Smallville S9 S&S #36: With a movie event coming in 2010 everyone better tune in!

Welcome to the 36th Smallville
spoilers and speculation thread
Season Nine Description

Now in its nineth season, this modern reinterpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters continues to blend realism, adventure and emotion into an exciting action series. With realistic portrayals and award-winning, state-of-the-art special effects, SMALLVILLE stars Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper by the Dozen movies), Allison Mack (The Ant Bully, Opposite Sex), Erica Durance (House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2), Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, The West Wing, upcoming The Christmas Cottage), Cassidy Freeman (Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee, Cold Case), Sam Witwer (Battlestar Galatica) and Justin Hartley (Aquaman, Passions). From Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Smallville airs Fridays (8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on The CW.

This season, Clark Kent (Welling) moves closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become. Spending less time in his hometown and more time in the big city of Metropolis, Clark will encounter new challenges and new faces – both friend and foe – as he begins his career at the Daily Planet. Characters from every corner of the DC Comics universe will pay visits, including Plastique, the heroine-to-be with an explosive personality; Maxima, the seductive, intergalactic goddess; and Superman's most formidable adversary, Doomsday, the only character who is able to kill Superman. This season will also feature an appearance by DC Comics' time-traveling Legion of Superheroes, who return from the future in an episode to be penned by renowned comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Last season came to a stunning conclusion with a confrontation between Clark and his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor (former series star Michael Rosenbaum) under the frozen columns of Clark's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark's former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark's alien heritage. Clark's world soon came crashing down as the fortress crumbled in an icy avalanche, leaving both characters' fate a mystery.

Lex's moment of truth didn't come without a price. He murdered his father, Lionel (former series star John Glover) for information about the legendary Traveler. Clark also had to defeat Brainiac (recurring guest star James Marsters), who had banished Clark's Supergirl cousin Kara (recurring guest star Laura Vandervoort) to the Phantom Zone and attacked both Chloe (Mack) and Lana (former series star Kristin Kreuk), leaving them both in catatonic comas. Though Brainiac's demise ultimately lifted their trances, Chloe was soon arrested for hacking into federal databases – just as she was about to respond to a marriage proposal from Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore). Meanwhile, in a tearful, videotaped good-bye, Lana told Clark that she was leaving Smallville and his life forever, encouraging Clark to fulfill his destiny – something he wouldn't be able to accomplish with her in his world. While one chapter of his life seemingly came to an end, another was about to begin. With fewer commitments tethering Clark to the farm, Lois Lane (Durance) asked him to apply for a job opening at the Daily Planet.

Season eight begins a few weeks after the Fortress' icy collapse, as a LuthorCorp arctic excavation team investigates Lex's whereabouts. Members of the Justice League reunite in the search for Clark, who has been rendered powerless by the fall of the Fortress. As the season unfolds, Clark's new position at the Daily Planet will mean working across the desk from Lois. The two will be forced to team up to cover Metropolis' most pressing goings on. Sometimes it's Lois herself who becomes Clark's biggest obstacle, especially when he's on a deadline. But with Clark and Lois thrust into such close proximity, sparks are bound to fly, and feelings will start to surface that come as a surprise to both of them. At the same time, Clark begins to discover the balancing act he must perform as he explores his dual identities as both reporter and superhero.

Even with Lex gone, the Luthor mansion isn't vacant for long. Its newest resident is the beguiling Tess Mercer (Freeman), who, according to Lex's written instructions, has been placed in charge of LuthorCorp and all of its projects, including oversight of the Daily Planet. Tess proves to be as inscrutable as she is cunning, and is an enigmatic new presence in everyone's lives. It won't be long before Tess' attention turns to Clark. But Clark is wary of her intentions, and as the layers of her past are peeled away, new mysteries surface. Through it all, Tess' resolve remains unshakable – to find Lex Luthor, as she is convinced he is still alive.

Clark isn't the only one who will face formidable challenges. Oliver Queen (Hartley) returns to make Metropolis his home. He finds himself at a crossroads, forced to travel through some dark terrain – especially when demons from his past are reawakened. Oliver ultimately begins to question his role as a superhero, just as Clark is embracing his own.

With a new fiancé and puzzling new abilities that intrigue her as much as they frighten her, Chloe decides to turn her attention toward helping others. She takes over where Lana left off and reopens the Isis Foundation to provide counseling for those with meteor-powered abilities. She soon finds just how tricky the meteor-powered can be. Chloe's life is further complicated when she meets Metropolis paramedic Davis Bloome (Witwer). A tireless public servant, Bloome strikes up a fast friendship with Chloe. Soulful and mysterious, Bloome has demons of his own. He's troubled by large gaps of time that he can't remember, and as he comes closer to the answers, he must confront his own worst fear – that at his core he is pure evil.

