Smallville S9 S&S #35: Because Clark may not wear the cape, but he is already Superman in our eyes.

Welcome to the 35th Smallville
spoilers and speculation thread
Season Nine Description

Now in its nineth season, this modern reinterpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters continues to blend realism, adventure and emotion into an exciting action series. With realistic portrayals and award-winning, state-of-the-art special effects, SMALLVILLE stars Tom Welling (The Fog, Cheaper by the Dozen movies), Allison Mack (The Ant Bully, Opposite Sex), Erica Durance (House of the Dead, The Butterfly Effect 2), Aaron Ashmore (Veronica Mars, The West Wing, upcoming The Christmas Cottage), Cassidy Freeman (Finishing the Game: The Search for a New Bruce Lee, Cold Case), Sam Witwer (Battlestar Galatica) and Justin Hartley (Aquaman, Passions). From Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Smallville airs Fridays (8:00–9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on The CW.

This season, Clark Kent (Welling) moves closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become. Spending less time in his hometown and more time in the big city of Metropolis, Clark will encounter new challenges and new faces – both friend and foe – as he begins his career at the Daily Planet. Characters from every corner of the DC Comics universe will pay visits, including Plastique, the heroine-to-be with an explosive personality; Maxima, the seductive, intergalactic goddess; and Superman's most formidable adversary, Doomsday, the only character who is able to kill Superman. This season will also feature an appearance by DC Comics' time-traveling Legion of Superheroes, who return from the future in an episode to be penned by renowned comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Last season came to a stunning conclusion with a confrontation between Clark and his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor (former series star Michael Rosenbaum) under the frozen columns of Clark's arctic Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark's former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark's alien heritage. Clark's world soon came crashing down as the fortress crumbled in an icy avalanche, leaving both characters' fate a mystery.

Lex's moment of truth didn't come without a price. He murdered his father, Lionel (former series star John Glover) for information about the legendary Traveler. Clark also had to defeat Brainiac (recurring guest star James Marsters), who had banished Clark's Supergirl cousin Kara (recurring guest star Laura Vandervoort) to the Phantom Zone and attacked both Chloe (Mack) and Lana (former series star Kristin Kreuk), leaving them both in catatonic comas. Though Brainiac's demise ultimately lifted their trances, Chloe was soon arrested for hacking into federal databases – just as she was about to respond to a marriage proposal from Jimmy Olsen (Ashmore). Meanwhile, in a tearful, videotaped good-bye, Lana told Clark that she was leaving Smallville and his life forever, encouraging Clark to fulfill his destiny – something he wouldn't be able to accomplish with her in his world. While one chapter of his life seemingly came to an end, another was about to begin. With fewer commitments tethering Clark to the farm, Lois Lane (Durance) asked him to apply for a job opening at the Daily Planet.

Season eight begins a few weeks after the Fortress' icy collapse, as a LuthorCorp arctic excavation team investigates Lex's whereabouts. Members of the Justice League reunite in the search for Clark, who has been rendered powerless by the fall of the Fortress. As the season unfolds, Clark's new position at the Daily Planet will mean working across the desk from Lois. The two will be forced to team up to cover Metropolis' most pressing goings on. Sometimes it's Lois herself who becomes Clark's biggest obstacle, especially when he's on a deadline. But with Clark and Lois thrust into such close proximity, sparks are bound to fly, and feelings will start to surface that come as a surprise to both of them. At the same time, Clark begins to discover the balancing act he must perform as he explores his dual identities as both reporter and superhero.

Even with Lex gone, the Luthor mansion isn't vacant for long. Its newest resident is the beguiling Tess Mercer (Freeman), who, according to Lex's written instructions, has been placed in charge of LuthorCorp and all of its projects, including oversight of the Daily Planet. Tess proves to be as inscrutable as she is cunning, and is an enigmatic new presence in everyone's lives. It won't be long before Tess' attention turns to Clark. But Clark is wary of her intentions, and as the layers of her past are peeled away, new mysteries surface. Through it all, Tess' resolve remains unshakable – to find Lex Luthor, as she is convinced he is still alive.

Clark isn't the only one who will face formidable challenges. Oliver Queen (Hartley) returns to make Metropolis his home. He finds himself at a crossroads, forced to travel through some dark terrain – especially when demons from his past are reawakened. Oliver ultimately begins to question his role as a superhero, just as Clark is embracing his own.

With a new fiancé and puzzling new abilities that intrigue her as much as they frighten her, Chloe decides to turn her attention toward helping others. She takes over where Lana left off and reopens the Isis Foundation to provide counseling for those with meteor-powered abilities. She soon finds just how tricky the meteor-powered can be. Chloe's life is further complicated when she meets Metropolis paramedic Davis Bloome (Witwer). A tireless public servant, Bloome strikes up a fast friendship with Chloe. Soulful and mysterious, Bloome has demons of his own. He's troubled by large gaps of time that he can't remember, and as he comes closer to the answers, he must confront his own worst fear – that at his core he is pure evil.

