ANd she delivered them so perfectly, she was the best choice they could possibly have made. <3

I'm wondering about that, too. I really want to get new pictures & stuff.

Palo Alto hits audiences close to home

Former Palo Alto residents create feature film based on their experiences

A scene from Palo Alto. After completing their first year of college, the characters in the movie return home to Palo Alto, where they discover new sides of themselves.

All movies start as a blank canvas. The ability to shape this canvas into a good film lies in the quality of the collaborative efforts put forth by the actors, directors and producers.

For Palo Alto, all of the pieces fit together perfectly, creating a film worthy of the hype, which spread throughout local social networking sites and lunchtime conversations.

The movie, put together principally by three Palo Alto natives, is loosely based on their experiences in Silicon Valley. The filmmakers, Tony Vallone, Brad Leong and Daniel Englehardt set out to depict the lives of four college freshmen who come back to Palo Alto for the first time since graduating.

The movie begins with the four friends roaming the halls of a fictionalized Paly. As their paths diverge, each encounters a different experience that opens their eyes to the allure of their forgotten hometown and, even more so, to undiscovered facets of themselves.

The cast features five young and talented actors: Aaron Ashmore (Alec), Johnny Lewis (Nolan), Ben Savage (Patrick), of Boy Meets World fame, Justin Mentell (Ryan) and Autumn Reeser (Jaime). Each of these character encounters a different problem that they must deal with.

Nolan is afraid of approaching any type of girl; Patrick is stuck trying to fast-forward his life instead of enjoying it; Alec is afraid to follow his true desires in life; Ryan is unable to express his true feelings; and Jaime is just crazy. As they find solutions to their various dilemmas, they are able to gain new perspectives on their old town of Palo Alto.

The beauty of the film lies in the film's ability to bring each of the individual characters together, weaving their story lines into one cohesive plot.

Each of the main characters experiences a change within themselves throughout the movie. In undergoing their transformation, each is assisted by their relationship with a minor character. A shining example of this is seen in the relationship of main character Nolan (Lewis) and minor character Jaime (Reeser). As the two characters grow closer, they help each other discover new things about themselves. The purposeful use of every character, whether major or secondary, is part of the appeal of Palo Alto.

The film sticks to a simple principle: each action contributes to the overall plot. Unlike popular teen dramas, such as The O.C. and The Hills, each action does not simply serve to lead the characters into more drama. Instead, each point of conflict gives more insight into the sociological mind set of each character.

The film's thematic message also avoids distractions, such as the unnecessary special effects and elaborate fight scenes that plague much of modern day cinema.

The film moves quickly enough to avoid monotony, while still allowing the audience to form its own opinions about each character and his or her experiences.

The film, made on a relatively small budget and filmed exclusively in the Bay Area, is a testament to the ability of a community to come together. Members of the Palo Alto community, including Paly students and parents, volunteered their time to appear in scenes and allowed the use of their homes.

Scenes were filmed in various locations around the Palo Alto area, from Paly to the streets of downtown Palo Alto.

Though audiences are sure to enjoy this lighthearted comedy, it does not accurately represent the lifestyle of Palo Alto teenagers.

Palo Alto depicts massive house parties seemingly going on all night, with inebriated teens littering the premises, which are seldom seen on the streets of the real Palo Alto. The audience must keep in mind that this is a movie made for teenagers and therefore, is expected to show these scenes.

The audience must also remember that the connection to the city stops at the title. Looking for favorite Palo Alto nuances will prove as unsuccessful as searching for the same intricacies in American Pie.

The movie, which commenced filming in December 2006 and entered post-production in April 2008, is now in the process of screening and distribution.

The movie screened in San Jose on Jan. 14 and 15. At each showing, Palo Alto found immense success in ticket sales, completely selling out for both.

The film also pleased local audiences, drawing words of praise from many members of the Palo Alto community that the film was intended to depict.

However, complaints about the film's R rating arose from some Paly students, many of whom were unable to see the film because of their age. Luckily, these students do not have to wait much longer to experience Palo Alto. The movie is being distributed to DVD on Feb. 17 and can be ordered through Palo Alto the Movie.
