Clay Aiken News Thread #3

Going to repost some of the more recent news...

From Clay's official site about Solitaire:

Quote:
Due to your overwhelming support and enthusiasm, Clay's version of 'Solitaire' is being prepared for release as a b-side. Initially, it was intended to be on an 'Invisible' single. However, since Clay's new single will be out early in 2004, 'Solitaire' will be released as a b-side for that song. This new version, done with producer Clif Magness, has turned out so well...we can't wait for you to hear it. Keep an eye on the site for the forthcoming release date, and the announcement of the new single!
Thanks again for all your tremendous support...and have a great Holiday!
--------

On one of Kelly's sites you can ask her friend Jess questions. Here is one from the other day.

Quote:
Q: Some radio DJ said that KElly and Clay will be touring together! I like Clay but I REALLY just wanted a Kelly tour!! Is there any truth to this rumor Jess? Since of course YOU would know heheh

JESS: It's not a done deal yet...but that is probably what is going to happen. Have no fear though! You're still gonna get the same great Kelly-goodness rather or not Clay is there. Same number of songs same Kelly manorisms...same ol' Kelly...but it just makes sense business-wise....it costs a lot of money to tour...and since the performers front the money for touring...

Clay's Not Aiken for Manners
(Tuesday, December 16 12:33 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - While its annual awards may not receive the same amount of press as the Nobel Prize, the Golden Globes or Time Person of the Year, the National League of Junior Cotillions has unveiled its list of the 10 Best Mannered People of 2003. Leading this year's list is, quite naturally, "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken.
The NLJC, the nation's only organization that trains and licenses directors to establish local cotillion programs, honored Aiken for "his example of humility and politeness." He beat out Oprah Winfrey on the list, but naturally Aiken is too much of a gentleman to taunt.

This is the 12th year that the NLJC has paid tribute to the celebrities the group feels best epitomize the virtues of ethics and etiquette that they espouse. This year's list also includes Gen. Tommy Franks, Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, surfer Bethany Hamilton ("for the manner in which she handled the adversity of a shark attack"), Tony Blair, Mel Gibson, Tom Brokaw, Laura Bush and last year's winner, Condoleeza Rice.

The list is generated by cotillion directors and participants nationwide. Perhaps the group was trying to send a message to two-time runner up and 2000 winner George Bush, who may not have shown the French and the United Nations sufficient manners at times this year.
"Clay Aiken of 'American Idol' fame was chosen because of the courteous manner in which he treats fellow performers and fans," says Anne Colvin Winters, the league's executive director.

Previous Best Mannered winners have included slugger Mark McGwire, billionaire Bill Gates and Reginald Denny.

Rumsfeld admits that subjecting the prisoner to repeated showings of Trista and Ryan's wedding is cruel, but adds: `So is Saddam'WEB EXCLUSIVE
Newsweek
Updated: 3:57 p.m. ET Dec. 16, 2003Dec. 16 - U.S. intelligence officers interrogating Saddam Hussein are pressuring him to cooperate by repeatedly showing him ABC's two-hour wedding special featuring "Bachelorette" Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter, the Pentagon acknowledged today.

advertisement

News of the Pentagon's use of "Trista and Ryan's Wedding" rippled through international human rights circles today, with some activists claiming that showing certain reality programs to prisoners of war could be in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

"Watching Trista marry Ryan once is punishment, but watching it six, seven times in a row may in fact constitute torture," said Dr. Josef Claire, a leading human rights watchdog based in Brussels.

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld told reporters that showing Saddam the video of the Rehn-Sutter nuptials was "something we did not enter into lightly."

"Is forcing someone to watch 'Trista and Ryan's Wedding' cruel? Yes," Mr. Rumsfeld said. "But I submit to you: so is Saddam Hussein."

In addition to defending the showing of the excruciating wedding special, the Defense Secretary refused to rule out playing Clay Aiken's new CD to the Iraqi madman "over and over again."

"If I may remind you, gentlemen," he said, "we are at war."

In other Saddam news, the owner of the farm in Tikrit where the Iraqi strongman was captured is objecting to the media's characterization of the dictator's hiding place as a "hole."

