Unless, of course, Tony is saying similar things about Mary when he's with Mabel. "Oh, she's just an old childhood friend. No, of course I don't think of her in that way, darling. You're just listening to rumors. I can't stop thinking about you even when I'm near her. I'll be breaking it off soon." etc. etc. This is pretty standard fare for a guy trying to play two (or more...) girls. If you really want to make a choice you might be honest. But if you're trying to have the best of both worlds for as long as possible...well...that's when the flattery and double talk come in.

Question: I just love Downton Abbey. Any scoop on Season 5 you can share, especially about Anna and Mr. Bates? Will our favorite downstairs couple finally get their happy ending? —Heather

Ausiello: I posed that same basic question to Joanne Froggatt on the Emmy red carpet last week, and I saved the video just for this very occasion. According to my calculations, that makes this an Ask Ausiello exclusive! Woo-hoo!

Hmmm and where's the "exclusive" Mr Ausiello? Didn't hear anything new in this video, but maybe I'm stupid?? Someone else??

I'm kind of late to the party but here are my S5 trailer observations:

• Surprisingly no significant John Bates sighting in the preview and barely a glimpse of Rose.

• I agree that Thomas rescues Edith from the fire. The fire would be very intense in Edith’s room where it started so she’s probably the one being carried out of the room that is engulfed in flames. I recall reading that Baxter tells Cora about her secret and as a result Thomas’ place at Downton is in jeopardy. He does something to redeem himself in Cora’s eyes and it makes sense that saving Edith’s life would do just that.

• We already knew that there would be a Mary, Tom and Tony hunting scene from the picture that was leaked a while back. In a gif that really, really slows down this snippet, it appears Tony is saying something while Tom is shooting. Perhaps Tony is mentoring Tom by giving him some pointers. I’m glad to see Tony interacting with Tom. I would love for the two of them to become friends (they’re my two favorite guys on the show!).

• Tony asks Mary what she has to say to his “scandalous suggestion” (an episode one reviewer said Tony propositions Mary). The scene is most definitely happening in Mary’s bedroom. She looks to be dressed in a housecoat and her hair is down and in a braid which means she’s gotten ready for bed. Tony in Mary’s bedroom is scandalous right there plus it’s at night at bedtime. Perhaps he’s suggesting they do something right then and there but they’re interrupted by the fire. We see Mary and Tony following Tom down the hallway as he’s escaping the fire with the children. When the commotion dies down after the fire, I think someone is going to bring up the fact that Tony came out of Mary’s bedroom. Tony being in Mary’s room is going to be found out.

• A door is opening and Mary finds Tony standing behind it. This scene is most definitely happening at the Liverpool hotel. Back in February there were pictures of Mary and Tony exiting the Liverpool hotel together. Mary is wearing the same hat in those pictures and in this scene with Tony. Inside the hotel it’s not clear to me if they have adjoining/connecting rooms or they’re in a suite. Neither of them appears to be standing in a hotel hallway. Adjoining rooms would be more discreet but if they want to be discreet why would they leave the hotel together? Plus Tony gives Mary a peck on the cheek as they part. Mary has a nervous smile on her face when she sees Tony. Could it be she’s a bit nervous with anticipation? They’re shown kissing but there’s no way of knowing how far things go. It could be a false alarm as someone may change his/her mind or they’re interrupted again. It would be surprising if they make love but things certainly look to be going in that direction.
Mary isn’t wearing her wedding ring in this scene. Maybe she took it off because it reminds her of Matthew. She wouldn’t want that reminder if she’s planning to be with another man for the first time since his death. She could put it on again after. Just a theory…

• The horse racing scene:
Of course I haven’t seen this whole scene yet but I love it already! Mabel is there looking all young, beautiful and confident. Mary looks over in Mabel’s direction and I get the sense that Mary is feeling competitive towards her. Why is Mabel even there? My theory is Mary hasn’t fully committed to Tony yet or they’re on the outs for some reason and Mabel wants Tony back. It’s kind of hard to believe Mabel would still be unattached and would want Tony after he jilted her but I’m definitely getting a “Mary feels threatened by Mabel” kind of vibe. I think Mary is going to doubt she loves Tony. She’s going to think that it’s passion and not love that she feels for him. Maybe it takes Mabel’s interest in Tony to make Mary realize she loves him.

I really wish I could say definitively one way or another if that’s Tom in the far right of this picture. I can’t tell. Some have said it’s Tony right next to Mary and I’m not even sure of that. My first impression was that it isn’t Tony but now I’m not sure. I’ve never seen him in that kind of hat before. I don’t think it’s him but I’m just not sure.

One last thought…how about a Mabel and Tom pairing? We don’t know much about Mabel but she strikes me as a lovely lady who would be a great match for Tom. She’s young, modern and a bit spirited I suspect. I could go for it!

Well that’s my rambling for now…

LOL, it would certainly be unexpected if the "heiress of the year" went for an ex-chauffeur, but I would love it of course. She seems to be modern, is not too young and seems spirited. And she has no father any more to forbid it .

So I would totally go for it, but I don't really expect it to happen. Unfortunately I think she will leave with one of the suitors in her tow.

It's all a bit confusing because we know that the trailer contains scenes from the first 3-4 episodes, and not only from the season premiere.
For example, we know that the fire is in episode 1; but what about the Gillingham / Mary scene in Liverpool?
Also in the hunting scene Mary has already bobbed her hair, so it probably happens later in the series.

Also I'm quite curious about who Mary visits in prison. I just hope it's not Bates, but he was in the memorial scene, so I doubt it's him. One of the suitors perhaps?

