Am I the only one who is a little nervous about these spoilers? The letter scene is going to be very difficult to get right. It would be really easy for the writers to make the letter either too cheesy or not cheesy enough. There is going to be so much anticipation about it, that I think viewers are bound to be disappointed when the scene actually airs. Besides, I haven't been too impressed with the writing so far this season so it would be miraculous if this letter really ended up sounding "true."

I'm not sure why people are getting so worked up over the Rory father figure issue. We're not even sure what the letter is going to say! Lorelai saying good things about Luke in regards to Rory doesn't diminish Richard's role in his granddaughter's life.

And for people who are calling this a "contrivance" well of course it is! There had to be a contrivance to break L/L up so now there has to be contrivance to get them back together. IMO, this idiotic direction should have never been taken in the first place.

I just hope this show can get back on track once Chris is gone. I miss the diner scenes with Lorelai and Rory.

Is this a spoiler? Are you out-and-out saying that Rory is going to call Luke her father figure?

Brave to post right now as a newbe but a good post and I agree but it's how things go, we get one spoiler and we're off.

We really cant say more about what Lorelai said until we see the letter or get more spoilers on it.

No, but then I never said that in the first place. The letter is going to testify to Luke's importance in Rory's life. She might even mention those mashed potatoes.

Welcome, vanillabuzzer. Good post.

And Huzzhah! to Nancy Pelosi.

Actually, at least around here, some fans are nervous and others probably want that letter to fall flat on its face.

Some of this year's writing has been good, a lot has been awful - who knows which 7.12 will be? We're living on a prayer here.

If only it were that simple. For what it's worth, I rather suspect Rory would agree with you. lol.

I love your Title...lol I don't really post here but SANTA left something for you in my email....

TUESDAY, JANUARY 23
“Santa’s Secret Stuff” (TV-PG) (HDTV)

LORELAI MAKES CHRISTMAS WAIT FOR RORY’S RETURN — Rather than celebrating Christmas while Rory (Alexis Bledel) is in London over the holidays, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Christopher (David Sutcliffe) decide to put their holidays on hold. Once Rory returns to Stars Hollow, they decorate several Christmas trees, do their shopping and even bake Christmas cookies for the first time as a family. Turning up unexpectedly at the inn, Luke (Scott Patterson) asks Lorelai to write a character recommendation letter for his custody battle over April (Vanessa Marano). Lorelai struggles to write the letter until she and Rory run into Luke and April at the mall and Lorelai suddenly remembers how important Luke has always been in Rory’s life. Inspired, Lorelai writes the letter and mails it to Luke’s attorney. Rory decides she will write an apology letter to her friend Lucy (Krysten Ritter), explaining why she and Marty kept their past friendship a secret. Melissa McCarthy and Keiko Agena also star. Lee Shallat Chemel directed the episode written by Rebecca Rand Kirshner

Oh, but you're not keeping up. Ciaobella promises that a tree is going to fall on my head because Rory is going to call Luke "Daddy." She's going to see Luke as the most important male figure in her life. The father she never had. The man who guided her through her life.

I think it's a spoiler. She sounds pretty sure. She must know.

I'm under no illusion that this is the fondest dream/wish of you and those of your like mind. Though since Lorelai apparently is still having problems with the letter long after the encounter with Luke, April & Rory, I'm doubting Rory's going to go on and on about Luke's great impact on her formative years. Talking about how he was nice and delivered her mashed potatoes out of his pot or made her coffee cake, and was an excellent uncle to Jess, that seems about right. But not quite what you're likely hoping for, I'd bet.

Again, I'm confused. Is RORY writing a letter? Is that what you're saying? Because I still don't get what this really all matters. Lorelai also said Rory loves Luke, but Rory's never said that. She's expressed she was proud he was going to be her stepfather, same thing she expressed with Max.

ETA ~ I'm wrong about the timing, but somehow I'm not doubting I'm wrong about what Rory says. Unless Ciaobella has a spoiler she wants to share.

Actually, the letter is going to testify what LORELAI sees as Luke's importance in Rory's life. A whole different bag of potatos.

Never said that. Now that's a real work of fiction. The warning about the tree - yes. But not that other fiction. But then again, if you say it enough you might believe I did.

Ooooh, Rebecca Rand Kirshner, my least favorite writer, next to David Rosenthal himself.

It's funny how the new writers are better at the banter and the spirit of this ENSEMBLE dramedy than these two "old" hands.

Oh, you mean Lorelai's guilt trip letter for a man who denied her access to his own daughter? Yeah, I put a lot of weight on that being truly representative of Rory's feelings. Maybe Lorelai can also write a letter about how much Rory really loves Marty and wishes she were living in a commune in Arkansas.

Oh, and wasn't Lorelai totally clear on the fact that Rory would hate spending time at the club, wouldn't want to have a coming out party, wouldn't want her portrait painted, wouldn't want to stay in the DAR, and would never go to any college but Harvard. She always knows how to read Rory. Never gets her wrong.

Thanks, micfall. We had part of the ep description but that last line is new - and interesting.

She's definitely basing these statements on guilt over how her relationship with Luke worked out -- and pity -- and not on the truth.
Absolutely not. IMO, anything positive she says about Luke, especially in regards to April, during this time is even more meaningful because of how hurt, angered and mad she still is under it all about how things went with Luke and how he hurt her. She doesn't have to do anything for him, and doesn't have a reason to say one nice thing about him after all this, yet she will... that says a lot, IMO, and I really think this letter will be totally honest. Once she is inspired here, she no longer has to force the letter obviously, which says to me that she's just writing down exactly how she feels and everything.

ETA: Rebecca Rand Kirshner writing ep. 11? yay! She's been around the longest, so hopefully would be able to write this Rory/Lorelai talking about Luke the best... was great with LL stuff in ep. 7.02... i'm happy. Thanks for the info!

Well, that is what I'm hoping for. I never thought of him as her father figure, but I did think of him as her friend, until the car went flying into the diner.

Which is exactly how I've always thought of him. But there are those that seem to need to embelish his role. Why I don't know.
