That’s true, she got arrested for driving under the influence. But if you look at her closer she doesn’t look at all like a bad girl, nor like the spoiled Marissa from the OC, the series that made her famous. And speaking about her look, so copied, she says: “To be honest I’m not sure I know what style really is…I just like fashion, that’s all…”

If you’re not 15 or you don’t read gossip tabloids, you vaguely recognize the girl here on the left but you’re not able to name one film where you remember seeing her, don’t worry. (WTF!!?) Mischa Barton, just like all the new starlet has become blunderly well known way before having a so-called international acting career.

I’m VERY tempted to stop now.

She earned most of her fame playing Marissa Cooper on the OC, an American TV series about rich teenagers from Orange County. Another part of her fame, maybe more important than the one achieved as an actress, comes from being known as universal style icon. In one word, this means that Mischa ranks every year the list of the most elegant women in the world, she poses for fashion photoshoots, she’s been attending for years the red carpets of the most famous Festivals in the world even without any movie to promote (but there’s an upcoming one: it’s called Assassination of a High School President and it will be released in August in the USA). Given that no fashion icon is worth their tag if they haven’t done something foolish, Mischa – just like her peers Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan – was arrested for driving under the influence back in December. Her mug shot made it to the web with the result that her fame grew even more. When I meet her, Mischa doesn't really give the impression of this ‘doomed girl’. She’s kind, much taller – very rare case – than she looks in her photos, with a very intense face, an ass that maybe doesn’t fit the Hollywood standards and an unbelievably deep voice, very dark and not chirping at all. We’re in Ginevra and she’s here to try on a series of jewels by Chopard, the Swiss brand she’s the ambassador for. Her mother Nuala – a beautiful Irish lady with the air of an ex-hippie – sits next to her and never takes her eyes off of Mischa.
You’re considered a style icon. What does this mean to you?
“I don’t know. To be honest I don’t even think I perfectly know what style is. I like fashion, but I’m not obsessed. I like mixing, looking for original and unique vintage clothes on street markets. If by style you mean this, then yes, I’ve got it.”
Do you draw your inspiration from anyone? Is there any female figure you’d love to look like?
“Among the contemporary ones, I’m not sure. I’m indeed charmed by some style icons from the ’60, women like Marianne FaithFull and Anita Pallenberg. I’d like to look like they did, I love that kind of rock spirit. I don’t like too elegant or sophisticated looks instead.”
The OC gained an amazing popularity. It dealt with some borderline stories…rich and troubled guys with alcoholic parents, drugs and car races. Was it an exaggeration or did it really mirror the reality?
“I’m sure there are young people like those of the OC, I’ve met some of them, even if I went to a non particularly exclusive school in Manhattan. The popularity of the series is due to the fact that the problems of the teens are eventually the same, in poor and rich schools, in Los Angeles like in New York.”
How has your life changed since you became famous?
“I had to take some measures, for example I’m more careful about the places where I go and I generally avoid going where I know there will be paparazzi. Even when I’m with my friends in some hangout, I try not to bring attention on me. I don’t want to be pictured like a crazy girl just because it’s not true, I’m really not that kind of girl.”
Do you think being famous implies a certain amount of responsibility towards the public? Above all towards teenage girls who choose you as role model?
“Of course. But this doesn’t mean you can avoid every mistake. Them, they can happen, the most important thing is how you face them.”
Are you perhaps referring to your DUI arrest?
“I don’t want to talk about that episode. I can only say that, as I already explained, everybody can make a mistake. It also happened to me. What is important is to not convey the idea that what I personally did is a cool thing, or a must-experience. It is not.”
Who’s the most important person in your life?
“My mother, without any doubt.”
