It's not about his existence. It's about what this show is *supposed* to be about, i.e., The Gilmore Girls. Not about Luke going out on dates, and taking swim classes, and having meetings with his ex-lover and bonding with his kid and having epiphanies about children and families via his sister and brother-in-law. None of that was about the diner or Stars Hollow or the townies nor did it involve Lorelai or Rory. It's creating a whole focus for the show that wasn't there before.

Rather than compare Rory vs. Luke, compare Luke now vs. Luke then, or compare Lorelai vs. Rory -- they're co-leads, they should have equal screentime. My guess is they don't.

The cause is one of those things no-one will agree on -- perhaps CaptainHawkeye can research if Lorelai has been getting more screentime than in the past. Maybe that would answer it once and for all.
Does he have more screen time than in S1 - S4, yes. I've been watching S2 and S3 recently. An episode like Lost & Found, my personal favorite Lukecentric episode, is rare. Does he have more than in S5 & S6 while involved with Lorelai, probably not. But like Chris now, his major storylines were attached to Lorelai's. Which is different from in the past.
