This year has been a lot. And in the days after the election, having spent the year saying yes to each & every thing that might help, where I could lend a hand, boost a platform or leader, raise funds for justice ... where my one little self could do maybe one more thing in the grand scheme of things being done? I ran out of fuel. The collective trauma of the last four years has been heightened in COVID. This year felt like a fever pitch & I hit empty. As the universe would have it, this also coincided with the timing of being called back to a pre-pandemic job. But what is pre-pandemic, because our minds & hearts are steeped in global-hurt & fear? After isolating & testing multiple times — my god it infuriates me that productions value us enough to test us for our safety & that our current government does no such kind of testing for our teachers & healthcare workers. Show me your budget and I’ll know your priorities, as they say — seven of us who have been waiting a year to make a movie we care deeply about entered a full isolation bubble. No one in & no one out for four weeks. We gave up the holiday with our loved ones because we love & miss art. We had so much to pour into this story, written by Noga Pnueli, which happens to be one of the best scripts I’ve read in years. We hunkered down to figure out how to live inside of a house we were also filming in, to further limit exposure. We quite literally lived our movie. It was hard & glorious & so strange & so life-giving. And aside from signal boosting some news stories, I gave myself the length of production to share myself only with my cast & crew, and my loved ones back home on FaceTimes in fleeting free moments. I forgot how 14 hour days on set can go! But my oh my I feel restored. I feel the tug of a slow winter too, of rest & healing. I feel the responsibility to stay isolated, & pitch in to slow the spread. I feel relieved that we’ll have leadership & a national plan soon. I missed you all. And I missed art. And it was glorious to leave for a while to make some. I’m in my feelings, & in deep gratitude today. Sending you all so much ♥️ I’m back!
