Vertigo Discussion #1: Take A Walk on the Dark Side...

Marvel and DC Comics are the bread and butter of the comics industry, but the Vertigo imprint has made a strong mark upon readers looking for darker, edgier material aimed at adults

Vertigo's homepage is a good place to start for anyone looking up their titles.

What does everyone read?

I love Vertigo. I read Fables, and Y: the Last Man religiously.

I'm planning to start with the 50th issue of 100 Bullets. It's supposed to be a jumping on point.

I like Human Target and Losers, but I'm really, really behind on both.

For trades, I'm working through the first volume of "The Invisibles".

Need to catch up on Fables and start up on Y: The Last Man eventually...

100 Bullets has a very intricate continuity: #50 should be a good starting point, but a lot of finer distinctions will be harder to make. I've read the entire run of trades through 4-5 times, and each time there are more subtle yet informative things that I pick up.

Losers I'm waiting for in trade form; heard rumours that it'll be printed as one of the smaller digest sized trades.

The Invisibles is pretty crazy; I've got the first three trades, and it only gets stranger as you go along. There's a total of seven (the third volume was collected in one enormous trade), which apparently has a...unsettling ending. I have an idea what it is, but won't spoil it.

The Filth (pictured above, 13 issues) is a lot like The Invisibles. Done by Grant Morrison and Chris Weston, it goes in...odd directions as well.

Losers is out in regular sized trade. It collects the first 5 or 6 issues. I was going to buy it, but I'm pretty sure I have those issues piled somewhere.

Everything Grant Morrison does eventually turns weird.
Even the first trade of Invisibles is kind of losing me.

Losers is already out as a trade? Wicked.

Morrison takes a lot of getting used to; even his more mainstream work like New X-Men has polarized a lot of readers.

I think Morrison is brilliant. I loved his NXM run. I often find myself defending it on message boards.

I like Invisibles a lot. But I am getting lost pretty early.

I like both as well, but find them disorienting from time to time. The first trade for Invisibles is a lot stronger compared to the other two in the first volume.

The Filth seemed to be odd but without the heart or intellect of Invisibles, not sure I'll ever check that out in spite of the engagingly Spartan cover design.

Speaking of polarizing. I love Frank Quitely too. I'm looking foward to "Bite Club". It's supposed to be "Buffy meets Sopranos".

Quitely only does covers, not interior art. Not a fan of Chaykin, unfortunately...

I know he only does covers. I read the first issue. It was OK, good enough for me to get the second at least.

And I hate to admit it, but Fables is starting to bore me.

Fables?!? I've only read the first trade and The Last Castle, but it seems like a concept that's rife with story possibilities.

Flipped through some recent issues; don't really want to ask why you don't find it as interesting, as it could be spoilerish...

Check out Y: The Last Man, if you don't already read it; might find that a refreshing alternative.

I've read all of Y. It was one of the first comic books I started reading.

Fables isn't horrible. It's gaining momentum towards the crux of the series. I guess I just always found the small stories more interesting.

Check out Oni, a lot of their titles have a Vertigo-esque feel, but the subject matter is either lighter or more esoteric.

Y's last issue (#22) was fantastic. I don't mean to plug other boards. But, Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra both post on the Y board at the Vertigo site.

Grant Morrison is back on Vertigo.

Written by Grant Morrison; art and covers by Cameron Stewart

Award-winning writer Grant Morrison charts new territory with a 3-issue miniseries filled with colorful heroes, sinister theme parks, beautifully bearded women, a cigar-smoking tuna fish, and art by Cameron Stewart (CATWOMAN)!

Set in a world where all the major battles have been won, Seaguy is a wistful, would-be hero who, with his pal Chubby Da Choona, embarks on a fantastical, picaresque voyage through a post-Utopian world filled with bizarre adventure and terrible sacrifice.

On Sale May 19th, 2004

Still need to check out Y: The Last Man. Read the first issue, but sold it awhile ago to raise cash for some trades.

Will grab those, Fables trade 2 onward, and some Oni stuff in the next few months...
