What a water softener?

Busy day yesterday My 1,5 hours at the hospital were JUST enough to watch the double iZombie finale. Then I had to fill out some paperwork (getting the form from one building, filling it out and bringing it to another building. BUREAUCRACY! ). Went home, took a nap (I never do that!), folded a lot of laundry, and did a lot of dishes.

Mascha you probably live in the land of perpetually soft water if you don't know what one is.

So here in Tucson (really a lot of places in the US) there is a lot of dissolved rock particles in our water. You can't see it, but it builds up in your water heater, faucets, on your shower. You get literal calcium buildup over time, and in order to get it off you have to use strong chemicals that'll dissolve it. It also leads to an increased risk of kidney stones. It's called "hard water" because...you know, dissolved rocks. So traditional water softeners run the water through a salt bath that helps pull out some of those dissolved rocks. But the tradeoff is that (A) If your water is REALLY hard, then it will soften but not get rid of everything and (B) You have high sodium content in your water, which is a problem for those with heart disease. So my softener will completely get rid of the dissolved rocks so there's no calcium buildup in my pipes, showers, etc.

I don't work there, unfortunately I'm a patient there I have Crohn's disease and get my meds every 6 weeks through IV. Takes about 1,5 hours, just enough to watch two episodes

Got the grades on my project today the final grade isn't THAT awesome, but I already expected that
I got a 7.3 (B+/A, aaccording to our university grade conversion table ) on my report and on my presentation, so that's great
BUT, I got a 5.0 (F, insufficient) on my research skills, because I should've done more interviews, as I was well aware of, and this grade weighs heavy on the final grade. But my final (average) grade is a 6.0 (C), so at least it's sufficient and I'm DONE with this, and never doing something like this ever again
The most important thing is I learned a LOT, and can take all that knowledge into my next projects

This does really decrease my GPA though Not that anyone here cares about GPAs, luckily

Now I really feel like closing this chapter, fiiiiinally

Rae - we have the best drinking water in the WORLD. Our land is literally known for water water water, water everywhere. Half of the country is below sea level, for crying out loud
But yeah, then I understand, I do know the difference between soft and hard water We get some carbonate build up in the shower etc. over time, but it's not that bad. Just using a regular bathroom cleaner is enough
We do own a reverse osmosis device, but that's to prepare water for our fishtanks, for the fishies that need REALLY soft water. We just drink directly from the water tap

ETA: OK, I totally overdid on the smileys, AGAIN

Congrats on your passing grade Mascha! I remember when I had to take Organic Chemistry I was praying for a D. And I got it! I passed and never had to take that dag blasted class again. Sometimes you want that A and sometimes you're just happy you passed.

Where I grew up, everyone drinks from the tap, but here in Tucson it tastes pretty gross.

D is a passing grade? I always thought a D was insufficient But organic chemistry definitely sucks, so kudos to you!

Since I realized an American 'A' includes everything above 7.3 in our 1 to 10 grading system, I'm realizing I've actually gotten a LOT of A's in my life. Feels good I always heard the term 'straight A student' in movies and tv shows, and always thought they were students only getting 9's and 10's (our grading system goes from 1 to 10, everything above 5.5 is a passing grade). And that would be basically IMPOSSIBLE here.

Thanks guys So happy to be done with this. Apparently working at an NGO is not for me

Now I'll have time to raid the board again!

Our grading system for papers/tests etc are based on a percentage of possible points. If you're doing straight (not curving) then
60 = D
70 = C
80 = B
90 = A

For our GPA it's different. Most places have a 4 point system. So A's are 4, B's are 3, C's are 2, and D's are 1 point. And the points are added and then divided by total credits.

So say for example you took 5 3-credit courses and got 4 A's and 1 B. This is the math to figure your GPA

(4x12) + (3 x 3) = 57/15 = 3.8 GPA
