I think she meant that a family doesn't need to be the conventional one, the mother, the father, and the daughter. A family consists of people who you love and are close with, not necessarily based on 'genes.' Like just because Lorelai and Christopher and Rory are biologically tied, that doesn't make the picture perfect 'family'...i'm so bad at explaining things!

Tara Ashley, I'm guessing she means that Chris being a part of Lorelai and Rory's life doesn't necessarily mean that the three of them make a "family" - connection through blood doesn't necessarily mean it's a family. Your mileage may vary.

The only "date" is car shopping, maybe they test the back seat of the SUV

That's what I thought it meant, but for some reason I didn't catch that when I watched the interview online. I thought she flatly chose the "nuclear family".
