Are You A Movie Snob?

I'm not. I like all kinds of movies, and while I do expect excellence from certain sources, I do not have the same standard for every movie I see. The same I watch an indie or a big studio popcorn fest. If the movie sucks it sucks no matter where it comes from or who directed it, acted in it, wrote it and/or produced it. Good stuff (and bad stuff) can come from anywhere.

I don't expect every movie to be a discovery, every performance to be a breakthrough, etc. Like every other thing in life, movies have ranges, they have ideas, and they have a vision behind it that will not always be cinematic dynamite, but if it's entertaining, good natured or at least honest with itself, then I have no problems with that.

The only thing I'm kind of 'snobbish' about is widescreen. I don't like to watch movies in full screen unless it was structured that way and it was the director's intention for the movie to be seen in that ratio.

Otherwise, a movie is a movie to me.

Same here. All my DVDs are widescreen. I refuse to buy a DVD if it's only available in full-screen format.

I'm snobby in the sense that I only watch wide releases. I don't watch foreign films because I don't like having to read while watching a movie. If I wanted to read, I'd pick up a book. (I also hate closed captioning on TV.) And I don't watch indie flicks mostly because I don't hear enough about them to become interested and because they're not that accessible at school.

But the wide releases, I'll watch just about anything that looks entertaining. I don't stick to any specific genre, and I don't care if critics/people love it or hate it. Some of my favorite movies are as acclaimed as The Dark Knight and Love Actually to as panned as The Fast & the Furious and Romeo Must Die.

Oh gosh, urban dictionary has a really funny (and true) definition of what a movie snob is.

Urban Dictionary: movie snob

Also, in case some of you don't know if you are or aren't a movie snob, here is a list to live by.

Ten signs that you currently are/or are becoming a movie snob
Don’t think of these as symptoms, instead think of them as signs of personal growth

1. You have completely discounted a movie because you didn’t like one of the actors.
2. You boycott the Oscars
3. You have traveled more than 100 miles to see a movie
4. You can appreciate a film just based on the cinematography alone.
5. You are careful to classify motion pictures as either films (pieces of art) or movies (purely entertainment).
6. You have never, and will never, see a movie with Martin Lawrence in it.
7. You have rented all the films in a director’s repertoire and watched them in chronological order.
8. You’ve seen Pi and weren’t completely disappointed
9. You’ve bought a T-shirt or other memorabilia prior to a film’s release.
10. You were in a betting pool on the opening weekend gross for Snakes on a Plane

Now onto confession time. Hi friends! My name is Alisha and I am a movie snob. It gets to the point where I groom my friends to know off the top of their head what percent every movie is at RT. And if it isn't "fresh" they tell their friends "Alisha says I can't see it." It's kind of bad, but kind of awesome to have that much power.

I'm also a movie geek, which sometimes goes hand in hand with being a snob, if you are willing to not go see the new James Bond film if it isn't fresh. Like I never saw past the first Pirates film because 1) the first is brilliant and 2) the last two got god awful reviews. I saw bits and pieces by accident of the second, but I fell asleep. But I'm probably one of the only people out there who didn't watch the entire trilogy.

I'm not that bad, but my dvds have to be widescreen with few exceptions. If the only offer of the widescreen is the unrated cut, I will probably get the fullscreen, I'm not particularly fond of unrated versions. They don't really add anything to the movie and sometimes they take away. I also want lots of special features included like, trailer, extra scenes, bloopers, and the making of. And the dvd has to have English subtitles, I don't have the best hearing in the world and I miss things.

But the movie itself, I really only care to watch a movie is it actually gives a care about itself. A lot of movies these days are garbage with lots of money wasted on them and then no wants to see them or buy the products. So it's saying look at this six million we wasted on a movie that will bring about two million back.

Whatever happen to real storytelling, making a quality product over quantity? You know some of the worst movies made from good stories or events are because Hollywood try to change it too much. And then they wonder why the movies flop. It's because your not respecting your audience and basically taking fast food and pretending it's expensive cuisine. Don't make a movie because you can, make one because you want to.

