Episode 7.14 - Farewell, My Pet

The CW: LORELAI AND CHRISTOPHER CONFRONT THEIR PROBLEMS - Two days after his by-pass surgery, Richard is on the road to recovery, and Rory returns to Yale, where she finds that Richard's economics class is now being taught by an attractive young professor, Tucker Culbertson (guest star Cameron Bender), who flusters Rory with his charm. While Lorelai (Lauren Graham) tries to distract herself from the issues in her marriage, she and Sookie focus on planning a funeral for one of Michel's beloved dogs. Finally, Christopher returns ready to talk, and he and Lorelai discuss the main problem that has haunted their marriage - Lorelai's feelings for Luke (Scott Patterson. Kelly Bishop, Keiko Agena, Liza Weil and Matt Czuchry also star.)

TV Guide: While Richard recuperates from surgery, a new professor (Cameron Bender) takes his place and steals Rory's heart with his charming ways. Meanwhile, Lorelai finds ways to avoid facing her problems with Christopher, including planning a funeral for one of Michel's departed dogs. But Christopher returns home and they discuss Lorelai's feelings for Luke.

TVRage.com: Days after his bypass, Richard beings the slow road to recovery and the Gilmores attempt to return to normalcy. Rory goes back to Yale and finds that her grandfather's class is now being taught by a young, attractive professor who catches Rory off-guard with his charm. In Stars Hollow, Lorelai tries to forget about her marital problems by helping Sookie plan a funeral for one of Michel's beloved dogs. Later, Christopher returns home and confronts Lorelai about the main issue hurting their marriage -- Lorelai's feelings for Luke.

Media Village: While Richard recovers from his by-pass surgery, Rory finds herself attracted to the handsome young professor who has taken over her grandfather's economics class. But the real draw in tonight's episode is the heart-to-heart between Lorelai and Christopher about Lorelai's lingering feelings for Luke. Why is everyone so down on Christopher, anyway? He's kind, he has a good sense of humor, he's attractive, he's successful and he's Rory's dad, for crying out loud! Oh, and he can also hold his own against Lorelai's maddening verbal excess, which would have sent a lesser man screaming into the woods of Stars Hollow by now.

Columbia Spectator: The day before Valentine's Day promises romance and heartbreak on the CW. At 8 p.m., loyal viewers of Gilmore Girls will see the Luke-Lorelai-Christopher love triangle reach a major turning point while Logan and Rory get closer together.

TV Guide Hot List: Daughters, more often than they'd like to admit, are a lot like their mothers. Last week, Emily implied (in one of those great moments between Lorelai and her mom) that she needed to keep busy to cope with Richard's illness. Tonight, Lorelai finds herself using the same defense mechanism, busying herself with a funeral for Michel's dog to keep from falling apart over her failing marriage. Meanwhile, Rory is charmed by the professor who fills in for her grandfather at Yale.

The CW: THE ROAD TO RECOVERY ─ At a Friday night dinner, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) works up the courage to tell her parents about the break-up of her marriage, but is derailed by their argument over the healthy meals and no-alcohol policy Emily (Kelly Bishop) has instituted to help Richard (Edward Herrmann) recover from his heart attack. Lorelai enlists Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) to bring Richard healthy but delicious meals, then helps Emily organize Richard’s business affairs. Over a shared bottle of scotch, Lorelai finally tells her mother about the breakup of her marriage. Rory (Alexis Bledel) attends an awkward birthday dinner for Logan (Matt Czuchry) with Mitchum Huntzberger (guest star Gregg Henry), who asks her to help him steer Logan in the right direction. Later, Logan receives disturbing news about the online company he purchased. Finally, Luke (Scott Patterson) shares his home with Liz (Kathleen Wilhoite), T.J. But Emily has enough on her plate when the recuperating Richard complains about his dietary restrictions and Emily's strict no-alcohol rule. Meanwhile, Rory plans a birthday celebration for Logan, whose dad calls to invite him and Rory to dinner instead; and Liz and T.J. stay with Luke while their home is fumigated because of a moth infestation.

Lorelai (Lauren Graham) takes over the shower-planning duties, and finds herself brokering peace between Lane and Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda) over how Lane plans to raise her twins. Logan (Matt Czuchry) finally admits his business disaster to Rory, who offers him her full support, but when Logan announces that he is flying to Las Vegas to blow off steam with his old college pals Colin and Finn, Rory is disappointed and worried. When Luke (Scott Patterson) discovers that Liz (Kathleen Wilhoite) and T.J. (Michael DeLuise) are trying to sell his boat, he decides to make some changes in his life and take April (Vanessa Marano) on a long boat trip over the summer. I should have been more specific, I meant in relation to Lorelai or April. Which is why I brought up Logan in relation to Rory. The last time I really remember Luke expressing a counter opinion to Lorelai was FF, and really it was in N&IL, after that he went along with everything Lorelai wanted, allowing her to ignore the elephant in the room. Or in the case of this season walked away seemingly with his tail between his legs. He's never had to, or been shown to say no to April, which is the big parenting challenge. So of course he has an idealic relationship with her.

I'm not talking about fighting everyone. That should be out of bounds, no matter what. I'm talking about his generally snarky, sarcastic, loner-luddite view of life. He's definitely less amusing and has become very soft and defanged. He's just not as much fun to watch anymore, not even with people like Kirk, Taylor or Zach. Maybe it's because Amy's not writing him anymore. He, at least, used to be good for a laugh. Not anymore.

When she was ill and ended up having to have her appendix removed? That really has no consiquences. It's not like when parents say no because they're parents and they're in charge, which is the challenge and where conflict comes from.
