ARTICLES ON THE CW AND SEASON FOUR

Source: Variety.com

New net looks familiar
CW relies on weblet fare

Upstart netlet the CW will add just one new sitcom and one new drama to its first fall lineup, preferring to rely mostly on returning WB and UPN faves.
"Girlfriends" spinoff "The Game" and Darren Star drama "Runaway" scored series pickups, while the Kevin Williamson sudser "Palm Springs" -- on tap for midseason -- landed an eight-episode greenlight. Bubble shows "Veronica Mars" and "One Tree Hill" also made the cut, with full 22-episode orders.

The CW, which will announce its inaugural primetime sked Thursday at Madison Square Garden, also plans to bring back hourlongs "Gilmore Girls," "Supernatural" and "Smallville" from the WB, as well as half-hours "Everybody Hates Chris," "All of Us" and "Girlfriends" from UPN.

Also, "7th Heaven" is expected to return for an unprecedented 11th season (Daily Variety, May 12). Net has already announced renewals for alternative skeins "America's Next Top Model," "Beauty and the Geek" and "Friday Night Smackdown."

Series that failed to make the grade include "Everwood" and "Reba" at the WB, as well as much of UPN's urban laffer lineup ("One on One," "Half & Half," "Eve"). The "Reba" cancellation wasn't a surprise -- the CW informed producer 20th Century Fox last week that the show wouldn't return, even though the WB had been committed to the show through next year (Daily Variety, May 8).

"Everwood," meanwhile, leaves the air after four seasons and 89 episodes.
Also Thursday, the CW is set to officially unveil its new logo. The curvy design takes elements from logos including CNN's twisty letters and "The OC's" strategic use of the word "The." New design, with its curly, connected letters, also is reminiscent of the NBC "snake" logo used by the Peacock web in the 1960s.
As for the netlet's crop of new entries, cherry-picking the WB and UPN skeds left little room for new product -- hence the decision to pick up just three new skeins. The CW had anticipated such small needs, having ordered only four drama and three comedy pilots.

"Runaway," from Sony Pictures TV, stars Donnie Wahlberg as a father wrongly convicted of murder. His family decides to go on the run in an effort to clear his name. Leslie Hope, Susan Floyd, Karen LeBlanc and Dustin Milligan also star.
The Williamson project, which is still tentatively titled, follows the exploits of a troubled teen who moves to Palm Springs and discovers unusual goings-on. Gail O'Grady, Sharon Lawrence, Amber Heard, Michael Cassidy, Taylor Handley and D.W. Moffett star in the Lionsgate show.

As for the comedy, "The Game" focuses on the girlfriends and wives of pro football players. Series, from CBS Paramount Network TV and Grammnet, stars Wendy Raquel Robinson, Hosea Chanchez, Aldis Hodge, Coby Bell and Tia Mowry.

The "Veronica Mars" pickup is sure to warm the hearts of the show's tiny but rabidly loyal fan base, which took to renting planes and sending large care packages to CW Entertainment prexy Dawn Ostroff in hopes of saving the show. "Mars" may wind up being paired with "Gilmore Girls" on the netlet's sked.
Meanwhile, the CW's adaptation of "Aquaman," once considered a shoo-in for fall, wound up being sunk.[/b]

What? No mention of the *rabid* One Tree Hill fans??

FANS COME TO THE RESCUE OF ONE BELOVED SHOW

If I ever run for office, start a cult or aspire to be the next Kelly Clarkson, let me tell you, I want the fans of a certain show on my side.

The results are in for this year's Save One Show campaign, in which nearly a million fans voted for the endangered series they can't live without. And One show is the clear winner.

The envelope please...

Fifth Place: What About Brian, 3%
Fourth Place: Everwood, 7%
Third Place: Supernatural, 14%
Runner-Up: Veronica Mars, 32%
And the Winner Is: One Tree Hill, 44%

Yes, One Tree Hill has been selected as the one show you TV fans just can't live without. Congratulations, you loyal Tree huggers!

(I should also mention that although you Veronica Mars fans may be heartbroken, I have stunning news to share with you on the third page that you must check out.)

Since so many of you voted this year--958,017 total to be exact--this should send a very clear message to the new CW network's chief, Dawn Ostroff, that One Tree Hill deserves to stick around. She's set to decide its fate in the next two weeks, before announcing the new CW schedule on May 18.

Still, to make absolutely sure she hears your OTH battle cry, I will be sending Ostroff a big ol' care package this week declaring One Tree Hill as the official Save One Show winner, along with my own letter of support and personal messages from you, the fans. So, if you want to tell Ostroff why OTH deserves to come back next season, please email your message to tvdiva@eonline.com.