The series, based on DC Comics characters, was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (both of Spider-Man, Shanghai Noon movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and is executive produced by Kelly Souders (Stuck) & Brian Peterson (But I'm a Cheerleader), Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer (both of Control, Natural Selection), Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (latter three from One Tree Hill, The Bronx Is Burning, Norbit, Wild Hogs). This description was copied and pasted from KryptonSite.com. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Episode Guide

Episode 9.08: Idol
Airdate: November 13, 2009

* 08/02 - Two guests from the DC Universe will appear in this episode. Source: KryptonSite
* UPDATED 8/17/09: Lois meets her psychatrist, "Dr. Evans," and tells her there are things she wants to talk about off the record.
- Dr. Evans asks Lois to describe these dreams, and Lois tells her that they start off with "serious NC-17 violence" and then there's a recurring event - involving clothes coming off. "Lots of... naked... skin. Skin on skin."
- Dr. Evans asks if these dreams are about Clark and Lois gets defensive and says that yes, she's doing the "virtual kama sutra" with Clark Kent, and refers to her desk as "soft-core central."
- Dr. Evans suggests that Lois's dream may have something to do with wanting to uncover something that's hidden within Clark. Lois admits she does feel like he is hiding something, and that the closer she gets to him, the more she feels like Clark is going to disappear.
- "The Red-Blue Blur" calls while Lois is talking with Dr. Evans. The ring tone is "Holding Out For A Hero" (though of course this could change). Lois sends him to voice mail. Apparently the last time Lois opened up to the RBB, he vanished into thin air. The doctor suggests she still has feelings for this "mysterious caller," but Lois insists that he's history like "eight-track tapes" and "rotary phones."
- Chloe by this point knows that Clark has been calling Lois as "The Blur." She is there with him on the other side of the line. There is a reference made to "what happened with Corbin" from "Metallo."
- Chloe tells Clark he's going to need a better disguise.
- Something happens at one point that makes Lois think Clark is the Blur. The Blur does eventually reach her by the phone, however.
- Also in this episode it is Clark, not the Blur, who saves Lois from danger out on a ledge. There's a scene (possibly around the same moment?) where Lois wants to confess her feelings for him, and Clark looks deeply into her eyes, though it's unknown if they actually say anything.
- Dr. Evans tells Lois that there will be a time when she will have to choose between the Blur and Clark.
- Zan and Jayna may be transforming themselves into a black panther... and a sheet of ice.
- The Metropolis D.A., Ray Sacks, holds a televised press conference urging the Blur to "step out of the shadows." He invites Clark to show himself and take responsibility for his actions" at a public press conference and derides his work as "vigilante behavior."
- Later at the press conference, the Blur doesn't show... but Lois does... announcing that she knows the Blur. She then has a monologue about how and why the Blur can't come out and make his presence known, and that he needs to be what we all need - a symbol to believe in, and a light in the darkness.
- This episode will have a very "V For Vendetta" moment within.

UPDATED 8/14/09: Provided that these are indeed the "Wonder Twins"... "Zan" will be played by David Gallagher of 7th Heaven fame; "Jayna" will be Allison Scagliotti who was recently seen on Warehouse 13.

Episode 9.09: Pandora
Airdate: November 20,2009
BACK TO THE FUTURE — Tess (Cassidy Freeman) kidnaps Lois (Erica Durance) to find out where Lois went after she disappeared for weeks. Lois's memory of the future depicts a Metropolis under Zod's (Callum Blue) rule and Clark (Tom Welling) powerless under the red sun, while Chloe (Allison Mack) forms a resistance group with Oliver (Justin Hartley). After learning of these future events, Clark makes an important decision about Zod. Posted on KryptonSite. Morgan Beggs directed the episode written by Drew Landis & Julia Swift

Episode 9.10: Disciple
Airdate: Jan 2010
UPDATED 10/11/09: The character of Mia Dearden (Speedy) makes a return appearance in this episode.
- The "Dark Archer" is an old mentor of Oliver's from a Celtic cult of assassins.
- Oliver gets a new Green Arrow costume by this point.

UPDATED 10/7/09: New spoiler from Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello: "Oliver will meet the bad guy version of the Green Arrow (a.k.a. the Dark Archer) in episode 10." Dark Archer? "jason1040" over on Twitter says it's likely Merlyn, a black clad archer who often causes trouble for Oliver Queen.

Episode 9.11 & 9.12:Smallville: Absolute Justice
Aka Society (p1 & p2)
Airdate: Feb 5 2010

UPDATED 11/11/09: Michael Ausiello of EW.com has revealed that the Justice Society 2-parter will now air as a two-hour movie on January 29, 2010.

UPDATED 10/30/09: New Hawkman spoilers from Michael Shanks at the Huffington Post:
- "Hawkman being the alpha in the Justice Society, being someone who...has made some missteps along the way, can or could represent a type of mentor character to Clark in his leadership abilities with his burgeoning team members of the Justice League. He represents a character that has a lot of wisdom to pass down to this next generation, so there is a strong possibility that once the initial phase wears off that there will be a coming together of those two to paint a larger portrait of the future, of what Clark has available to him and what his options are," he says.
- About Doctor Fate: "There's a really neat relationship between he and Hawkman that makes the first episode quite heart-wrenching. There are aspects of it that are heart-wrenching as a result of that relationship. And I thought that was a very cool aspect of the first episode."
- The character will fly, and he does have a mace. And yes, there are wings.
- The version of Carter Hall we'll be seeing here is an archaelogist, not "Thanagarian space cop."