The series, based on DC Comics characters, was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (both of Spider-Man, Shanghai Noon movies, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and is executive produced by Kelly Souders (Stuck) & Brian Peterson (But I'm a Cheerleader), Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer (both of Control, Natural Selection), Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola (latter three from One Tree Hill, The Bronx Is Burning, Norbit, Wild Hogs). This description was copied and pasted from KryptonSite.com. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Airdate: September 25, 2009

* 07/24 - Actress Sharon Taylor ("Amelia Banks" of Stargate: Atlantis) has booked a recurring role in Smallville Season 9. We're assuming the role she will be playing will be "Fiona." [...] Another female soldier who is described as "sexy and hot" is "Fiona." She wears a faded military jacket and turns against her leader. Together with another soldier named "Basqat" she imprisons her leader. This role may recur too. [...] Monique Ganderton, an actress who has also served on Smallville as Cassidy Freeman's stunt double, has apparently been cast in the role of "Alia." As previously revealed, Alia is a "beautiful, sexy femme fatale assassin with mysteriously intimate ties to Clark and Krypton." Dr. Emil Hamilton appears and shares a scene with Chloe. Lois returns from wherever she disappeared to in "Doomsday." Clark takes on a new approach to fighting crime in Metropolis. Source: KryptonSite
* 06/21 - Brian Austin Green has been cast on Smallville as the DC Comics villain Metallo. * UPDATED 8/6/09: Executive Producer Brian Peterson tells Entertainment Weekly that in episode 3, Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling) are "in the trenches fighting zombies, and when they catch their breath from fighting, [romantic] sparks will fly."

* UPDATED 8/3/09: "Rabid" is about a virus infecting Metropolis that turns people into zombies.
- Both Tess and Lois are infected by the plague.
- Cameron Bancroft, whose previous credits include 24 and the original Beverly Hills 90210, plays Dr. Coats, a virologist who is working on the zombie plague.

Episode 9.04: Echo
Airdate: October 16, 2009

* 08/02 - Oliver ends up at a seedy club in Havana with two women in tow, and later ends up being chased by a large drug kingpin. He ends up having to be saved by one of his on-again, off-again associates and romantic partners. Meanwhile, Clark wears a tuxedo and a bow tie to gain entrance into the Ace of Clubs and goes by the nickname "Kennair." His "date" to the AoC? Lois in an elegant cocktail dress. Lois and Clark go to Metropolis General to interview a man who was held hostage, but it seems it may be a false lead. This still causes Clark's "reporter instincts" to get "kicked into high gear." Lois and Clark also interview a female hostage. It seems that Clark might get a new power to hear others' thoughts in this situation, hence the title. Source: KryptonSite

Episode 9.05: Roulette
Airdate: October 30, 2009

* 08/02 - DC Comics character "Roulette" appears in this episode, and a dollar says that's also the episode title, but we cannot confirm that last part.
* 8/22/09: Lois learns of a secret Clark has been keeping about Oliver. Source: KryptonSite

Episode 9.06: Crossfire
Airdate: October 30,2009

UPDATED 8/25/09: Clark joins Lois on an audition for a for a television show called "Good Morning, Metropolis" on WGBS. Clark is very reluctant to do this, but insists he is only doing it for her.
- At one point Lois brings up the fact that Clark stood her up on their one and only date. (In "Infamous")
- Lois ends up getting the role as host of the show, but under one condition - she is also joined by Clark. The producer says they have chemistry, like "Hepburn and Tracy, Bogie and Bacall, and Regis and Kelly."
- A marketing ad featuring Clark and Lois is quickly presented to an already-uneasy Clark.
- The show sends Clark out on a date that is being watched by a producer and Lois in a control room. Lois is speaking to Clark throughout the date on an earphone. She teases Clark about the fact that in his profile, he admits that he "grew up on a farm" will get him nothing but a date with a country mouse or a cougar looking for her next meal.
- Clark's date is with "Catherine," a 24 year old blonde beauty whose appearance leaves Lois a bit on the shocked side. Lois decides she wants to make Clark just as jealous as she is, and is determined to top this date
- Later Lois has a date where Clark is speaking to HER over an earwig. At one point Clark says "The last thing you need is a drink, Lois." (AGAIN with the drunk Lois stuff... sigh.)
- After it's all done, Clark tells Lois that her date was a lucky man. Lois smiles, glad that she seems to have made him jealous.
- There's a scene between Clark and Chloe where they talk about the release form for the show, but we don't know many details on that.
- There is a scene between Tess and Zod in the mansion. Zod has one of his people posing as a guard in his mansion, and tells him to make Tess reveal who the Blur is, or kill her.
- Oliver's storyline involves him meeting Mia Dearden, and yes, this speedy girl wears lots of red and yellow. She's also a hooker, working for a tattooed pimp named Rick, who doesn't sound like a very pleasant character. At some point Mia takes Ollie for a quick spin in his Lamorghini, at which point he teasingly calls her "Speedy." Later, Oliver reveals the real reason he is there - he knows of her from an earlier encounter, and he wants to be able to help her. It sounds like redeeming Mia may be Oliver's chance to redeem himself.
- Lois and Oliver meet briefly at the Ace of Clubs.