If you aren't yet a fan of One Tree Hill, I'm guessing you haven't had the chance to watch an episode this season, given its less than ideal time slot against American Idol. But we here at E! are going all out to rectify that!

After we declared One Tree Hill the winner, Warner Bros. was kind enough to give us exclusive rights to air an entire episode of One Tree Hill on our cool broadband channel, the Vine at E! Online.

You can watch it by clicking on the video box on this page. This is your last chance until (hopefully) fall to see the show that nearly a million fans say is the best thing going on the small screen, so please, take advantage of it and get behind this show.

If you are already a fan, you should know the cast and crew could not love you more. "We feel so spoiled!" says Hilarie Burton (Peyton). "You know, when I worked at MTV for years, our whole thing was 'All right, this show is really hot and moving on, what's next?' And our fans have stayed really devoted to us throughout the whole run, so it's extraordinarily flattering."

"Our fans are rabid and will defend us to the grave," says executive producer Mark Schwahn. "And the thing is, the CW won't just be getting the fan base of my show. If they see the power and the passion of our fans--those people will become CW fans. And if I'm starting a network, I want that in my corner."

James Lafferty (Nathan) admits he's not surprised by the win, because of his crew's grassroots effort to develop their fan base. "The producers and the actors and everyone involved creatively with the show have so much interaction with the fans," he says. "I think that's sort of unprecedented. We really do make an effort to bring the show out into the fans' world as much as possible, and I think it's showing results. Mark talking to the fans online, the mall tour and Joy Lenz (Haley) going out on tour with Michelle Branch, things like that have helped us connect with our fans on a level outside of just the show every Wednesday night."

The best news is that Ostroff is definitely aware of this very Save One Show poll, since her current network, UPN, aired commercial spots last year touting Veronica Mars as the 2005 SOS winner. Furthermore, Schwahn tells me, "I just met with Dawn, and I mentioned it to her. I said, 'I know Veronica Mars won this poll last year, and I would bet the house that we win it this year.' And she said, 'Because you paid someone off?' And I said, 'No, because our fans are incredibly loyal.' "

Smart man. Still, Schwahn insists he's still truly in the dark as to OTH's fate. "I'm legitimately waiting and don't expect to hear until May 18," he says. "The WB asked me if I wanted to wrap up the show, and I said, 'No, I'm going to write cliffhangers like we always do, because I'm going to bet on my show, and I'm going to make it really hard for you to make that decision!' "

And so he gave us one doozie of a season finale this week, did he not? Pregnancy shockers, a doom and gloom car crash and Dan possibly, finally getting his comeuppance. Schwahn hints that if there is a fourth season, the Lucas-Peyton-Brooke triangle will become "more complex," we'll find out who's pregnant, Rachel will become a series regular and Mouth will finally get some lovin'. "I just hung up the phone with Lee Norris, who plays Mouth," says Schwahn, "and nobody wants the show to come back more than he does!"
Of course, Schwahn wants it pretty bad himself. And though he swears he'll go anywhere--"even Saturdays at noon!"--he also cites his dream pairings: Top Model, Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars.

When asked about the "my show is better than your show" animosity that sprang up this season between Tree-huggers and Mars-ians (which likely arose out of these two fan favorites sharing the same time slot), Schwahn says: "I assume that if we get on the same network or on the same night or whatever, a lot of that will go away. I love that our fans are protective of us, but I would hope that we can all peacefully coexist!"
Here, here.

That said, we're moving on to some lip-smacking scoop on the SOS runner-up, Veronica Mars. But you OTH fans can get even more of a fix with the transcripts of my interviews with Hilary Burton, Mark Schwahn and James Lafferty in the message boards, where Schwahn offers up some good scoop on season four!

One Tree Hill is up for "Best Guilty Pleasure" in TV Gal's Zap2it Awards. It's also up for "Worst Show", but I don't think you want to vote for that.

Thanks for the new thread! According to OTH fans filming has been bumped up to July 20th.

Also what a great article. We have an awesome cast!

Quote:
Douglas High School student Adriana Figueroa, only 17 years of age, received devastating news on May 24, 2005.

Just two weeks shy of completing her sophomore year, Adriana was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after suffering several months of abdominal pain and discomfort. Since then she's faced hardships and her life will never be the same.

Figueroa was treated at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Care Center, where she had the tumor removed. Within the tumor removed there were three types of cancerous cells. The tumor was the size of a cantaloupe, which was reason for concern.

Due to her illness Figueroa had to undergo chemotherapy, which consisted of 20 sessions, nine hours a day for five days, then she'd return home for two weeks. The chemotherapy was administered at the Tucson North West Hospital, where she spent most of her time sedated during treatment to avoid the symptoms and physical effects of the chemotherapy.

