Joan of Arc(adia) - History vs. Television - Past vs. Present

so, since the show is somehow built on the legend. i thought we need that thread. also because at least i hope that history and how it is related to the present Joan will be explored in future episodes.

so this is also a place for speculation and theories on the subject.

post ahead!

There was one thing I was upset about in the past episode "St. Joan". I was mad because God did not answer Joan when she asked if Joan of Arc was indeed crazy. I personally think that in the show, he did come to her. As far as in reality, I'm not sure.

i think i have to re-read the legend before i make up my mind. and i have to watch the last episode. i'm always a little behind

which brings me to another question: have you watched one of the movies about Joan of Arc? i think the one with milla jovovich (sp?) was the latest?!

I honestly didn't know anything about Joan of Arc, until I saw the previews, then talked to a previous student, and she gave me the basic run down. I thought it was really interesting to bring that into play in the show (well of course it had to happen eventually)

my opinion on the fact that God did not answer about Joan of Arc, is to make Joan continue to wonder. God never exactly is straight forward about things. The whole not giving reasons, just saying to do it. Makes Joan figure it out on her own.

I've been meaning to watch the movie. I'll have to work on that, not to mention I'm curious about the rest of the history of it now.

Joan of Arcadia is so interesting because if your religious you get something out of it but its completely different than someone who doesn't believe at all or if your really faithful or not really at all. If you were forced to believe or if it was all just natural. It also brings up what IF God was one of us

I think God didn't answer the question whether the real Joan of Arc was crazy, because then it would give an answer to Joan. If the real Joan was crazy, then Joan would assume she was crazy. And it would cause more problems. If the real Joan wasn't crazy, then that loses something in Joan, in God's eyes.

I must say, I don't know much about the true Joan of Arc. But I think it's a interesting concept to bring to television.

Also, I think God likes the idea of making Joan a little off skiter with his commands. And so, God doesn't want to give the truth away...

And does anyone really know the truth, given that it was a different time and era.

I'm a terrible history nerd and so I was curious how they'd portray the 'real' Joan. As was to be expected there were no answers, neither from the show nor from God. Remember, God never answers question because faith is about believing and not about 'truth'.

I personally don't believe in God - I consider myself an agnostic- but then again I never considered the 'real' Joan crazy. I'd say she was inspired. I tend to avoid black and white answers. I love the various shades of grey.

I haven't seen the Luc Besson movie with Milla Jovovich as Joan but I know the mini series with Leelee Sobieski and loved it despite having some issues with the presentaion of historical facts.

Yeah, history nerd very much. I'm about to get together a list of websites devoted to Joan D'Arc for a website of mine anyway, so if anyone's intesrest I can link you up.

This is what interests me most about the show at the moment. God didn't answer Joan when she asked of Joan of Arc was crazy, I also don't think he answered her when she asked if she was 'her' (Joan of Arc) because that was one thing I was really speculating on from the beginning of the show. Why call it Joan of Arcadia, such an obvious reference to Joan of Arc if you aren't going to have connections between the two?

I saw the Leelee Sobieski version too but, not being blessed with that much historical knowledge (well, except for the basic stuff), I didn't pick up on many - well, any - discrepancies. I was just so very touched by it.

The thing to remember about Joan of Arc, for me anyway, isn't whether God was actually speaking to her or not. It's that a young girl did what no man had done in a time when women weren't really allowed to do all that much. And she was obviously carried by her faith. Which tells you an awful lot about the importance, the significance, and just the vitality of such a faith.

You don't even have to consider whether or not God was actually talking to her. She believed so much, and did so much as a result, that he/she might has well been.

As for doing Joan of Arcadia... What I like about the premise is that it is Joan of Arc. It is. It's a teenage girl and God talks to her.

Except, nowadays, not everyone believes in God. God isn't an accepted reality. Not in the way it was back then. So that our Joan doesn't tell people. She just takes it all in. And, at first, she's not even sure it's really God.

It is Joan. But, if Joan of Arc had been a teenager today... You can bet your butt she would have asked questions. Which is the genius of this show!

ghani - I'd love to see your list of links.

Here's an article from Encarta, if anyone is interested in finding out the basics.
Encarta - Saint Joan of Arc

One interesting point is that Joan of Arc believed her visions came from St. Michael, St. Catherine of Alexandria, and St. Margaret rather than directly from God.

Anyone know any good books to read up on Joan of Arc?

I've finally seen one of the movie versions (the one w/ Leelee b/c Kris Lemche was in it)... but I'm actually interested in reading about her.

I'm open to any books b/c I have a bunch of time on my hand up until the end of summer. Thanks a bunch in advance
