Maybe his pilot didn't get picked up? There doesn't seem to be any info out there on whether it did, so IDK.

Meanwhile we have the peeps over at tumblr freaking out over this article...I don't think there is anything too earth-shattering or unexpected there, but the idea they're going to "push the reset button" is always a little concerning. (This whole thing reminds me so much of Joey/Pacey and Season 5 of Dawson's Creek, as does the Nick/Jess relationship in general...I feel old LOL)

I am a little surprised at the freaking out on tumblr, but only because the writers said almost the exact same thing in their last interview.

That said, I still don't like how they are using the word re-set. It isn't a smart thing to tell fans of the show. Either they are really trying to misdirect (like they did a year ago), or they really are clueless. Now, Brett and Dave have written for a bunch of shows including 30 Rock, so I don't think they can be completely clueless. They must know that Nick and Jess are the heart of this show. I mean, it was only a few months ago that Liz said this show is basically Nick and Jess' love story. They can't have just totally changed their minds about everything so fast.

I believe that they are trying to throw viewers off because the story is supposed to be about them and how they will eventually make it work together. I'm sure we will have to endure some time with random dates and jealousy and stuff, but I think they are just trying to make it seem like it'll be longer than it really will be before they are back together. I still predict it'll happen by the end of season four.

I do think it is amazing that they would make statements like this in interviews right before the finale. It must be on purpose. No other explanations make much sense.

Yeah, I'm really surprised that this article got such a STRONGER response than the Larry King interview because it's not much different to me. They just expanded on it a little.

The only thing that really concerns me is the way they're entertaining the idea of "many seasons". My biggest fear is them being completely in the dark about how much time they have left, and then they get cut off without being ready for it. On the other hand, no EP is going to publically admit their show might be nearing its expiration date. So that could just be talk.

Not a fan of the term "re-set" myself, but it still seems to me like they know Nick and Jess are the central story.

For the most part, I liked this answer. I like that they're addressing the weirdness of the living situation and how it's not normal. I like hearing the words "change and grow". We know these writers often do what feels right to them in the moment, so all these things they plan on doing could very easily lead to Nick and Jess getting back together sooner than they thought. Same way they probably never expected to get them together in the second season. I don't think they're ever gonna be AGAINST Nick and Jess reuniting to the point where they'd avoid it or put it off. If it feels right next season, they're probably gonna let it happen.

It just sounds a little tone deaf, like they're addressing the "reset" comments to people who abandoned the the show in S2 and S3. Which is, uh...good luck with that.

I think they've been majorly burned by both the ratings drop and the critical/fan backlash this season. And I guess they think the Nick/Jess relationship is the major cause of that. I expect they will put N/J back together, but probably not until they know the show is ending. So, to quote Nick Miller...sad face.

Yeah, it's the terms 'many seasons' (which I think is just the writers expressing some wishful thinking about the longevity of the show) and 're-set' that are not making people happy. I think all the writers are definitely serious about the re-set part, though, because they keep saying it over and over.

So I think they really miss writing about six people who all have this open story ahead. They want to be able to feel free and not 'painted in a corner.' They have complained about how the hardest part of this season was writing more and more Nick and Jess stories, and it's probably true that they felt confined because of the relationship. But, he admits in that quote that they have a history now and baggage that they have to move forward with. So, they're not going to be completely free. They know that they can't just erase the past. Zooey has basically said the same thing when she said that now as they go on, they will be haunted by what they had. I'm guessing that Nick and Jess will not be able to find another relationship that will measure up, and if people like Julia and Paul were jealous in the past, that is nothing compared to what they will face if they try to date Nick or Jess next season. But, I'll admit, it'll be hard for me to watch. I mean, one minute ago, they were together and saying they loved each other. The abruptness of this whole thing has been painful. And I guess that's why it's felt real, too.

Doesn't it seem bizarre, though, that we have had so little cast promotion for this finale? No one on any late night shows, no morning shows, no sitting down with Ausiello, no radio shows. Nothing.

I'm just tired of the writers never following through on anything. They did such a horrible job with Schmidt and Nick's characters this season, I have a hard time finding any sort of faith that they'll actually develop these characters any better in a "reset" either. Then, the one thing that they DID keep consistent, they decided to throw away at the last minute too. It's really hard to have any sort of trust in what you're seeing at this point. Stop trying to reinvent yourself all the time and just DEVELOP SOMETHING.

I'm now of the opinion that they probably KNOW we aren't going to be satisfied with the ending tonight, and all this talk about the visions for next season is their attempt at somehow trying to justify their decisions.

They need to stop bouncing from one thing to the next and just pick a direction, because honestly, I've lost interest very quickly. I have no trust in these grand ideas of theirs where they want to continue to "fix" these people and somehow make them worthy of each other in the end. Sometimes they act like these characters are somehow supposed to TELL them what to do with them, when in reality the writers just actually have to WRITE for the characters. They're great at moments, but they don't know how to tell a whole story.

I think that is exactly how they do it. They think of funny situations, and then they all decide how they think the characters will behave in that situation at that time. They aren't planning far ahead. Because of the fact that New Girl is a sitcom, the characters can't grow into healthy human adults in healthy human relationships this early in the series. There would be nothing left to write after that point. I mean, the premise of this show is how ill equipped these six people are to function in society. But the rest of the premise is that they all care about each other, and their friendships are what they do best.

So, that really requires patience if we want to see growth. It will be slow. And whenever they take a step forward, they will probably take two steps backward. The writers surprised us (and probably themselves) by keeping Nick and Jess in a serious relationship for so long. And I think it somehow lulled us into believing that they'd change the premise of the show and let Nick's characters and Jess' character relax into a healthy relationship. That they would become real, true grown-ups. And, yes, these people are thirty-two years old. And yes, there might not be many more seasons. But the story of New Girl is that they are still going to have to learn how to be grown-ups before they are ready for their happily ever after.

So I can't say that the writers don't know how to tell a whole story until after I've seen the series finale. Until then, the story isn't finished. We're just finishing one of the middle chapters.

In a way, I think they HAVE followed through when it comes to Nick and Jess. Apparently it was never their plan to keep them together for the entire series. I think they always wanted them to have a first try/failed attempt. But they still kept them together for a decent amount of time, despite half the audience complaining. And now that they've broken up, they aren't making an easy fix by reuniting them in the finale….they're committing to this break up and probably will for awhile.

The story part was really meant for ALL the characters. I do wish they'd pick a story and at least CONTINUE it. So much was missing this season in the OTHER characters' stories. I'm still upset that they didn't do more with Schmidt and his family. Because of everything going on in his life this season, it would have been a great time to see more of where he came from.

I think the reset comments make it sound less like "We're committed to telling the story we always wanted to tell", and more like "Whoa, this season was a disaster!", and that is giving the fans a serious case of non-confidence in the writers. Because it's really an admission that they've lost control of their story.
