Oh, I agree with this They really went out of their way to destroy Marissa with the Volchuk nonsense. The guy's attitude and behavior was repulsive, and her addiction to him was so forced and gross.

They should have spent more time on rebuilding Ryan/Marissa. Their last happy episode together is something like 3x04, which is insane, because it means that they had literally just slept together for the first time and it all goes to pieces. Also, her father got seriously beat up in the same episode.

Them doing that would surprise me considering they were writing Marissa off at that point.

Yeah, I think they thought by making her not herself anymore the majority of fans wouldn't mind them killing her off. Wrong. I still stand by that they should have just let her go with her father like she was supposed to.

I think that would have been the smartest decision.

The ratings wouldn't have dropped a lot then.

Wasn't it going up against one of the most popular shows in tv in seasons 2 and 3?

they were up against 3 different popular shows back in S2 according to this O.C. podcast I listen to and Wikipedia

Quote:
The show moved to "ultra-competitive Thursday"[22] nights which Schwartz described as a "real vote of confidence [from] the network",[23] but many attributed placing The O.C. against the likes of Survivor, Joey and Will & Grace as part of The O.C.'s decline in popularity.[24][25] The move improved FOX's performance at the new time slot, but lost the show viewers.[26] The season premiere attracted 8.6 million viewers,[27] but average viewing figures decreased thirty percent from the previous season to 7 million.[28]
apparently back in the day they would also air The O.C. right after American Idol so that gave it a ratings boost in S1

It sucks the network didn't keep the show at their original time slot.