Yes, I am a complete movie snob. I consider the Oscar period the best time for movies and actively avoid the summer blockbuster period. I haven't watched a blockbuster in years and don't intend to. Actually, I look down on summer blockbusters as a whole. I check IMDb for user ratings as well as user and external reviews and have watched shows before just because they are on IMDb's top 250 list. And the most embarrassing thing... for the most part I abhor movie remakes of books, remakes of classics etc. I adore classics and won't even bother to watch some of the remakes if I know it's going to be bad (eg Gus van Sant's Psycho).

I realise I'm coming off as a complete slave to critical attention and a huge snob, so I'll try to explain. See, I would watch a summer blockbuster if the story was good or if I was interested in it somehow, but in the past few years I can honestly say I haven't been interested in any of the summer offerings. I don't go for superhero movies or special effects - I want good directing, acting, script, yes - even cinematography, which you just don't find in summer stuff. I'm not all bad - I like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, for instance - but for the most part I tend to love indie or Oscar-material and shun blockbusters.

I'm definitely not I'll watch anything. Even if a movie isn't very good, it doesn't mean that I don't enjoy watching it.

What about the summer blockbusters/superhero movies that garner great reviews? I believe Iron Man (an 8.2 or so of 10 on IMDb) and The Dark Knight (9.2 on IMDb) got a mid-90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I guess i´m a bit of a snob. I avoid the big Hollywood comedies/action-movies as much as i can. If there are five new movies in my local videostore and four of them are big Hollywood blockbusters and one is a French independent drama i always pick the French drama. I strongly dislike all the watered down "disney horror" that comes out of Hollywood. Any horror director that cut scenes just to get a PG-13 or R rating should just do something else and not waste the real horror fans time.

I do watch films that I like, whether it's Hollywood, "foreign," independent. if it interests me, I'll give it a go. I tend to avoid those movie parodies like Date Movie and Meet the Spartans type of films though. I guess the only time I'll watch it if it's out on cable and I'm not doing anything.

I also do not like watching films which borderlines porn but people call "artsy," no matter how critically acclaimed the film is. That's why it's very important that I research about what I'll watch first.

Yeah I know! So with that (good ratings vs summer blockbusters) leaving me in a bit of a quandary I always fall back on "am I personally interested in it? (it being the story or whatever). And in the case of Iron Man or The Dark Knight I just wasn't interested so I haven't seen either. In the end - despite all my snob tendencies - that's what it boils down to really. Whether I'm interested in it or not on a personal level. See, that doesn't make me sound so horrible now

This is funny, i'm the opposite on the widescreen/fullscreen buying. I will always go to Fullscreen first, and sometimes won't even buy a movie, if I have to get widescreen.

What full screen madness is that? Most special editions come only in WS, you're missing out!

Thanks for the list Alisha! I'm not a movie snob but #1, #4 and #5 apply to me. As for #8, I couldn't even finish Pi. I told myself I'd finish it later, but I never did.

It sorta depends on the movie, if there are some nice special editions i'll get them, but the black bars annoy me. I want to use all of my screen and many times i'm left with only using 60% of my screen.

I'm sorta #1 from the list and I never pay attentionto any award shows, so maybe #2 applies? lmao

I really wouldn't class myself as one, no. Maybe a movie geek//boff

I watch so many movies, Big blockbusters, indie, foreign, kids movies. I always give a movie a go. My friends and I all have very different movie taste's but i will watch whatever they throw at me as i love movie making - Doesn't mean i will like the movie though My buddies call me a movie snob due to having a passion for foregin films, but to me that is simply loving movies of all cultures not being a snob.

As for the list i have to say that #1, #3,#4, #7, and #9 have all applied to me at one point but again i wouldn't say it's snobbish i would say it was more geeky

Try watching the fullscreen version of Blue Velvet and you will change your mind immediately about prefering fullscreen. David Lynch´s movies are confusing enough but when you also have to watch a movie where you can hear people talking but there´s noone on the screen because the people are off on the right or left most of the time it becomes completely unwatchable.
