Ash has being annoying me over Luc. Like he had the baby for two seconds, a doctor conveniently comes along to give advice, and then he's going off about Irene not picking up that she was sick? Would he have done any different had he been at home with the baby.. at least until that point?

There was a point that VJ wasn't coping, but the things he was going off about.. just picking and choosing different things as reasons why she should go with him.
And also he just completely disregarded Kat's feelings about raising her. And then he went on about how she wouldn't have to do anything, but then he expected she would.
And I just feel so bad for VJ, because he still wanted her, and I think things were getting better.

I guess he is being a bit overprotective, and doesn't think anyone else is doing right by her.

The smoke from the fire brought her the cancer that she had, which progressed quickly.

I must have missed an episode, why are Leah and Irene at each other's throats?

The show might have answered this by now, but Irene got worried that if Ash got custody, she wouldn't be allowed to see the baby, and she didn't think VJ would get her, so she put herself into the custody battle, and Leah is mad at her for not having their backs and going for custody.
