Here's my Team Starkid: Apocalyptour Review (originally posted on my Tumblr). Hidden for possible totally awesome spoilers. Warning: Its long.

So despite one of the worst van rides I’ve ever taken (getting lost in stop and go traffic during a crazy busy Saturday, in Boston, no less (and then blowing $50 on desperation parking)) I have nothing but praise. I attended with my brother, who only knew their song Dynamic duet, and he even had a great time. He’s not a Starkid (yet) but he appreciated it.

I got to my seats with ten minutes before opener Charlene Kaye was to perform. I wasn’t very close to the stage, but its a small venue and I could see everything. I felt kind of out of place among the screaming teenage girls, but the energy at the House of Blues was incredible and hey, can’t get mad at them for enjoying something I do.

Anyway, Charlene Kaye did a commendable job. Her stage presence seemed kind of fake or off, or something, but she was likable enough and a fine musician to boot. I wouldn’t call myself a fan, per se, but for a half hour performance, I dug it and there were two standout songs (like the catchy and fun “Animal Love”).

Then Team Starkid arrived. The show started with the band playing jungle noises. The Starkids each came out of a tent to raucous screams of joy, starting with Joey, then Walker and then Dylan. They opened with “Me and My Dick” and the rest of the Starkids came out. They never did say “dick,”

After the intro, the cast (dressed in jungle archeology gear) introduced the premise, saying they had given up singing for archeology and that they’d better get to work. They then summoned the Mayan god “Marguerite” (Jim Povolo) who threatened the destruction of the world, lest the group known as “Dikrats” perform some musical theater.

I’ve gotta say, it was a clever premise for connecting material from several shows and it was awesome seeing them interact with each other in character as themselves. It was pretty hilarious and lived up to their excellent standards. I just wish we had gotten to see more of them not singing.

They sang a lot of Starkid favorites, three songs from Holy Musical B@man and even some lesser known songs. It helped being familiar with their material because every time they started a popular song, or made a reference (Starkid or otherwise), or did something totally awesome the audience screamed which might annoy newcomers.

Thoughts on Each Starkid

Jaime Lyn Beatty - A favorite of mine because of her comedic talents, Apocalyptour showcased how talented she is overall. She was definitely the breakout star last night. she sang (and danced) her heart out and really showed what a vocal powerhouse she is. She was my brother’s favorite because of her pipes and because “she’s sexy” (Which is true, but they’re all sexy, IMO). Highlight: Not Alone

Dylan Saunders - I forget just how pphenomenal a singer Dylan is because he usually gets the comedic weirdo authority figure roles. We got a little extra Dylan action when he dueted with Charlene Kaye on that song she recorded with Darren Criss, and he nailed The Way I Do. All around great performance by him. Highlight: The Way I Do

Joe Walker - Wearing the shortest shorts of the entire group, Joe Walker looked absolutely hysterical and was hysterical during the show. But that man sang and danced his ass off. He is going to do great things. He really managed to show off the amazing things he can do with his voice. The range of octaves and styles he can reach is amazing. Highlight: Dark, Sad, Lonely Night

Brian Holden - I was glad to see Brian get equal time as the other performers of the show, seeing how he was my favorite male Starkid (now I love them all). I’ve got nothing specific to add, except to say that he kept up with and deserves exactly as much recognition as the rest of the Starkids because he was a key element in holding the show together. rHighlight: Guys Like Potter

Meredith Stepien - Meredith is know, I think, for being funny. She definitely brought it and then some yesterday. But she has an incredible and powerful voice and by the end of the night, I knew that without any doubts. She sang her heart off and then some and I hesitate to say whether she or Jaime is a better singer. And man, can she dance. This lady is going somewhere. Highlight: The Way I Do

Brian Rosenthal - I never paid much attention to him, though I loved him as Quirrel. Putting him in equal footing with the other Starkids allowed him to really shine and stand out. His comedic timing on par with Joey Richter and the physical comedy and energy that a guy so small put off was phenomenal. It was hilarious when he popped out of Joey’s chest as his heart too. Highlight: Listen to Your Heart

Lauren Lopez -Would have loved to see her as Draco, or Taz, but it was actually kind of nice seeing her as herself for once. Lauren is a lot of fun, has great energy and seeing her sing without disguising her voice was a treat, because she has a great one. I was worried that as herself she might not have as much personality but those fears were quickly paid to rest by her dance skills and charisma. Highlight: Granger Danger

Joey Richter - Probably the most well known, other than Darrent, There is a reason for that. He’s brilliant. He may be the goofiest looking, but hes a seriously talented guy. I can’t pinpoint a single thing that made him so special,but he just has this Joey Richter quality to him that he pretty much oozed the whole show. Highlight: Ready to Go, Granger Danger, Me and My Dick

Brian Povolo - I wish I was more familiar with him, but I’m not. We didn’t get to see him sing, except for a few songs toward the end, but as the Mayan god “Marguerite” we got to see him act commanding and he was absolutely hilarious. He wasn’t onstage as much as the others but he did a great job, which more than made up for that. And for the ladies, he was shirtless the whole time. Highlight: Everything he did

Non-Musical Highlights

1. The premise and its execution
2. “Marguerite”
3. Sacrificing Joey Richter and seeing his heart jump out
4. The general interaction between Starkids
5. Audience energy

So that’s it. Apocalyptour was incredible and Id go again in a hot mminute. Can’t wait for their next show and tour.

I would have loved to see it. The wole explorers theme seems amusing. I was surprised when you said Brian Rosenthal. I didn't think he was doing the tour. Looks like they did some great tracks. Listen to your Heart is one of my favorites. Did Brian sing it as well as A.J Holmes? Also good to hear they did some titles from HMB. And how did they manage to do "Me and My Dick" without saying "dick"? Did they say anything about when the DVDs are going to be released? Thanks for the review.

It surpassed all mine, too! My sister downloaded all the songs and we played them as part of our huge master playlist on vacation. Our parents were not too pleased with the lyrics to "To Be A Man" but that's like our favorite one.

How have I only just found this thread??? I loved HMB and I think I love it even more because I'm wasn't a fan of superheros at all until this play. Actually it was because of HMB that I saw the Dark Knight Rises and the other two Batman films.

I actually got to see them live during their Apocalyptour over the summer.
