Yeah, "dubbed" is when the translation replaces the original voices.

There are three options when you translate a movie/TV show.

Dubbing is probably the most popular.

Another is to simply lay the new voices on top of the old ones.

I'm not sure why that's done, but a lot of reality TV shows, for instances, do it that way.

Stuff like the Kardashians, I mean.

And the third option is subtitles.

That's my favourite way of seeing translated material (be it movies or TV shows).

Because, then, you get to hear the people who are talking and their real voices and their emotions, etc.

I find that much easier to understand and follow.
Ignore me.

Sorry for the double posting. I'm having troubles today.

I have several of Matt's movies, so I'm definitely wanting to buy it.

Cause I could pretty much watch him read a book.

I would have to agree-subtitles are easier for me.

At least when I've seen movies on channels that aren't English.

That makes sense as to it being easier to hear what the actors are putting into their performances, along with seeing the translation in writing.

Well, the thing to know about The Martian is that, you know, it's basically a Buffy product.

Not literally, obviously.

But Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay. And he wrote for Buffy before that.

The dialogue in the movie has the kind of comedy/sarcasm Buffy had in its dialogue.

So that, even if things look dire, they don't get melodramatic about it.

It's brilliant, because it allows you to feel the seriousness of the situation without losing track of the amazing people who are in front of you.

I loved it.

And, yeah, I always always prefer subtitles.

Even if it's not a language I understand, I'd rather follow the actor's emotions.

That helps me understand what's happening.

Oh cool.

I didn't know he did the Martian.

I think I'll like just the story even.

Not to mention the way you're describing it.

It sounds like exactly my cup of tea.

I never really thought about the emotions, but it makes me think I probably noticed at the time.

I can't remember what I've seen with subtitles, but I know at least a couple of operas.

Well, the basic plot of The Martian could be very dry.

A guy gets left behind on Mars, and then it's about how he makes it until they can go and get him.

And how they can go get him.

So it helps that the guy who wrote the screenplay had good training at putting personality in a dry storyline.

Like, what really stood out is that the characters are complicated, but none of them is exactly evil.

And then they all have personality.

It's a funny movie, even, in the same sort of way that Buffy was funny.

Meaning it's not a comedy, but the people in it have a sense of humour and of sarcasm.

I like a sense of humor and sarcasm a lot.

It's good to know the characters are like that.

It makes me even more interested in seeing it.

I like movies that are dry I think.

But it would definitely be cheesy, like 50's and 60's space movies.

Well, The Martian isn't cheesy.

At least, I didn't think so.

Because the fact that, if they don't find a way to save him relatively "quickly," Mark Whatney will die.

All the characters have a sense of humour, which is awesome.

But the real danger that Mark can and will die if things don't go exactly according to plan (and there are problems that come up) is always right in front of us.

It doesn't strike me as cheesy.

At least from the parts I've seen on TV ads.

Hm, that's good to know.

Cause I would be panicked wondering all the time if he was going to die at that moment.

Well, if you want I can tell you whether he makes it or not.

Because whether he survives is the whole plot of the movie.

So, you know, they they always put forward reasons why he shouldn't survive.

The movie is about how he "sciences" his way out of the problems, I guess.

But a lot of them are completely outside his control.

Thanks, and yes, please tell me.

I think most stuff on TV and in movies are about overcoming things.

Different things to overcome, obviously, but I think the best are about triumphs.

I'll put it in spoiler tags just in case someone pops by here and doesn't want to know.

Spoiler:

Most of all, though, I think it's just a very encouraging movie.

Just in the way that everyone, and I do mean everyone pulls together to try and get him back to Earth, you know?

There is no villain in this movie.

Not everyone is super likeable, maybe, but there is no bad person in the whole cast.

Just people who deal with different priorities.

Oh good-I like when there aren't villains in a movie where there is already intensity and drama.

That makes me want to see it even more.

Okay, I won't comment on what I read.

That was a good idea-the spoiler tags.

Thanks for letting me know what's what.

Aside from the whole "travelling to Mars" thing, the movie is completely realistic.

So, just like there are no villains in life, there is no villain in this movie.

Hey, have you seen that they've continued to air Rosewood repeats at 9pm?
