all of our libraries stock loads of graphic novels. i find it very amusing as they tend to be in the teenage sections whereas obviously the content of a great many is 18+ ratede.g. sandman, invisibles etc. i borred the recent hardback of short stories (was that endless nights?) and it didn't do much for me i'm afraid. i went to a festival last summer and my husband was accosted by a group of molly dancers begging for his death t-shirt. suffice to say there was no way they were getting it

A library that stocks comics on shelves? Haven't seen one yet, unfortunately; closest I got were some loose Marvel comics in baskets.

Whatever I can get from the library, is through the online order system from some remote location in the woods. Takes months, but free is free, even with the *cough* unsightly condition that some copies in arrive in.

Something about Europe and the need for "education" rubs us North Americans the wrong way, apparently.

Sandman news from Crossbow:

Hey, guys, I don't usually come here, but I just got back from a Neil Gaiman book signing, and they were handing out fliers for a Sandman convention November 12-14 in Minneapolis. Details at: http://www.fiddlersgreencon.org/

Oooo, I didn't know there was a Sandman thread. Unfortunately, since I read them during their furst run, I think I'm pretty much talked-out about them.

I think the best ones are the first eight. #4 is my very favorite, but the first eight make a complete story, and #8 is the only one with decent art.

I actually started with #2. Everyone kept saying how good #1 was, but the art sucked and I wanted nothing to do with it. But by the time I was finished with issue #2, I was hooked for life. After it ended, I tried to get into "The Dreaming," but it didn't grab me at all.

I read a miniseries about Thessaly. That's about it. I'll admit, the art does turn me off a bit, even though I'm more into the writing than the art.

I've only read a miniseries about Thessaly (not written by Gaiman).

But I'm starting to get interested in his storytelling. I'll have to visit your thread.

I want to read the Death ones. She seems like a really great character.

I'm in a much smaller area now. So harder to get trades thru the library than it was in st louis. Too bad really, would be a great way to introduce more folks to the medium of comics.

I need to buy many backissues of the Sandman, but did any of you regularly keep up with Sandman while it was running? That is impressive if you have because that means you've been collecting comics for almost 20 years. I should be able to collect each issue though before the Sandman film comes out, which is not scheduled for release until 2011. If yor were unaware, Sandman has had many developement issues. Roger Vary was first going to direct the film, but was fired after the film had 8 scripts & 3 writers. Neil Gaman who is the writer of Sandman called it the worst script he's ever seen and read. All together Sandman stories hav won 18 Eisner Awards though, so it must be pretty good.

I've never been able to get into Sandman. I was collecting comics while it was ongoing, but I didn't really follow it.

I have seen some Sandman covers & they look great, especially the issues of the Absolute Sandman. Those ones are pricey though, so I haven't bought them yet.

McKean's covers were awesome, but, as with a lot of Vertigo stuff, especially the early stuff, the interiors weren't that good at all.