"You try to rent out a place that everybody and his uncle is calling a hole," the farmer said. "Okay, it's not roomy, but it would be perfect for a young couple starting out."

From the NY Times:

Quote:
Industry executives, music retailers, Fox and advertisers are betting the "American Idol" juggernaut will prove fruitful for several years. The next season of the show, an elimination contest in which aspiring stars sing before a panel of three judges and then submit to the votes of viewers in later rounds, begins on Jan. 19. The winner and runner-up receive one-record contracts with Bertelsmann's RCA Music Group, with options for additional releases. Clive Davis, chairman of RCA, said that he had albums from Ms. Clarkson and Mr. Studdard on tap for 2004, along with two CD's from Mr. Aiken.
I hope one of those is a Christmas CD.

News: Clay Plays Clay On NBC's Ed
Posted on Wednesday, December 17 @ 11:25:15 PST by admin

'THIS IS THE NIGHT' FOR 'AMERICAN IDOL'S' CLAY AIKEN WHEN HE MAKES ACTING DEBUT AND GUEST-STARS AS HIMSELF IN EPISODE OF NBC'S "ED"

Clay Aiken -- RCA records Double Platinum recording artist and the runnerup from the hit show "American Idol" -- makes his acting debut as a singing star when he "pops" up as himself on an episode of NBC's "Ed" for broadcast in late January.

Born and raised in Raleigh North Carolina, Aiken's musical talent was evident when he was just three years old. His love for music and singing led him to join the Raleigh Boys Choir and by seventh grade he became a member of his school choir. In high school, Aiken won roles in high school productions of "Oklahoma," "The Music Man" and a dinner theater stint in "The Sound of Music" one summer (where one of his co-stars Frankie Muniz before the teen starred in "Malcolm in the Middle").

After enrolling in college, Aiken decided to study special education and was soon assigned to the Bubel family in Charlotte, to care for their son Mike. Interestingly, it was Mike's mother, Diane, who told Clay he should audition for the second season of "American Idol."

"Measure of a Man," Aiken's much-anticipated debut album, is already certified double platinum and had an extraordinary first week at retail, with sales of 613,000 copies and a smashing debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Aiken has the third highest first-week sales figure of 2003, and the second-highest first week total of any debuting solo artist in the SoundScan era. "Measure Of A Man" sold more copies than any other album by a debuting solo artist since Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" in December 1993.

Tom Cavanagh stars in the quirky comedy-drama series with Julie Bowen, Josh Randall, JanaMarie Hupp, Lesley Boone, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Ian Black, Justin Long, Michael Genadry, Rachel Cronin and Marcy Harriell.

"Ed" is produced by NBC Studios in association with Worldwide Pants, Inc. and Viacom Productions. The creators are Rob Burnett ("Late Show with David Letterman") and Jon Beckerman ("Late Show with David Letterman"). The executive producers are Rob Burnett, Jon Beckerman and David Letterman.

Clay Aiken's Solitaire
by James Shepherd (2003/12/17)

I wonder if Clay Aiken fans feel a bit teased by RCA when it announced the release of the new single Invisible/Solitaire, and then to have it delayed twice, with the second delay giving no specific date? I am sure that RCA was not intending to tease people, but were the delays the result of increased sales of the album through more radio play as Invisible has finally crept up the singles charts? If such is the case, this begs the question as to the function of singles in today's music marketplace. Are singles merely a costly marketing tool used by the recording industry? How many singles need to be sold in order to break even and bring in a profit? Is there even a break even point on singles, and are they merely expensive marketing tools for an album?

Apparently, RCA has now decided to cancel the proposed single Invisible/Solitaire. Well that was a really big tease was it not? Never fear, at least the record label has shown itself to be quite astute indeed by suggesting Solitaire as the "B" side, and actually knows what Clay fans want and are looking for. Whether it will actually deliver another single of substance in the near future is another question, but at least it leaves room for a bit of fun in speculating what kind of single mixes RCA could cook up. Let us see what could be.