This treatment cycle began on June 20 and ended August 26, 2005.

Figueroa said, "The hardest part of having cancer was going through chemotherapy, I feared the symptoms and I dreaded the thought of losing my hair."

Figueroa is the oldest of three daughters. Her parents, Mario and Mercedes Figueroa, today continue to face the reality that their daughter is recovering from cancer.

According to statistics Adriana is one of the 5 percent of juveniles the get ovarian cancer. Her case is being studied at Harvard University and the University of Houston. With the guidance of these two institutions Dr. Alton Hallum has been able to properly treat Adriana. Adriana's younger sister Alexis, 13, was also diagnosed with ovarian tumors on April 27, 2005. At her early age, she had surgery to remove two tumors in her ovaries and one in the right fallopian tube, which was 15 pounds and caused some deformity that had to be repaired.

The surgery worked well for Alexis, but unfortunately doctors have found that she has elevated cancer cells. Like her sister, Figueroa was also diagnosed with elevated cancer cells. As a result they both remain under Dr. Hallum's care and need to get ultrasounds, pelvic exams and cat scans as part of their medical treatment to avoid any new cases of cancer.

In spite of this bitter experience, Figueroa has felt the support of her family, friends and medical staff.

After her chemotherapy she lost all of her hair and to show support her uncles Luis and Carlos Gonzales, nino Martin Figueroa and cousin Carlos Gonzales Jr. shaved all of their hair. Then when her hair began to grow back they let it grow along with hers to show their support.

Aside from the support of her family, the hospital staff enrolled Adriana in the Make-A- Wish Foundation Program.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

The Make A Wish Foundation was founded in 1980 and since then its become a very well know, reaching more than 144,000 children worldwide.

Fortunately, Figueroa was a good candidate and eligible for a wish, because she's less than 18 years of age and had a life-threatening condition. The foundation has a network of more than 25,000 volunteers that enable it to serve children with life-threatening conditions. The volunteers serve as wish granters, special events coordinators and fund raisers among other duties.

The volunteers in charge of Figueroa's wish were Liza and Kevin Kushner whom with the help of her parents were able to begin the process of enrolling her in the program.

Soon Figueroa got to make a wish, surprisingly her first choice was a Pug dog which the foundation declined due to policy. The foundation notified her that they would only grant elaborate wishes, something impossible for her to get.

Her wish then became to meet the Cast of "One Tree Hill" her favorite TV show. To her surprise her wish was granted and on Sunday, March 5, 2006 she was on her way to eastern North Carolina to meet the cast members.

The foundation financed all trip, flight, hotel, car rental, and limousine service expenses for the entire family.

The six-day trip allowed Adriana to visit the different sets of the show, but most importantly to meet some of the main cast members. She also got to give the cast members bracelets she made herself and flowers. The bracelets were hand made by Figueroa who said, "I made each bracelet according to their personality on the show, they were specifically color beaded, which they really liked."

During her visit she met Deb Scott-Barbara Alynwood, James Lafferty-Nathan Scott, Hilary Burton-Peyton Sawyer, Bethany Jot Lenz-Haley James, Paul Johanson-Dan Scott, the production, direction, hair and make-up and wardrobe crews.

Unfortunately, Sophia Bush-Brook Davis and Chad Michael Murray-Lucas Scott were out of town and she didn't get to meet them in person.

Surprisingly after her visit Figueroa received great news from Assistant to Producer Beth Crockham. Crockham called Figueroa to tell her that actress Sophia Bush would be wearing the bracelet she gave her on the third season's episode because she felt terrible that she didn't get to meet her.

Aside from meeting the cast members, site seeing in North Carolina, visiting the sets of "One Tree Hill" and being treated like royalty Figueroa received autographed pictures of all cast members and free items like a signed calendar and the show's season DVDs. Figueroa said, "I didn't think meeting the cast of "One Tree Hill and going to North Carolina to visit the set was possible, it's something I'll never forget."

Her family says it's been a wakening experience, something they thought would never happen to them. Mercedes Figueroa said, "I felt that God was testing me as a mother and my faith, but now I know Adriana is going to be ok along with my other daughter Alexis." Now that Figueroa has overcome the illness she says she sees herself as a different person, someone who is stronger thanks to the support of family and friends.

Adriana said, "My advice to others in similar conditions would be to not let the circumstances make you angry or resentful, learn how to cope and use any resource that can make you stronger and triumphant."

aw thanks for that article!

Quote:
After her chemotherapy she lost all of her hair and to show support her uncles Luis and Carlos Gonzales, nino Martin Figueroa and cousin Carlos Gonzales Jr. shaved all of their hair. Then when her hair began to grow back they let it grow along with hers to show their support.
That's so sweet.