UPDATED 10/26/09: Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Phil Morris will be appearing in "Society" as the Martian Manhunter.

UPDATED 11/9/09: Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has revealed that Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) will be appearing in this and several other episodes as Amanda Waller. Waller is a major player in the comics and is frequently associated with the organizations Checkmate and the Suicide Squad.

UPDATED 10/23/09: All of the series' regular cast except for Callum Blue (Zod) appears in this episode.

Exclusive: 'Smallville' movie gets a title!
It’s official: Smallville’s upcoming two-hour Justice Society-centric “movie” is now an actual movie.
Sources confirm to me exclusively that The CW has jettisoned the separate titles that were initially assigned to each of the two episodes — “Society” and “Legends,” respectively — in favor of the singularly sensational (and far more marketable) Smallville: Absolute Justice.
What’s more, I hear the movie — which marks the debut of Michael Shanks as Hawkman (pictured) — will air as a seamless two-hour event with only one set of credits.
By the way, the air date for Smallville: Absolute Justice was recently changed from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5. Adjust your schedules accordingly.

General Spoilers

Question: The Smallville trailer that was screened at Comic-Con appears to show Lois and Clark having sex. Are appearances deceiving? —Antonio
Ausiello: Sort of. “It’s more than just sex,” counters exec producer Brian Peterson. “They’re making love. Clark would never [just have sex].” Hope that clears up any confusion!

# new 08/09 - Smallville producers are backing down from earlier claims that the coming season would be one of the show's darkest yet. Last month, co-showrunner Brian Peterson told me that the theme of season 9 would be "Clark's darkest hour." Faster than a speeding bullet, Smallville diehards started to revolt. "Superman fans don't do dark," harrumphed one fan, Cathy, in the comments section. "The last movie was dark and it tanked." Added another fan with the handle Captain Obvious: "Nobody watches a TV show to become depressed." Well, everyone can simma down na because Peterson says season 9 won't be all doom and gloom. "We might've misled people a little bit with that," he confesses. "Clark has some very dark decisions to make and he starts the season in a very dark place, but the season itself won't be dark. "In fact," Peterson continues, "Clark and Lois will be back in each other's orbits and there will be a lot of the fun that we had last year-even more than we had last year." Case in point: In episode three, Lois and Clark are "in the trenches fighting zombies," Peterson reveals. "And when they catch their breath from fighting zombies, [romantic] sparks will fly." [...] There are no immediate plans for Michael Rosenbaum to return to Smallville, but Lex's presence will continue to be felt. "I wouldn't rule out him coming back," [Network president Dawn Ostroff] says. "But I don't know if it'll happen this season." Source: The Ausiello Files

# 08/03 - Tess Mercer is going to be in some big trouble when the new season of Smallville kicks off. In the season-nine promo shown at Comic-Con, Tess is fighting with Major Zod himself. Cassidy exclusively tells us, "We start out heavy. In the first episode, we start out really going at it, and it's really fun." So is Tess biting off more than she can chew this season on Smallville? "She has to figure out whether she's screwed the pooch or whether she's doing a good thing. She hasn't figured it out yet, but she absolutely will," says Cassidy.

Interview With Tom Welling September 8/09
TV Guide Magazine | Smallville | Tom Welling Feels Super About Season 9

Question: Any details on what brings Zatanna back to Smallville? —Jeffrey
Ausiello: I hear she’s going to stir up some love-triangle drama between Lois and Clark. The episode’s called “Warrior” and, as I scooped in the latest episode of Ausiello TV, it’s the one set at San Diego Comic-Con Metropolis Wonder-Con. In other Smallville news, Tom Welling’s practically naked — and he’s making out with Lois!

Question: Any hints about the new love interest for Chloe on Smallville? —Sandra
Ausiello: She meets him at San Diego Comic-Con Metropolis Wonder-Con.

Yes, but Lois is from the present in that clip.

but I have a question... this clip is present Lois having a flash of when she went to the future, correct? So when Clark says "I died when you left"... I'm confused... where did she go?

She went to the furure, a year later (I think). But for the past Clark she has been gone a year. The "past" Clark didnt see her for year when she showed up. Does that make sense? Time travel can be confusing. So the Lois you see is from "the past or present" and Clark is a year from the first episode of the season. I also found it intresting that Clark didnt want to have to do anything with Chloe because Lois was gone but then Lois came back and Clark and Chloe are mending their frienship so allready there is that difference. I just cant believe there wont be any episodes for 2 freakin months!!!!!

I didn't think it was interesting, I thought it was a plot device and insult to all the people who value the Clark and Chloe friendship.
