Animator Quits Scanner? The Austin Chronicle reported a rumor that the animator who was working with director Richard Linklater on the upcoming SF movie A Scanner Darkly has quit. Bob Sabiston created the rotoscoping animation process that Linklater used on his previous film, Waking Life, and was using the same method to animate sequences in Scanner, which stars Keanu Reeves and is based on a Philip K. Dick novel. Warner Independent had pushed back the release of A Scanner Darkly to March 2006 from this September, citing delays in the animation process, the newspaper reported. Sabiston declined to comment to the Austin Chronicle and did not respond to SCI FI Wire's request for an interview.

The Vine: Stone clocks in for 'Night' shift Oliver Stone is in talks to direct "The Night Watchman." The feature film is an adaptation of James Ellroy's script about a disgraced police officer who sets out to rid the police force of corruption. The project, which has been in the works for some time, is being refinanced, with Avi Lerner in talks to finance through his Millenium Films' banner. Spike Lee was set to direct Keanu Reeves in the long-gestating project but has since dropped off to helm "Inside Man" for Universal Pictures. Alexandra Milchan, Lucas Foster and Erwin Stoff are producing. The producers are awaiting a new draft of the script from John Ridley and will then move toward closing deals with Stone and Reeves. "Night Watchman" has been through several incarnations. At one point, David Fincher was in talks to direct for Regency Enterprises and Bruce Berman for Warner Bros. Pictures. Stone most recently directed "Alexander," which has grossed $167.6 million worldwide. Stone and Reeves are repped by CAA.

Stone Denies Night Watchman It was reported recently in the trades that Oscar-winner Oliver Stone was mulling directing the James Ellroy tale The Night Watchmen. Spike Lee had previously been attached to helm the LAPD crime drama but dropped out. Keanu Reeves is still apparently attached to star. Stone, however, is not directing the film after all. He issued a press release on the matter. "Contrary to recent reports in the media, I've never announced or intend to make films called Constantine, The Night Watchman or the life story of Margaret Thatcher," Stone's press release Thursday declared. Stone had been developing a script with writer John Ridley but "it didn't work out. ... I'm no longer involved with it." Producer Avi Lerner is thought to be financing Night Watchman via his Millenium Films' shingle.

Keanu is the only person definalty cast as yet. Its directed by Oliver Stone who was the producer of Alexander.
