No, she won't change.

I would probably be the same was as her.

Mom and Kev are generally more patient than I am.

And I was always keeping busy rather than sitting down to eat.

Other than being rushed because of the "blizzard" did you guys have fun?

Or was it too rushed to tell?
I don't really think we have patience.

We're used to her and the way she is, for sure.

But the rest isn't patience.

I don't know what it is, though.

There's just something where we have to defend ourselves a little bit, even though that makes it sound like she's attacking us.

She's not, obviously.

But she's very controlling and manipulative when she's stressed out.

And most times it doesn't cost you anything to let her have her way.

But then... I mean, it's our Christmas, too.

And we did have a good time.

We did. My mother's lovely, for all that she's not perfect.

I mean, none of us are either, obviously.

Mom's are definitely human, like the rest of us.

Oh I meant you were patient in wanting to open presents, in case I didn't make sense when I said that about patience.

And your post also makes sense if you did understand me.

I'm glad you had a good time, despite the stress.

Thanks for the new thread.

My favourite part of presents is the opening of them.

One of those years where I got yet more gift certificates, my dad and brother went through the trouble of wrapping them up in a fake present thing.

You know, my brother grabbed a box, put a can of beans in it and the gift certificate and wrapped it up.

My dad wrote out "sofa bed," cut up the letters, and wrapped them in three individual boxes.

All because everyone knows my favourite part is the unwrapping.

And I'm one of those who slowly, carefully, unwraps a present a little teeny tiny bit at a time.

All to prolong the process as much as I can.

Unwrapping is lots of fun.

That's cool that they went to that effort for you.

Oh no! You're one of those slow people who make the rest of us wait.

I rush. I can't make myself wait.

I think that's great that you do that, and can do that.

You really enjoy the opening, and treat yourself to that.

We have used gift bags, but this year we're wrapping. I missed opening presents.

If I understand you correctly, that would make you one of those who rush the rest of us, huh?

To each their own, of course.

For me, I just don't like to be rushed.

Isn't it supposed to be fun?

My brother rips the paper off everything and that's how he enjoys it.

Good for him.

It's not like I'm arguing with him to do it my way and slow down.

I'm just not sure what my mother's afraid is going to happen if we take our time.

And it's not like I want to argue with her about that either.

It's supposed to be fun, right?

I got rushed by Mom this year.

I am one of the people who usually rushed the rest of the family.

I don't know.

You're smart to not try to get people to do it another way.

I never really considered it before now.

Yeah, it's definitely supposed to be fun.

Everyone enjoys it in their way and that's the main thing.

But I just don't understand what we're rushing for.

What's gonna happen if we don't rush?

What's the danger here?

Anyway, we got rushed at my dad's because one of my nieces if a little she-devil.

I mean, she's probably not a she-devil.

But she wants things her way and the rest of us are there to give it to her.

Apparently, though, you can't reason with a 6-year-old.

I used to just not be able to wait to see what I got-cause I was usually looking for something I had asked for.

I don't know why you guys would be in danger if you didn't rush.

Your mom has never said?

at the she-devil.

Is she like, a hellion in the bad way-like out of control?

That would tend to tick me off.

Were you disappointed you had to rush there?

Yes, I imagine it really is difficult to reason with a 6 year old.

Though they are old enough to understand if you ask me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was very impatient about presents, too, when I was a child.

Which is probably why I should show more patience towards my niece.

I mean, the season is basically all about children anyway, right?

So I shouldn't mind going at her pace rather than mine.

As for the danger of slowing down, I have no idea what goes on in my mother's mind.

I can't really imagine what it is.

Because all it is seems to be irrational stress.

But stress over what?

Even she doesn't know.

We had a conversation this afternoon about it and she was all "didn't I do so good this year?"

And, you know, I was thinking about how we had to keep reminding her that we had the whole evening in front of us and how she kept trying to bargain for us to do everything earlier and faster.

So, basically, she doesn't realize she's doing it or that it makes no sense.

Ooh, that's a good point about kids and Christmas.

I haven't been around kids in so long I hadn't thought of that.

It's funny how our parents need our approval at times.

My mom does that a lot-"Didn't I do good?"

Yeah, she probably does not have a clue of why she's doing it, or that she is doing it.

Did she end up slowing down, or did ya'll end up having to rush the whole time?

My mother didn't slow down, no.

I mean, that's what she was trying to get us to say she did, with the whole "didn't I do so good?" bit.

We tried to get her to slow down, but no dice.

She thinks she's doing better because the rest of us refuse to comply.

But that's not fun for us, so I'm not really sure how that amounts to "better."

I mean, our choices are letting her go at her pace and we're running through the holiday or constantly fighting her so that we get a little bit of breathing room.

So, it's children and old people.

My mom does that too-asking if she did good when she didn't do any different.

Maybe better is her feeling like she's doing better by compromise? Even though she didn't change what she was doing?

Hm, who knows why moms do what they do.

Yeah, I have no idea why moms do the things they do.

All I know is I would love for my mother to be able to compromise for real.

I mean, I realize it might be childish of me, but I have a difficult time keeping a good attitude when she's always fighting to do everything her way and get everyone to do it her way as well.

If it was just her business, then that's her business.

She can do whatever she wants with it.

But I don't like feeling manipulated or bossed around.

I wish I could put a smile on it for her sake, but I can't.

I wish you compromise for this year!

Compromise is definitely something good to want and work towards.

Good point-it's not fair to inflict that on all of you.

I'd have a hard time, too. Me, I just get cranky.

I so wish I could make things better for you on Christmas.

Nothing against your mom from me, still, you're the one who's my friend and who I want the best for.

Best case would be compromise, but it's your happiness and cheerfulness that I care most about.
