Batman Discussion Thread

Ok I think we need to discuss the one and only Dark Knight, and possiblity one of the greatest superheroes ever. Batman! Heres the thread where u can discuss the character himself or characters associated with Batman (Robin, Catwoman, Joker etc), his 60's TV series, the animated series (Batman, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice Friends etc.) and his movies.

Batman Rumors Jul. 10, 2003

Source: Batman on Film, Moviehole by: Bob Menard

There have been rumors flying left and right lately about Christopher Nolan's BATMAN project and seeing as it's a relatively slow news day today, I figured I'd pass along a few interesting ones that have sprouted recently courtesy of the site dedicated to nothing more than BATMAN films, the aptly titled Batman on Film. According to a source that (surprise, surprise) can't be named and can't say who he or she works for because they are purportedly bidding for work on the film, dropped some pretty detailed scoops to the site. Block of salt here folks...

To start us off the source claims that there was definitely interest in Ashton Kutcher by Warner Bros. but they backed off, valuing their relationship with Nolan too much to push someone on him; Nolan doesn't necessarily want to make a "dark" film but a more "serious" film, a "comic adventure w/ real world feel"; The Batmobile and the Batsuit will likely get revamped looks with the car looking like a modified Viper and the costume taking on more elements from the comic and losing the "rubber" look; Christian Bale's name comes up again here, with his REIGN OF FIRE co-star Matthew McCoughnahey's name tossed around for his DC Comics counterpart, SUPERMAN, saying that the two could play the 25-30 year old age range that would be required for the inevitable sequels and proposed cross-over between the two superheroes; With Bruce Wayne reverting to a younger age, so too would the peripheral characters associated with the Dark Knight. This would mean younger versions of Alfred, Commissioner Gordon & Harvey Dent; And what of Harvey Dent? Well he won't be Two-Face in the film, instead, "Dent will be a contemporary of Wayne's; look for him to be in his mid thirties. Names for the part include Noah Wiley from ER, David Duchovney, & Dougray Scott (also mentioned for Bruce Wayne)! Gordon has no names attached, but agents for Dennis Quaid, Sam Neil, Patrick Swayze (?!) & Dylan McDermott(?!) have all been contacted. WB/Nolan want Gordon to be a significant role in the upcoming franchise. Look for him to be a grizzled, hard as nails cop that begrudgingly befriends Batman."

There is some pretty cool stuff there... Is Dougray Scott looking to hop into the superhero market after giving up the chance of a lifetime by passing on the role of Wolverine... I'm having a hard time picturing any of the people mentioned playing Commissioner Gordon, with the exception of maybe McDermott, just for something different. Come to think of it, he wouldn't make a bad Batman...

I haven't read Hush yet, only the first two issues before the essential story really starts. I *love* the art though and I've heard only good about it so far.

The only Lee/Loeb issue I have read is the issue where Batman was beating the heck out of the Joker. (Can't remember the issue). I really liked the art, but i have no clue about the storyline at all.

The voice talent is really good, but Batwoman (voiced by Kyra Sedgwick)? Not exactly mind blowing creativity...

Still, I really liked the first two (especially Mask Of The Phantasm), will eventually check it out. Hope a local channel broadcasts it in the future; caught the 2nd animated film that way.

I have Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Superman Movie and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker... really like all of them. So, I'll probably buy this new one. I want the Animated Series on DVD too, but the way they're selling them right now is ridiculous. I'll wait to see if they'll ever collect the series in a boxed set later on.

Did anyone else read Batman: Tenses? It's a two part mini.

It's received mixed reviews. Personally, I loved it and thought it was a better read than the Hush arc.

HH--
I can't wait to hear your opinion on the Hush arc.

Personally, I thought #619 was horrible. The story up until 618 was good, then it all deflated in the last issue. What a letdown. Loeb needs to stay away from future Batman projects, I think he's run out of ink.

I welcome Azzarello with open arms. #620 comes out this Wednesday. Yay!

Mariarocks--
I'll PM it to you because I don't feel like making spoiler space for one sentence.

The sad thing is, I don't even like Loeb. His work is always above average, but never great in my mind.

Haven't had time to go to the comic store lately...ack.

Batman 620 is SO good. This one issue is better than the entire Hush arc.

This issue is getting mixed reviews though. Some love it (like me!) and others hate it saying that this is not how a Batman book should be. Some even suggest that it should've been done under the Vertigo title.

Me, I'm just glad it's being done. Period. Azzarello is an amazing writer and his version of Batman/Gotham is a breath of fresh air.

I thought #620 was great. It was fascinating (and to be honest, I was confused at some points, but maybe it's because I'm not used to the style). I'm intrigued. The art kicks butt.
