The Historic take on Home and Away Home and Away began in January 1988, created by Channel Seven to replace Neighbours which the station had handed over to Network Ten. Twenty years on and 4560 episodes later Home and Away has captured the hearts of many Australians and overseas fans who have been watching the show since the day it was born. The production was created by the head of drama at Channel Seven Alan Bateman who wanted to create a soap after seeing how popular they were amongst a teenage audience. His idea sprang from a story about some country locals complaining about a foster home which was being built in their town. Home and Away was initially centred around Pippa, played by Vanessa Downing, and Tom Fletcher, played by Roger Oakley, the two foster parents unable to have children of their own. They bought the rundown Summer Bay caravan park from Alf Stewart, played by Ray Meagher, and moved in with their five foster children. The Australian soap took a bit of time to build in popularity starting out with very low ratings. Seven decided not to pull the soap and give it time to find an audience, and twenty years on Home and Away has found its way in to the lives of a large audience both in Australia, NZ the UK, Ireland and over 130 countries around the world. The show has seen many actors come and go, however there have been two actors who have been their since day one - Ray Meagher who plays Alf Stewart and Kate Richie who plays Sally Fletcher. Recently Kate Ritchie left the cast members to further her career outside of the Summer Bay set. Kate started with Home and Away at the age of eight, her fans watching her for 20 years as she matured in to a beautiful woman on and off the screen. Home and Away has had a string of actors who have gone on to bigger and better things. Melissa George who played Angel Brooks has moved onto Hollywood, starring in Alias for a season. Chris Egan who played Nick Smith has also moved on to movies and mini-series, starring in Empire, Vanished, and Eragon. Tammin Sursok who played Dani Sutherland has moved to the States to pursue her singing career, and Dannii Minogue has also made her name as a singer. The recently passed Heath Ledger, who was an enormous success in Hollywood, appeared on Home and Away as a young, aspiring actor. "People come and go on Home and Away but the show has a life of it's own."
