Exclusive: 'Gotham' Almost Had a Very Different Alfred Gotham fans have had the chance to fall in love with Alfred Pennyworth all over again, as Sean Pertwee has brought the character to life in such a unique way, often being celebrated as one of the best parts of the show. While Pertwee has now become synonymous with Batman's beloved butler/caregiver, the character could have looked a lot different. Michael Cerveris, who just debuted on Gotham as the terrifying Professor Pyg, was in the running to portray Alfred when the initial pilot was being filmed. Following his first Gotham episode this past Thursday, Cerveris took some time to speak with ComicBook.com about his current role. When we asked about the audition process for the character, the Tony-winning actor revealed that he's been up for several roles on Gotham over the years, including the iconic butler. "I actually have auditioned for Gotham a number of times over the years," Cerveris told us. "The very fist time being, I auditioned on for the pilot of Gotham for the role of Alfred which, you know, thank god they had the sense to cast [Sean Pertwee] because he's brilliant in the part and there couldn't have been anybody else to do it." Let's be honest, there likely aren't any Gotham fans out there arguing with that point. Cerveris went on to say that his friendship with Gotham executive producer and director Danny Cannon has led to multiple auditions. Most recently, he went out for the role of the Arkham Asylum Warden, which ultimately went to Damian Young. Despite the fact that getting passed on for roles is disappointing, Cerveris said that he couldn't have been happier with his eventual part as Professor Pyg. "With Professor Pyg, I really feel like this is the only role I should ever have played on Gotham and did the stars align the way they were supposed to," the actor said. It's safe to say that all Gotham fans are now happy with the way everything turned out. Pertwee was perfect for Alfred, and Cerveris is stealing the show with his eerily fantastic take on Professor Pyg. Professor Pyg continues his dark reign of terror on Gotham in this week's episode, "A Dark Knight: A Day in the Narrows," which will air on Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Gotham's Michael Cerveris Explains How His Professor Pyg Is Different Than the Comics Gotham has introduced a horde of fan-favorite comic book villains over the course of the last season or two, including the likes of both Scarecrow and Solomon Grundy. Last week, the Batman prequel series turned the creep factor up to ten, bringing one on of Grant Morrison's most twisted creations, Professor Pyg. Played by two-time Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris, Pyg brought a level of terrifying pizzazz that has already set him apart as one of the most intriguing villains in the history of Gotham. Fans of DC Comics likely think they know what's next for Professor Pyg, as the character in the comics quickly introduced an hallucinogenic drug that turned regular people into deadly dolls called Dollotrons. While this is definitely a scare-tactic that audiences will be looking forward to, expect Gotham's take on the villain to go in a much different direction. While speaking with Michael Cerveris after his debut episode, we brought up the Dollotron storyline, and whether or not we would be seeing that in the future. "Yah, I don't want to give away completely," Cervis teased. "You know how much he's liked the Pyg in the comics, but I would say that his focus in Gotham is more on things to do with Gotham and with the city and with Jim Gordan. He's certainly is the manipulative character, and certainly, you know, is trying to get people to do stuff whether they know why they're doing it or not. But, that's sort of exclusive. His whole reason for existing is not the Dollotrons." It's disappointing that we might not see the Dollotrons with Professor Pyg this season but, as Cerveris continued, he revealed that their storyline could be coming in the future. "You do have characters in Gotham where the way we know them in the comic book is much later in their lives. You know, when Bruce has become Batman and stuff [like that]. It's possible that the Dollotrons are a later part of his life. You know, it's not mutually exclusive if we don't get to the Dollotron. You know, that doesn't mean that they just decided to get rid of it."
