday that he had finally finished the star-studded film.

"This has been a whirlwind," he said of his experience at the festival. "I'm kind of in a dream and I'm waiting to wake up."
