It's like Skills said in s4, Peyton just happened to be there (in the library) but Lucas CHOSE to be there. He always did that when it came to Peyotn. He always chose to be with her through her trials, even when he was with someone else.

He did, that's something he admitted in s4. He said he knew that what Peyton said in the library was true, he just didn't want to admit it because he didn't want to hurt Brooke. And he also wrote about that in his book when he was reminiscing about their kiss in 4x09. Oh and he also said it in 3x01, "it's always going to be there isn't it? You and me."

He had his moments, but that was true of all the characters. I didn't like how he acted in late s5, for instance but once he woke up--he treated Peyton the way she deserved and didn't take their relationship for granted again.

I agree, season 5 was not his best season. He was so not in check with his heart that season.