-The kiss between Lois and Clark (in Crossfire) is the first time where it is mutually reciprocated and takes place in real time without any altering time or drug device. This moment, at the end of ep 'Crossfire', sets up Lois's departure in the next ep 'Kandor' and then her return in 'Idol'. However an ominous discovery about Lois's futuristic time flashes leads to a changing revelation!"
(credit: Patty -- IMDB)

Episode 9.07: Kandor
Airdate: November 6,2009
- Lois (Erica Durance) does not appear in this episode
JOR-EL APPEARS IN SMALLVILLE — Jor-El (guest star Julian Sands) mysteriously arrives at the Kent farm searching for his son, Kal-El, but meets Chloe (Allison Mack) instead. Convinced the Blur is Jor-El, Zod (Callum Blue) enlists Tess’s (Cassidy Freeman) help in finding him to force him to reveal the secret to his powers. Clark (Tom Welling) realizes Jor-El is alive and on Earth and races to find him before Zod does.

Episode 9.08: Idol
Airdate: November 13, 2009

* 08/02 - Two guests from the DC Universe will appear in this episode. Source: KryptonSite
* UPDATED 8/17/09: Lois meets her psychatrist, "Dr. Evans," and tells her there are things she wants to talk about off the record.
- Dr. Evans asks Lois to describe these dreams, and Lois tells her that they start off with "serious NC-17 violence" and then there's a recurring event - involving clothes coming off. "Lots of... naked... skin. Skin on skin."
- Dr. Evans asks if these dreams are about Clark and Lois gets defensive and says that yes, she's doing the "virtual kama sutra" with Clark Kent, and refers to her desk as "soft-core central."
- Dr. Evans suggests that Lois's dream may have something to do with wanting to uncover something that's hidden within Clark. Lois admits she does feel like he is hiding something, and that the closer she gets to him, the more she feels like Clark is going to disappear.
- "The Red-Blue Blur" calls while Lois is talking with Dr. Evans. The ring tone is "Holding Out For A Hero" (though of course this could change). Lois sends him to voice mail. Apparently the last time Lois opened up to the RBB, he vanished into thin air. The doctor suggests she still has feelings for this "mysterious caller," but Lois insists that he's history like "eight-track tapes" and "rotary phones."
- Chloe by this point knows that Clark has been calling Lois as "The Blur." She is there with him on the other side of the line. There is a reference made to "what happened with Corbin" from "Metallo."
- Chloe tells Clark he's going to need a better disguise.
- Something happens at one point that makes Lois think Clark is the Blur. The Blur does eventually reach her by the phone, however.
- Also in this episode it is Clark, not the Blur, who saves Lois from danger out on a ledge. There's a scene (possibly around the same moment?) where Lois wants to confess her feelings for him, and Clark looks deeply into her eyes, though it's unknown if they actually say anything.
- Dr. Evans tells Lois that there will be a time when she will have to choose between the Blur and Clark.
- Zan and Jayna may be transforming themselves into a black panther... and a sheet of ice.
- The Metropolis D.A., Ray Sacks, holds a televised press conference urging the Blur to "step out of the shadows." He invites Clark to show himself and take responsibility for his actions" at a public press conference and derides his work as "vigilante behavior."
- Later at the press conference, the Blur doesn't show... but Lois does... announcing that she knows the Blur. She then has a monologue about how and why the Blur can't come out and make his presence known, and that he needs to be what we all need - a symbol to believe in, and a light in the darkness.
- This episode will have a very "V For Vendetta" moment within.

UPDATED 8/14/09: Provided that these are indeed the "Wonder Twins"... "Zan" will be played by David Gallagher of 7th Heaven fame; "Jayna" will be Allison Scagliotti who was recently seen on Warehouse 13.

