Sam is (was) Professor Annalise Keating's cheating husband. Laurel/Wes/Michaela/Connor/Rebecca have been seen burying his body in all of the flash forwards and in the last episode we saw that Wes was the one who killed him.

He's also the main suspect in the murder of Lila.

That makes the most sense as we never had a definitive confirmation on her killer, that and we'll probably get the coverup/investigation into Sam's 'disappearance' of the story.
