I think a lot of the reason Richard had a problem with Dean was he saw no intellectual curiosity in Dean and no iniciative to better himself. Richard turned out to be right. Nothing wrong with ending up where Dean's ended up, but he's certainly bitter about it. And the person he ended up being isn't a proper mate or equal to Rory.

She wouldn't have to worry about being a trophy wife, she'd have to be the bread winner.

ETA ~ Wayne, IA, also, part of Richard's idea of what a husband & father is supposed to do is provide for his family. That's part of what's behind the franchising thing.

exactly which is why i never believed Richard's actions towards luke to be that bad. Emily waited until Lorelai was comfortable before sicking chris on the relationship. Its true it shouldn't have had an impact if both LL were ready, but the fact that she seemed more concerned about her influence over lorelai than her own daughters happiness is an odd thing about this character and what makes it so easy for some to dislike about her. She does have her sweet moments, but Emily is one of those character you can't help be annoyed with. Just when you think you like her she pulls something to make you not want to. Also just when you want to hate her she does something sweet or exposes a gentle side to herself that you can't help but emphasize with.

No offense intended, but I find this comment inappropriate. Are you implying that because Dean went to a state college and worked in construction that he was not suitable for Rory? I'm no fan of Dean, and he never had Rory's intellectual curiosity, but I'm not sure that he should be considered "not a proper mate." Are only Ivy leaguers to marry other Ivy leaguers? Are only the wealthy to marry the wealthy? That is a little class-est, IMO.

I think she means "not appropriate" b/c "no intellectual curiosity in Dean and no iniciative to better himself."

Certainly Dean does not look like a match for a voracious reader who wants to see the world and be a part of something big.

Cue Jess--more compatable with Rory intellectually, ruined by the character assasination making him completely unsuitable for Rory to set up MV's spinoff

Nope, that he has no intellectual curiosity. That's what I mean. To me that's not who or what Rory is about. Not formal education.

While I'm not sure I consider Jess to be her intellectual equal I do think he had, in that department, the ability to keep her engaged. Marty as well. To me it has more to do with wanting to know more. Something Dean seemed to lose as he grew older. And it's something I think is important to Rory.

Not talking about SAHMs there. The above had moved on from the SAHM topic and was then responding to blaab about not being able to see either Rory or Lorelai staying at home, sans kids, doing nothing.

So Luke won't be driving Rory to the hospital? Shame.

in richards opinion yes. to richard being a proper mate is about providing for family. he also respects ambition and he saw none in dean. Also he saw the gap between rory's aspirations and dean's

I have no idea how he could even redeem himself in Rory's eyes anymore...his own daughter. I'm sad for Rory, knowing she can never have a good relationship with her father. And after all this happens, how the heck could she ever have a reasonable relationship with him? It'll always be awkward, with the baggage that's been brewing under the surface for 22 years, plus how he eloped with her mom, slept with her mom earlier...and now abandoning the entire family in a crisis....
What about her mother? Not exactly innocent in this whole affair. Why only blame Chris?

*****
Could Rory's storyline get any sadder, any more pathetic? Her relationship with Logan -- the only thing fully realized about her at the moment -- cannot move forward because Lorelai has to do everything first. As a result, R&L just spend time dealing with one irritation after another, just treading water waiting for Queen Lorelai to have it all. And what really irks is that they give us nothing else as recompense! No great career opportunity, no effort by Rory to find herself professionally, no advancement in that area at all.

I'm just incredibly disappointed and I never expected to be. I never expected this total nothingness. Big goose egg of a storyline. ASP. Thanks.

From Kristen, nothing new except the return date from hiatus (or did we have this info already?)

From Kirk: No Gilmore for how long?!
More than a month! It doesn't return till January 23. And when it does, the love triangle will continue, as Lorelai gets involved in Luke's custody battle for April, which could possibly send Christopher off the deep end.

makes me wonder how much she loves lurking at FF, FB, and TWOP.... but it always does sound so much more put together when her or MA says it.

So you undervalue what Emily does, just like Richard? You do know that Emily does everything Lorelai does and probably better, but doesn't get a paycheck for it.