And if I remember correctly, Gareth N. said that also in S5 there is a shocking / unexpected twist (like Sybil's death or Anna's rape). I wonder what that is, especially since we know none of the major characters die. Maybe it's Michael's return? Not a very dramatic development though...

ETA: I haven't understood what happens with the Greene storyline either. Some spoilers seem to indicate it's not about the murder investigation, but about Anna doubting Bates etc. etc. Then MD said that Mary destroyed evidence and she might not get away with that just because she's an aristocrat etc. IDK.

I also got the sense Mary is feeling competitive with Mabel, perhaps. Mabel seems like a threat! That whole horse race idea is amusing really. Tony and Blake trying to beat each other, Mary maybe wanting to beat Mabel. Mabel being a badass rider. Clever.

It's a horse race, people! Literally!

I think the trailer probably shows us scenes from 1-4 or 1-5 at the very latest.

I think the shocker is probably Banna related. But who knows? Wasn't Anna not there when they filmed the memorial ceremony in Bampton?

LOL, Robert called Sarah "an annoying little flea of a woman"? Oh God, I hate it when Robert is right! But that is perfect.

For some reason I'd been thinking those scenes were in episode 2, but I'm not sure if that was confirmed/speculated about in any way or just something I randomly came up with myself.

The only shocking twist I can come up with is that maybe Greene's killer isn't Bates, but someone like Anna or Tony...or maybe that Bates hired someone (maybe from his prison days) to do the deed for him.

I suggest Anna or Tony because they're two of the few people I can see Mary visiting in jail who have also have storyline connections to Greene (unless there's some other crime that happens this season). I don't want it to be either, necessarily -- even though I prefer Charles for Mary, I'd rather her choose him outright instead of choosing Tony and then them breaking up because he's a murderer.

And then, of course, there's the fact that neither of them are present at the memorial (though that could be for any reason -- I've seen some speculation that Anna wasn't there because she's either very pregnant or has to stay home because she's taking care of a newborn, and Tony might not be there simply because she hasn't made a final decision on the suitors yet).

Have we seen any pics of Anna from filming since she was on the street in London? I don't remember.

I don't read much into Tony not being at the memorial because it's just family and villagers there. Any love interests would probably not be there because it's not like they'd be married yet.

- Great point on the horse race HarshBench! It looks like the racers are going to have a lot of underlying motivations. For Downton, a horse race is quite the action scene! I'm loving it already!

- Here's my speculation on what's going to happen with the Green death:
Thomas has always hated Bates
Thomas was always after Baxter to keep her ears open and report back to him or else he would reveal her big, dark secret.
Baxter overheard quite a bit regarding Anna and Bates. She was in the room when Mary and Cora were discussing something was wrong between Anna and Bates. At the church bazaar she overheard some of the Mary/Anna conversation regarding Green being dead. In the CS she was there when Mrs. Hughes stepped into the hallway holding the train ticket after just discovering it in Bate's coat pocket. Baxter has information Thomas wants.
My theory:
Baxter gives in to Thomas' threats and tells him what she knows.
Thomas somehow gets word to the police that Green's death may not have been an accident.
The police investigate and are close to arresting Bates but before they do Anna confesses to killing Green. Anna is afraid that if Bates goes to trial for murder a second time he'll hang for sure. She said as much to Mrs. Hughes. She confesses to protect Bates.

Mary is very fond of Anna and goes to visit her in prison.

I hope I'm wrong. This storyline would be torture to watch. Anna in jail for a crime she didn't commit? No!!!
- Help please! Is that Tony next to Mary in that picture? I'm ashamed to say I'm not sure. Sometimes I think it is and then I look closer and think it isn't. Help!

- I'm a bit haunted by Allen Leech saying something happens in the first episode that made him sad when he read the script. I have a bad feeling that poor Isis may be killed in the fire. I hope not of course but what other theories do we have at this point?

The Daily Mail published four exclusive pages from the new Jessica Fellows book "A year of Downton Abbey", which will be published on September 25th.

It contains a lot of new pictures and a few spoilers. Here are the five articles:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...nton-book.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...nton-book.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2743268/Romance-horizon-Read-exclusive-extracts-new-Downton-book.html

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2743284/The-battle-Downton-Read-exclusive-extracts-new-Downton-book.html

What I found interesting:

About Tony:

Quote:
'He’s inherently quite a sad man, trapped in a system he no longer believes in. You get the feeling he’s hiding away and when he meets Mary, she makes him feel alive, that maybe he does have a chance to live a life he might actually want. She gives him vitality.’

About Blake:

Quote:
‘They have similarities. They’re both quite dominant and speak their minds, but are actually quite practical when it comes down to it. I also think he finds her frustratingly mysterious. She wrong-foots him, she’s obviously intelligent and very capable, which he finds attractive.’

About Mary:

Quote:
‘My destiny is to save Downton for George,’ says Mary.

The question is whether she decides to protect it in the traditional way, through a second suitable marriage to a man with money and power of his own, which would stabilise Downton, or in a radical new way, through industry and modern farming methods.

About Tom (and Sybbie):

Quote:
Sybbie is the child of rebellious parents and it is certain that Tom will wish to let her know of her Irish ancestry – he had her christened a Catholic – as well as his strong socialist ideals. However, he finds himself parallel to Mary, if travelling in the opposite direction – he is drawn to the old world and those that occupy it or, at least, he does not damn them as outright as he used to.

There's also a picture of Sarah Bunting educating Daisy, which I think is interesting and it is revealed that they're indeed listening to a speech of the King in the scene with the wireless, as was speculated.
