Ha, it's funny you used WBB as an example. I was going to do that earlier today, but got caught up in finally unpacking stuff from LA, lol. But that's exactly what I was thinking. At that time, no one had a problem with RL and LL taking the spot light away from ER! Poor ER.

GG has always used Big Events as background for personal drama. Sookie and Jackson's wedding, Zach and Lane's, Davey and Martha's baptisms, Rory's 21st Bday. The only time I saw some important event be about that event was Rory's graduation at Chilton. And even that had the subtext of romance bubbling underneath for both Rory and Lorelai.

Did we really expect the entire episode to be a play by play of Yale's commencement? When was the last time anyone attended a college graduation?
ZZZZzzzzzzzz.
The only problem with this is that none of these people (Emily and Richard, Zach and Lane, Davey and Martha) are named Rory Gilmore who happens to be the other star of the show. When ASP and DP staged an event that centered on Rory, it centered on Rory. This whole season has been centered on Lorelai, so I'd like one lousy episode -- Rory's graduation -- to focus on her. Just one.

I don't equate Emily and Richard to Rory. Rory is not a supporting character on this show.

No one's saying that it won't focus on Rory. I just think a graduation that ties together relationships with the bottom line of "we're all here for Rory because we love her" is far more poignant than a flat, take-out-all-other-SLs graduation episode. It's unrealistic and it's untrue to the show. Rory WILL get her time to shine and it will be even sweeter if everyone who is there to cheer her on managed to put their BS aside to be there for her.

ETA: If Luke is not at the graduation, there will STILL be an awkward moment between Lorelai and Christopher and possibly even ER and Christopher. There's no way to avoid te other SLs.

To add to the Luke at the graduation discussion (although it was pages ago, sorry): I think that the best and most brilliant GG episodes have been those that blend and intertwine all SLs -- and they can even still be focused on one event. My all-time favorite episode, WBB, did just this. I'm not saying the graduation will or should be NEARLY as dramatic, but I think if they manage to keep the focus on Rory while still tying together the other relationships (C/Lorelai, C/Luke, ER/Lorelai, ER/Luke or Chris, etc.) -- it will be a really fabulous episode.
Great point. I don't want the WHOLE episode to be about the graduation and nothing else. There has to be more and though I am not saying it has to be about L/L, I wouldn't mind it if we had a nice L/L scene before the actually graduation. Or after for that matter. Heh. I've never been to a College graduation but its sure doesn't scream great entertainment on end for me. I just want it to be Rory's moment and with nice sub stories. I can't see anything wrong with that.

I expect Rory's Yale grad to be like her Chilton one. The major spotlight will be on Her Accomplishments with a side of family drama caused by all parties being together in one place at one time.

I agree. I can hardly think of a major family event even with my family that didn't have some other stuff going on good or bad. But I think this will be especially so with the disjointed and dysfunctional family that Rory has.

ASP never made an event about one of the girls ever end up being just about said girl. Lorelai's graduation was filled with Rory/Jess drama. Lorelai opening up the inn, Rory/Dean drama. Rory's first graduation had LL stuff, Lorelai/E/R drama, a Sookie/Lorelai SL, etc. Rory's birthday party in season six had L/L and Lorelai/E/R drama. Same for her 16th birthday in season one. All her speeches at Chilton or Yale were either surrounded by Lorelai/Emily, Paris, Max/Lorelai or Lorelai/Chris drama. Her first day at Yale had LL stuff. Her first day at Chilton had Lorelai/Emily drama. There's never been a time when Chris returned for Rory that it didn't cause L/C or Lorelai/Emily stuff.

It's impossible to have an event like this to be just about Rory for 45 minutes when so many characters are all together.

How could it all be Rory? C/L/L/E/R just talking with Logan before the ceremony starts, continually saying "I'm so proud of Rory"? Or the camera on Rory the entire time as every students name is read and the audience falls asleep?

The only reason all the people are together in ep. 19 is because of Rory and to celebrate Rory. To me that says that the thing will be about Rory. Any CLL stuff is most likely going to end up being part of the family awkwardness and tension that happens during the waiting, mingling, sitting and post-party attending involved in a graduation. It's what happens in real life, it's what's happened in my life. Siblings and parent/children that might not get along, ex-husbands and wives, in-laws, etc, all having to sit there together in one row. There's always so much baggage involved in big gatherings that it never ends up being drama free, even if everyone's main focus is the person they're there see graduate.

Wow, I haven't been here in forever. So I feel like I should say hi or something rather than just jump in with my random post.

Apperantly there is also a Bob Dylan song named Corrina Corrina:
Quote:
Corrina, Corrina,
Gal, where you been so long?
Corrina, Corrina,
Gal, where you been so long?
I been worr'in' 'bout you, baby,
Baby, please come home.

I got a bird that whistles,
I got a bird that sings.
I got a bird that whistles,
I got a bird that sings.
But I ain' a-got Corrina,
Life don't mean a thing.

Corrina, Corrina,
Gal, you're on my mind.
Corrina, Corrina,
Gal, you're on my mind.
I'm a-thinkin' 'bout you, baby,
I just can't keep from crying.
The movie plot:
Quote:
When Manny Singer's wife dies, his young daughter Molly becomes mute and withdrawn. To help cope with looking after Molly, he hires sassy housekeeper Corrina Washington, who coaxes Molly out of her shell and shows father and daughter a whole new way of life. Manny and Corrina's friendship delights Molly and enrages the other townspeople.