Episode 9.09: Pandora
Airdate: November 20,2009
BACK TO THE FUTURE — Tess (Cassidy Freeman) kidnaps Lois (Erica Durance) to find out where Lois went after she disappeared for weeks. Lois's memory of the future depicts a Metropolis under Zod's (Callum Blue) rule and Clark (Tom Welling) powerless under the red sun, while Chloe (Allison Mack) forms a resistance group with Oliver (Justin Hartley). After learning of these future events, Clark makes an important decision about Zod. Posted on KryptonSite. Morgan Beggs directed the episode written by Drew Landis & Julia Swift

General Spoilers

Question: The Smallville trailer that was screened at Comic-Con appears to show Lois and Clark having sex. Are appearances deceiving? —Antonio
Ausiello: Sort of. “It’s more than just sex,” counters exec producer Brian Peterson. “They’re making love. Clark would never [just have sex].” Hope that clears up any confusion!

# new 08/09 - Smallville producers are backing down from earlier claims that the coming season would be one of the show's darkest yet. Last month, co-showrunner Brian Peterson told me that the theme of season 9 would be "Clark's darkest hour." Faster than a speeding bullet, Smallville diehards started to revolt. "Superman fans don't do dark," harrumphed one fan, Cathy, in the comments section. "The last movie was dark and it tanked." Added another fan with the handle Captain Obvious: "Nobody watches a TV show to become depressed." Well, everyone can simma down na because Peterson says season 9 won't be all doom and gloom. "We might've misled people a little bit with that," he confesses. "Clark has some very dark decisions to make and he starts the season in a very dark place, but the season itself won't be dark. "In fact," Peterson continues, "Clark and Lois will be back in each other's orbits and there will be a lot of the fun that we had last year-even more than we had last year." Case in point: In episode three, Lois and Clark are "in the trenches fighting zombies," Peterson reveals. "And when they catch their breath from fighting zombies, [romantic] sparks will fly." [...] There are no immediate plans for Michael Rosenbaum to return to Smallville, but Lex's presence will continue to be felt. "I wouldn't rule out him coming back," [Network president Dawn Ostroff] says. "But I don't know if it'll happen this season." Source: The Ausiello Files

# 08/03 - Tess Mercer is going to be in some big trouble when the new season of Smallville kicks off. In the season-nine promo shown at Comic-Con, Tess is fighting with Major Zod himself. Cassidy exclusively tells us, "We start out heavy. In the first episode, we start out really going at it, and it's really fun." So is Tess biting off more than she can chew this season on Smallville? "She has to figure out whether she's screwed the pooch or whether she's doing a good thing. She hasn't figured it out yet, but she absolutely will," says Cassidy.

Question: Ever since the news of Callum Blue being cast as Zod on Smallville was reported, there is one question we are all dying to know: Was the "Mason" role, in fact, Zod? --C.B.
Ausiello: Yep, it sure was. Speaking of which, Justin Hartley doesn't think a Green Arrow-Zod face-off is in the cards next season. "I have the good sense in my head to let Clark deal with [him]," he says with a laugh. "I'll stick to dealing with the ladies. Why would I start something with that guy? That guy looks tall in photos. I don't need a piece of that guy."

Question: Could you kindly tell us Smallville fans what Season 9 will be about? --Colin
Ausiello: According to Justin Hartley, a portion of it will be about Oliver confronting his demons. "I think he is going to struggle with the things he has been afforded [as a result of] his powers," he says. "He has sacrificed things and done things that haunt him… It's bad stuff. We need to get to the bottom of it."

Michelle in the United Kingdom: Any Smallville season-nine news?
Green Arrow himself, aka Justin Hartley, tells us, "I heard Oliver's going to start drinking again. He'd better be a funny drunk. Who wants an angry drunk around?"[/indent]

Kneel Before Blue: Callum Blue Is Zod
British actor Callum Blue of Dead Like Me and Related fame has been cast in the role of Zod in Season 9, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed.

Blue's other credits include Secret Diary of a Call Girl and The Tudors.

TV Guide is reporting that Callum Blue will make his first appearance in the season premiere, and he will be a series regular.

Whether or not Zod happens to also be "Mason" remains to be seen. Unfortunately, this seems to confirm that Sam Witwer will not be returning to Smallville.

TV Guide has revealed that Beverly Hills 90210 and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles alum Brian Austin Green has been cast in "at least the first two episodes of Season 9" as Superman comics villain "Metallo." In this version of the story, Metallo's alter ego of John Corben will be a journalist for the Daily Planet.

Are Tess and Oliver going to be hooking up this season on Smallville? — Kaitlyn
ADAM: Don't look to see them getting BIZ-AY on screen any time soon. For what it's worth, Cassidy Freeman shares your disappointment. "Tess is a sex goddess, but she never gets a love scene," Freeman tells us. "She's a temptress, but she's kind of a prude."