The Way/Solitaire

If Clay and RCA have been not getting along lately, the area of contention may be in what should be combined with Solitaire. Solitaire is for the fans, and whatever else goes with Solitaire from "Measure of a Man" is to promote the album. Since Solitaire is already out there as a single, but to only the radio stations, if a new single is to be released for the public to buy, the album would be better promoted by releasing another cut from the album. This is not brain surgery. The Way was one of the few album cuts that even negative reviewers actually liked. But why stop here? Why no consideration for other combinations?

I Will Carry You/Unchained Melody

If RCA thinks that Clay fans would pick up The Way/Solitaire single simply to get their hands on Solitaire, the fans would do the same for Unchained Melody. Also, I truly believe that I Will Carry You is the best cut on "Measure of a Man." It would appeal to a broad market in radio. But what do I know, eh? As for Unchained Melody, I think that radio stations would give this one a go on their play-lists too.

Measure of a Man/Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

Surely releasing a single with the cover song of the album is an appropriate marketing step, not to mention that the song, Measure of a Man, is a one of the best ballads on Clay's album. As for the Elton John's classic, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, it was Clay's performance of this number in the wild-card competition of AI2 that made many people perk up and take notice of him. Even Simon Cowell gave one of his very few public compliments to Clay after Randy and Paula both gave Clay a standing ovation. There is a personal significance of this song for the fans, and they would make this single another platinum - you can bet on it!

Touch/On the Wings of Love

Touch stands out on Clay's album because it seems so different from the rest of the recordings. It is not my favourite, but I am aware that many people do like this number. It has a slightly sassy feel to its beat that I usually do not enjoy in a song, but Clay's melodic voice takes it through to a realm wherein I can find comfort. On the Wings of Love was already recorded by Clay on the "American Idol 2, All-Time Classic American Love Songs" album. Clay's rendition of this song is quite memorable, and this would be the quickest single to make since both sides have been previously recorded, not to mention inexpensive to produce.

Singles Promoting Separate Albums

Suppose the following scenario ensued:
- RCA released all four singles described above at intervals of two months apart starting early in 2004. All four singles would be available for purchase by the public, of course.
- Three or four months after the release of the last single, RCA released Clay Aiken's second album entitled: "Classic Pop: Clay Aiken." On this album would be those four cuts from the "B" side of the four singles, plus 8-10 other classic pop songs.

In essence, RCA would be able to use these singles to promote "Measure of a Man," and the upcoming new album - "Classic Pop." Given the past history of the buying power of Clay fans I believe that one can be fairly certain that all four of these singles would be soon certified gold, and a couple of them would probably shoot up into the platinum range.

What the radio stations would see is that RCA is really serious about this new artist, Clay Aiken. This kind of "hint" from RCA might force reconsideration of prejudices that radio management could be holding. Let us face it, no one releases four singles from one artist in a period of eight months this day and age. Surely people will take notice of this event. But if they don't, at least Clay can go off to receive even more awards next year for having four hit singles.

The real beauty of such a scheme though rests in the fact that with the release of each one of these singles, Clay's first album, "Measure of a Man" would be promoted, and, Clay's upcoming album would be promoted too - please note, I'm just using "Classic Pop" as a working title for this phantom album. Who knows what RCA and Clay have up their sleeves for the next album.

Christmastime is a Time for Dreaming

Now comes the real fun. I have already told Clive Davis at RCA how to promote Clay Aiken in this article. I doubt such arrogance on my part will be well received, but I'd rather look at it as merely a suggestion to RCA to "think outside of the box." As long as thinking outside of the box is not being done in a padded cell, then everything should be ok.

As for the phantom upcoming album of Clay Aiken's that I have titled "Classic Pop," what would be the numbers on it? Well, I have already identified four of them from above:
Solitaire
Unchained Melody
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
On the Wings of Love

What about the rest? Below is my suggested list:
Dream Lover
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me
My Girl
Open Arms
Bridge Over Troubled Water*
Here, There, Everywhere
What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
Crying**
To Love Somebody***
When a Man Loves a Woman***

______
*Not the cut from Clay's single, but rather, the live performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water from the final program of AI2 competition - it's just much better.
**I am very reluctant to listen to anyone sing that old Roy Orbison classic, Crying, because I believe Orbison had the best male singing voice in the last half of the 20th century. But I think if anyone can do the song justice, it would be Clay.
***These seem to be very special favourites of Clay fans.

