Worst comic storylines....

Or even, biggest fanfare and hype that led to a huge letdown....

Spider-Man Clone saga tops the list. damn near killed off the franchise with that storyline. and don't get me started on the current 'Sins Past' stuff.

Batman: Cataclysm/No Man's Land- don't know if anyone else read this crap but it was the most boring Batman run in the last decade in my opinion.

Spawn: the entire run so far... cause we've basically been waiting for Spawn's true purpose and it's basically become the same crap over and over.

Deathmate: back in the 90's, Image and Valiant were #3 and #4 in the biz and this was supposed to be a huge crossover but delays caused one of the chapters to ship to stores after the Epilogue issue. big disappointment there.

-Just about anything done in the 90's turns me off.

-The "Weapon X/13" storyline in New X-Men. I loved that run, but that arc was so confusing and boring.

-"The Draco" in Uncanny X-Men. I loved the first two issues, then it became a mess.

-I've given up on Brian Azzarello/Jim Lee's run on Superman.

-Ultimate X-Men since Mark Millar left the book.

-And I'm not loving "Avenger Disassembled". It's not bad, but not really good either.

Great idea for a topic Joe. I have a feeling it's going to be popular. ;)

'Draco' It sounded like a good idea but it ended up a terrible one and 'She Lies With Angels' was pretty bad as well, although that was more bearable due to the art. Actually thinking about it all the X-Titles have been quite bad lately.

joeschmo 11-04-2004 12:24 AM

ahh... 'She lies with Angels' was too cliche and hokey for me. you could literally see what was going to happen next.

GL Rebirth. ;p - i'm part of the Kyle fan club minority.

wanderer78 11-04-2004 01:39 AM

I actually like "She Lies With Angels". Yeah, it was predictable, I'm just a sucker for Romeo and Juliet stories.

joe, I read the first issue of the GL series, and didn't like it. I like Kyle (and John) too. But I was looking foward to it b/c I like Geoff Johns work. I doubt I'll be reading it much further.

From what I understand, the X-writers have had very little freedom in terms of storylines with the exception of Grant Morrison and of course Joss Whedon.

joeschmo 11-04-2004 02:34 AM

not that i have a problem with Hal... but i think that Kyle has done well as his replacement and it would be like DC bringing back Barry Allen to replace Wally West. in fact, they should and then they should start a fued with the Silver Age GL/Flash/Green Arrow against the 'new' guys.

as for the X-Men, I'm a fan of Austen's work but that particularly arc didn't sit well with me. and really, Claremont has done some confusing stuff in X-Treme X-Men that i didn't like either.

wanderer78 11-04-2004 03:11 AM

I like Austen too. I never understood why he's bashed so much. Some of his arcs get messy and confusing, and sometimes sloppily written, but I don't think he's that much worse than some others.

DC fans generally hate change from what I've seen on the DC message boards online.

Ok, so I REALLY have to disagree. I LOVE Batman: No Man's Land!!! Ok, so Cataclysm was a bit disappointing AND Road To No Man's Land was a damn shambles, which essentially was DC finishing contracts etc and FINALLY getting rid of Chuck Dixon from the main Batman titles, who's glory days passed in '96 at the latest (excluding the first 30-40 issues of Nightwing).

Biggest disappointment HAS to be Superman's ALMOST UNREADABLE Electric Powers / New Costume saga. That had, maybe 3 good issues in TOTAL from a year or two run on one storyline! Also, like Dixon, EVERY member of the creative team at that time was well past their prime, and some, like Stuart Immonen never had anything to begin with! (Whoever convinced DC to let him draw ANYTHING was the greatest sales man of all time!)

wanderer78 11-05-2004 03:05 AM

 Welcome to FF exile001. Stuart Immonen has been doing decent work on Ultimate Fantastic Four. Sometimes artists and writers need some time to do decent work.

Speaking of the Ultimate Universe, that's starting to go downhill for me. It's starting to have the same problems as the regular Marvel Universe. Wolverine is currently on a mission in Russia, in Peter Parker's body at PP's high school, and fighting Gambit in the Empire State Building. WTF??

And instead of being introduced carefully; it seems like a zillion minor Ultimate version of Marvel characters are being introduced at once.

I can't believe I've never posted on this thread...

The Clone Saga is without a doubt the worst storyline, probably ever. I can't imagine how TPTB at Marvel ever thought that this would have been a well received idea in the first place: "Let's go back and replace one of our most beloved characters with this new guy, and say that the Spider-man we all know and love has been a fake all these years." Yeah. Great plan.

joeschmo 02-02-2005 12:18 PM

well DC can drop old classic characters and update them (Barry Allen Flash for Wally West, Hal Jordan GL for Kyle Rayner), so why couldn't Marvel do it with Spidey? :goof: yeah, the Clone Saga definitely has a place in infamy as almost destroying the Spidey franchise altogether.

Peter Parker: Spider-Man 02-03-2005 11:15 AM

How about the JMS Spidey storrylien that gave him Spider-telepathy (what the f:censored:ck ) and then organic webshooters? Anyone else ntoice the trend at Marvel? when a movie comes out about a Char. they have to make the Char. EXACTLY like the movie version IE the movie costumes being incorparated into X-Men.) Wait to sell out JMS

Really? I thought it was Paul Jenkins that gave him the organic web shooters. Interesting...

Peter Parker: Spider-Man 02-08-2005 11:15 AM

uh did I say JMS? Sorry I just got done freaking out about the the Gwen clone situation (hpoing that she would stay burried in the back isue bin) and I typed JMS. But yes Paul Jenkins should be slapped for what he's done
