Kind of figured they were aiming on going there.

Ausiello: I’m glad we held onto your email for six months, because it finally bore fruit. In Season 16, “Torres and Bishop sort of… become close,” co-showrunner Frank Cardea shares with a wink. And while the show isn’t going there just yet, “We’re glancing in that direction,” the EP affirms. After all, “If you go back in NCIS history, the ‘Tiva’ thing took many years to develop.” Believe us, we know.

NCIS
Season 16 opens just a day or two after Vance’s abduction, but following the title sequence jumps ahead four weeks, where Gibbs, filling in as director, “is in a position of authority that he doesn’t feel comfortable with,” says co-showrunner Frank Cardea. In fact, that added burden will eventually tee up an episode the producers are very excited about, in which “Gibbs decides to take a little R&R at his favorite cabin in the middle of nowhere,” only to get unexpected guests in the form of Fornell and Captain Phillip Brooks (returning guest star Don Lake) — “and they drive him crazy,” reports EP Steven Binder. Other early outings include a whimsical “mystery on Wisteria Lane” (as they call it), followed by an episode that “explores what happens when NCIS meets reality-TV” (and in doing so reveals which agent is surprisingly fluent in the TV genre). Then, in Episode 6, when Ducky seeks to return to autopsy on a full-time basis (alongside a more confident Jimmy Palmer), “We’ll see how that works, with two chefs in the kitchen!” says Cardea.

BONUS SPOILER!: “It’s been a while since we’ve done anything with Gibbs’ ex-wives,” Cardea notes. “Those episodes always pop, so we may be seeing more of them.”

RETURN DATE: Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c (CBS)

Question: Can NCIS fans hope to hear more of Gibbs’ rules? In these last few seasons, they seem to have faded away. —Jenny
Ausiello: “That’s always a possibility,” said EP Steven Binder, when Matt Mitovich hand-delivered your question. “We have two new writers on staff and usually our new writers are the ones who like to create a new rule, so I wouldn’t be surprised.” As he explained, “The rules create themselves, to fit a need in the story.”

Question: More NCIS scoop, please! —Marcie
Ausiello: If the season premiere left you thinking you missed out on forensic whiz Kasie’s formal addition to the NCIS team, fear not — that moment hasn’t happened, yet. “For the first couple episodes, she’s there on a temporary basis,” says showrunner Frank Cardea. “It isn’t until, like, Episode 5 that she officially becomes the new forensic scientist.” Surveying Diona Reasonover’s promotion to series regular in the wake of series vet Pauley Perrette’s send-off, the EP notes, “Both on- and off- camera, she already fits like an old shoe.”

Is anyone leaving NCIS this season? –Carolyn
It may depend on what comes of this development: Sources tell me that midway through the season, the Secretary of Defense will be out for blood upon learning that Gibbs’ team defied his wishes, breaking the law in the process. As a result, the D.C. team may land under the microscope, much as their Los Angeles- and New Orleans-based brethren have.

Any news on NCIS‘ Bishop and Torres? I’m surprised at how much I like their interactions. —Michael
In the CBS drama’s Christmas episode (airing Dec. 11), Torres and Bishop will be parents to a newborn! Or at least pretend to be. (The baby is discovered when they go to arrest a suspect and the tot has zero identification or ties to any family. The agents thus decide to watch the baby overnight in hopes they can find a parent as they work to solve the case.)

Anything on NCIS? — Nitza
As shared on the Twitter by Wilmer Valderrama, Robert Wagner Jr. is back on set for his annual visit. So what is Tony’s pop up to this time? I have learned that when Jimmy Palmer’s father-in-law is connected to a murder case, NCIS’ investigation uncovers that Sr. plays poker with said father-in-law — which is something that Jimmy did not know.
