| The OC Cancelled I have no idea is this is true but I found it on JJB Great Falls native turning heads in film world, not ballpark Brooks Robinson is a busy man in Hollywood. We're not talking about the great Baltimore Orioles third baseman from the 1960s and '70s. ADVERTISEMENT This Brooks Robinson graduated from Great Falls High School in 1987, and earned a film degree from Montana State University in Bozeman in 1991. Robinson moved after college to Los Angeles, where for more than a dozen years he shot commercials and music videos with stars like Madonna and Alanis Morisette. One of his commercial subjects was Wendy's founder Dave Thomas. Since last year, however, Robinson has gained a flurry of work. It helped when he did commercials with a director of photography, John Noll, who won cinematography Oscars for "Braveheart" and "Legends of the Fall." Noll last year invited Robinson to work on a horror film called "Rise," featuring Lucy Liu and Michael Chiklis. Then, Robinson worked full time with Noll on a star-studded film, "Seraphim Falls." Its fine cast included Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, Angie Harmon and Anjelica Huston. From there, Robinson did camera work on a sequel to "Bruce Almighty" called "Evan Almighty," starring Steve Carell, set for a June release. "As of right now, it's supposed to be the most expensive comedy ever made," Robinson said Friday in a telephone interview. Robinson said it's hard to know how successful a film will be while it's being made. But he said both films "had just tremendous people involved." "Evan Almighty," shot mainly in Virginia, featured funny people. At one point in filming, comedienne Wanda Sykes delivered hilarious lines as Evan's assistant. "I just had to close the eyepiece off," Robinson recalled. "I was laughing so hard I didn't want to shake the camera." Robinson also felt like shaking from cold in December 2005 filming "Seraphim Falls," as temperatures in New Mexico dipped to 15 degrees below zero. Last week, Robinson was at work shooting episode 11 of the new season of the struggling Fox teen drama, "The O.C." His last day for "The O.C." is Wednesday. Crewmembers learned this month that the network decided not to continue the series after these episodes run out in 2007. Robinson could use a break. He is married to Mary Jo Love Robinson, another 1987 Bison graduate, and they have a son, Lucas. His wife and son have been able to visit him a number of times on location, but nonstop work makes things hectic. Early in his career, Robinson, whose parents are Owen and Gayle Robinson of Great Falls, filmed Wendy's commercials featuring Thomas, the company's late founder. And Robinson was working on Sept. 11, 2001, in Giants Stadium in New Jersey when two commercial airliners smashed into the World Trade Center's twin towers. In recent years, Robinson has shot a handful of episodes of the hit series, "Desperate Housewives." Robinson excels in the steadicam area, in which he carries heavy camera equipment around. Like the Hall of Fame baseball player, Robinson needs to be in shape. "He works out all the time," said Owen Robinson. In high school, Brooks Robinson was a talented kicker for the Bison football team in Great Falls. He redshirted at the University of Oregon, but never got his chance to be the Ducks' kicker. So he left Oregon for Montana State University in Bozeman, where his interest in films won out over place-kicking. Now he's in the thick of things in Hollywood. "I really enjoy the filmmaking stuff," Robinson said. Six-ton safe "I have an elephant in my garage at home," says Great Falls Police Lt. Bryan Lockerby. No, it's not a big gray animal with a trunk. It's a six-ton antique Mosler safe, manufactured in 1908. Lockerby inherited the safe when he bought the house a few years ago, and the owner couldn't take the safe with him. The door alone weighs about two tons. Someone painted the outside of the safe over the years, but portions of it are extremely ornate. It still works, and Lockerby has the combination for it. Lockerby said there's a similar safe on display at Central Lock & Key that reads, "Great Falls National Bank #6." Staff members there figured Lockerby's "elephant" is the No. 5 safe from the same bank. Great Falls National Bank downtown became Northwestern Bank in 1973, and today the building houses Wells Fargo bank. Lockerby wonders if anyone out there knows more about these monstrous bank safes. He would sell it, since he doesn't think he needs a huge safe sitting in his garage. But, as Lockerby points out, "eBay's a tough market since few people are willing to pay for the shipping of a six-ton safe." No kidding. The article is dated today...
