'AVERAGE JOE' SOARS TO A FIVE-YEAR SLOT HIGH AND 'LAS VEGAS' HITS SERIES-RECORD NUMBERS

THE REALITY HIT 'AVERAGE JOE' ATTRACTS NBC'S HIGHEST 18-49 RATING WITH REGULAR SERIES IN THE MONDAY 10 P.M. HOUR SINCE JUNE 1998

THE SEASON'S #1 NEW DRAMA IN 18-49, 'LAS VEGAS,' GRABS NBC'S HIGHEST REGULAR-PROGRAM RATING IN THAT SLOT IN NEARLY 16 MONTHS

'FEAR FACTOR' MATCHES ITS HIGHEST REGULAR-SLOT 18-49 RATING SINCE MARCH

NBC WINS THE NIGHT IN 18-49 WHILE EQUALING THE HIGHEST MONDAY AVERAGE FOR ANY NETWORK THIS SEASON

BURBANK, Calif. -- December 2, 2003 -- NBC has dominated Monday's ratings race among adults 18-49 with sizzling numbers from "Average Joe," "Las Vegas" and "Fear Factor."

"Average Joe" leaped to NBC's highest 18-49 rating in the Monday 10-11 p.m. ET hour with regular series programming since "Dateline NBC" on June 8, 1998. "Las Vegas" set series records and delivered NBC's highest regular-program rating in the Monday 9-10 p.m. hour since "Dog Eat Dog" on Aug. 5, 2002. "Fear Factor" matched its highest regular-slot rating since its Miss USA edition of March 24.

NBC won the night convincingly in 18-49, up 29 percent versus its rating for the same night last year. NBC equaled the highest Monday 18-49 average for any network this season, including nights of ABC football and Fox baseball. NBC has won three of the last five Mondays in 18-49.

According to preliminary "fast affiliate-based" in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, "Fear Factor" (6.1 rating, 16 share among adults 18-49, 14.3 million viewers overall) led the 8-9 p.m. ET hour in virtually every key category.

"Fear Factor" is the fastest-growing network reality series this fall versus year-ago results. Heading into last night, "Fear" was up 12 percent for the season in 18-49 (with a 5.7 rating versus last year's 5.1) while ABC's "The Bachelor" is down 19 percent (6.4 vs. 7.9) and CBS' "Survivor" is down 8 percent (7.6 vs. 8.3). In overall total viewers, "Fear Factor" is up 12 percent (with 13.2 million viewers vs. 11.8 million) while "The Bachelor" is down 18 percent (13.7 million vs. 16.8 million) and "Survivor" is down 2 percent (20.4 million vs. 20.8 million).

From 9-10 p.m. ET, "Las Vegas" (5.6/13 in 18-49, 13.0 million viewers overall) jumped 19 percent above NBC's 18-49 average in this slot last season. Last night's "Las Vegas" is currently listed #1 in the hour among adults 18-34, women 18-34 and women 18-49 and is the slot's top non-sports choice among adults 18-49, men 18-49 and men 25-54. "Las Vegas" is easily the season's #1 new drama in 18-49.

At 10 p.m. ET, "Average Joe" (7.2/18 in 18-49, 14.1 million viewers overall) equaled television's highest 18-49 rating for any reality show on any network since the Nov. 19 finale of ABC's "The Bachelor." "Average Joe" soared 44 percent above its 18-49 rating of the previous week and saw last night's rating increase by a powerful 1.2 rating points from its first half-hour to its second, an exceptional build for a 10 p.m. show. "Joe" is currently listed #1 in the time period in all key adult and adult-female categories. The "Average Joe" finale is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 8, from 9-11 p.m. ET.

Preliminary Dec. 1 nightlong 18-49 averages are: NBC, 6.3/16; ABC, 5.3/13; CBS, 4.5/11; Fox, 2.4/6; UPN, 1.5/4; WB, 1.3/3. Last night's preliminary total viewer averages are: CBS, 14.2 million; ABC, 14.2 million; NBC, 13.8 million; Fox, 5.5 million; WB, 4.0 million; UPN, 3.5 million. Significant adjustments to these fast affiliate-based results are possible when Nielsen issues official national results this afternoon, particularly in the case of live telecasts such as ABC's "Monday Night Football."

I've read something about this somewhere, but is there a concrete official-type reason that NBC is putting off the original 1x11, "The Night the Lights Went Out in Vegas"? I think someone said it was related to JD's injury, but...

Wildfire Girl 01-04-2004 07:35 PM

Injury? And I know that they have pushed the eppy back, according to TV Tome, but I didn't know why.

Wild Pikachu 01-05-2004 06:04 PM

Yeah, JD had a "sports injury" in his hamstring. It's why they had Danny get shot in the leg, to explain why he won't be walking around much in the next couple months.
