first ever HIV infected superhero....

i actually like the character of Mia, dating back to her debut in Quiver. still, it's a serious topic and i think it helps a great deal that Winick is writing the story, having lived with Pedro on the 'Real World'. this is a definite groundbreaking moment and it'll be interesting to see how fan reaction is. |

I believe Northstar (Alpha Flight/X-Men) was positive once. I'm gonna check it out.

I think that Winnick's friendship with Pedro will mean that this development is actually a natural part of the storyline, rather than the publicity stunt I would normally write it off as.

This looks like it's going to be good. I really want to see how they handle this.

i don't think it's a publicity stunt. Winick is big on AIDS awareness and education and he's definitely going to reach a ton of people through this book. read 'Pedro and Me' if you haven't already for reference. rarely does a comic (graphic novel) move me to tears but that one did.

I'm almost scared to read "Pedro and Me", because I'll know I'll start crying. I lost two co-workers to AIDS, so it might hit too close to home.
I don't think it's a gimmick. I like Mia a lot. I actually "feel bad" that she has HIV. And she's fictional. I don't know. DC fans generally don't like change. I think it's good idea personally. I think it's different. Comics usually make up a symbolic or analogous disease (ie the "Legacy Virus" in the X-Men). Thanks for the news Joe. __________________

Coming from a personal stand point on HIV (My mom has it long story I rather not get into PM or AIM I will probably talk about it another time). I am glad their finally breaking down the walls in comics with this character. I just hope the writers will handle this character well. Hopefully the comic book character Mia will teach kids who read the comic dangers of contracting HIV by using drugs or unprotected sex.

Survivor (wow your posting handle suits you). Thanks for your honesty. And of course you don't have to share details.
Let us know how realistically this story is being done. I'd love to hear your input if that's OK. __________________

naw, Mia (Speedy) is just a sidekick in the Green Arrow series. it might be possible to get her into a mini-series of her own if she gets popular enough. MTV just did a segment on this today, about Judd writing about an HIV character and the connection to Pedro. overall, i'm thinking this whole storyline was a good idea.

I just read the issue yesterday. I thought it was really well done. There was a lot of information to digest, but it didn't feel forced. I thought the ending was beautiful.
My local comic shop has sold out of it already. __________________

I'm usually leery of these storylines, b/c they can be done badly. But I thought it was good. I checked some MB's where people thought it didn't "belong" in a comic book, or thought JW was just being exploitative and/or repetitive.