I am certain that Clay fans would have many other suggestions for the contents of the next album. Please send them to RCA. As for all those anti-Clay people, please refrain from sending me more emails asking how much the Claymaniacs paid me to write this article. I received not a penny from them.
SHeesh!! Sounds good to me

Luann Comic Strip: Luann De Groot is about to have an unexpected encounter with one of the most famous singers in America. The star of the "Luann" comic strip, which runs in newspapers all over the U.S. and
the world, is going to bump into Clay Aiken. The two-week story arc begins Monday, Dec. 29. Greg Evans, creator of "Luann," was inspired to feature Aiken as a guest star in the comic strip when he attended a
release party for Aiken's debut album thrown by fans in Los Angeles. Evans had just arrived that day in Los Angeles for a month-long series of meetings at Dick Clark Productions, where he and Billboard
reporter/TV writer Fred Bronson have sold "Luann" as a live-action series. Greg and Fred had planned to have dinner that night, and Fred told Greg during dinner he was welcome to come along to the release
party for "Measure of a Man" at the Burbank Hilton. It was Evans' first encounter with Clay Aiken fans. When Clay actually dropped by the party to thank the fans on his way to LAX to catch a flight to New York, Evans came up with the idea for a "Luann" storyline that would include Clay. The story will run in the Monday-Saturday comic strips. The strips can be read in local newspapers, or online at: www.unitedmedia.com/comics/luann/ Check out the drawing attached to this e-mail of Clay and Luann! This drawing was done especially for
Clay, who will receive a signed copy from the illustrator, Greg Evans.

That was a nice interview. Which is why I think the fans should ask the questions. Instead of, "Are you and Ruben really friends?" and "Did you see the card? Seriously?" we actually get some new stuff.

From The Clayboard:

Quote:
CLAY ON RALEIGH RADIO THIS MORNING - MORE DETAILS ADDED
---------------------------------------------------------
Clay was just on Raleigh radio station G105 for an interview this morning with Bob of the Showgram. Among the tidbits learned:

1. He's tired of the same old questions being asked in interviews.

2. He talked about the Foundation and what it hopes to do.

3. They played Kimberley's new song.

4. He mimicked a reporter in a valley girl voice which was hysterical.

5. He had his first diva moment when RCA asked him to do the MTV New Years Eve show. He has YMCA friends coming out to LA next week to visit and he said he'd do the MTV thing only if RCA would fly his friends to NY too and they agreed.

6. Bob the DJ made a derogatory comment about his Raleigh fans (that's the way to get listeners, Bob) and Clay told him that was mean and that his Raleigh fans - and all fans - have been very supportive and caring of him and the Foundation.

7. A caller asked about the tour and he said nothing is definite yet and that it might be solo or it might be with someone else and that they hoped to do it early 2004. Probably smaller venues except for Raleigh (a definite stop or he won't do it at all!!!) where only the RB Center would be big enough.

8. He talked about being sick recently and said he almost cancelled the Indianapolis show. Chris Edge who works at the Indianapolis radio station used to be at G105 in Raleigh.

9. He wants to do a Christmas album next year.

10. He really wants more vacation.

11. He sang White Christmas with Bob. (Bob, don't quit your day job.)

12. He's nonconfrontional but he's learning to be more assertive about what he wants to do.

That's all I can remember now. It was a good interview.

ETA: CariomeClay just reminded me about Kathy Griffin and the Billboard awards. Clay said that his mother was not happy about the introduction and that the director of the show had a camera on her but decided not to show her. Clay said that Kathy talked to him beforehand about the introduction. He said he thought about bending her over and planting a big ole kiss on her when he accepted his award but decided that he would just be playing into the sleeziness of the entire show - and he really thought it was sleezy and was embarrassed for his mother. He said that he thought Triumph was nice to him and that the puppeteer had apologized to him many times about the PETA thing and said he didn't realize how the PETA ad was going to play out.
