Shown that he was isolated in subtle ways, like him in the background of a scene when the others were together.

So then the audience could have looked back and learnt something from how much they missed that could have told them what was going to happen.

You would have to do that at the time though, not in flashbacks of those scenes.

You can show it happening and then tell the audience of all these moments they missed, then they can go back and look.
