I think traditionally you chose close friends to be godparents and when the child is christian as a baby they take an oath. But you can have someone a godparent and not christian the child. I don't think godparents are very common anymore.
But I think for the most part you don't have family members that are godparents. Like a brother, you are already going to be the uncle. __________________
